The NGC Census: a modest proposal.
Fenntucky Mike replied to Henri Charriere's topic in US, World, and Ancient Coins
40% is not an outrageous number, especially if survivors are well documented, but for most coin series I would think the margin to be less. Opposite could be true as well for series with low survival rates or mintages, who knows you could have a coin with a mintage of 1 and it was labeled wrong, or cracked out multiple times. -

It's worse than ever and they are a double hit to a census, the wrong piece is recorded and the correct piece is not. -
Admission Fees At Coin Shows
Fenntucky Mike replied to Fenntucky Mike's topic in US, World, and Ancient Coins
Some preshow research was assumed by me and should be done by anyone attending any event. If I felt there would be few pieces I'd be interested in, there were no scheduled numismatic meetings, talks, lectures, etc., or that the cost of traveling and lodging was beyond my means at the time I wouldn't go. The admission fee being 20% of what you spend in getting to a show sounds like a lot but $10 to get into an event that you want to attend doesn't. I'm also looking at this from an individual point of view, if I had to pay for a spouse and six kids that's a whole different story. They're staying home! Agreed. -
I've read multiple people complain about the $10 entry fee at IMEX and I can't help but wonder what's the big deal. A mere $10 seems like a reasonable cover charge for admission to an event that you want to attend, I wouldn't think twice about it, and I've paid more to get into lesser events. Is an admission fee a deal-breaker in regards to attending a show to anyone here? Is $10 too much?

The NGC Census: a modest proposal.
Fenntucky Mike replied to Henri Charriere's topic in US, World, and Ancient Coins
All TPG census are what they are, a basic resource that's probably around 80% accurate. Crack-outs, Crossovers, Mechanical errors, etc...... They'll never stop and a census will never be what it could or should be. -
The notes look to be in pretty good condition, worth around $4-$6 each if in uncirculated, maybe a little more. Pick # 94c The commemorative set with the coin and banknote look like they are going for $15-$20 on ebay. EDIT: It could but the coin would still show signs of a clasp having once been attached. Having the clasp removed wouldn't increase the value imo.

Tokens are going strong right now, collectors looking to buy are feeling the pinch as prices soar and good material hits the market. -
Has Gradeflation Peaked ?
Fenntucky Mike replied to GoldFinger1969's topic in US, World, and Ancient Coins
Will CACG fan the flames of gradeflation? Will gradeflation or CACG's supposedly stricter standards eventually suppress CACG submissions? Too many downgrades or rejects coming back in attempts to crossover, etc.. "Has gradflation peaked?" Since I don't collect U.S. coins I really couldn't say, but I'm seeing more and more World coins in PCGS plastic and there are a lot of high grade pieces. It could be the start of gradeflation for World coins, I'll have to pay more attention to get a better idea though. -

Daniel Carr Madison County Coin Club Medal
Fenntucky Mike replied to hkfears's topic in US, World, and Ancient Coins
Those look nice, way better than most coin club medals/tokens. Plenty of coin club medal/token collectors out there, lots of ANA medal/token collectors as well. -

Just curious on how you are doing with your collecting goals so far, there's plenty of time to wait for the right piece to come along. Lots of OT might help beef up the ol' kitty for coins and tokens. -
Ah, that explains a lot.

One of my favorite designs and for some reason I frequently see these, any date, with that light purple toning, which I like. I'm still a blast white fan at heart though.

So... There's a 2 Lire coin, you say?
Fenntucky Mike commented on Revenant's journal entry in When I’m Wiser and I’m Older
The thrill of discovery and the agony of the realization that it was right in front of you the whole time. It's great that you found a solo already graded, you really couldn't hope for anything better. Typically I miss out when I wanted something but didn't know it yet. -

Nice HH! That brick will look cool in a nice display with the token and maybe a couple pics. Have you had luck finding any additional tokens or any wins at auction? -

Very nice. I've a few WCE pieces, it's a collecting area I've thought about getting into more seriously but currently only dabble. I look forward to seeing more of your collection. -

2025 American Liberty gold coin
Fenntucky Mike replied to Henri Charriere's topic in US, World, and Ancient Coins
I thought that the U.S. Mint had already been using lasered dies and/or hubs? That they chose to make a 1oz silver medal instead of $1 denominated coin seems odd but I'm sure everything will sell out, whether or not the mintage will be sufficient to meet demand will be the biggest question. I'm sure they'll keep releasing old designs in upcoming years, this is probably going to be like the Royal Mint's Great Engravers series. Can a SG $100 gold coin be far behind? -
It looks like similar pieces have sold in the €100+ range, but I'm not 100% sure I'm comparing apples to apples as there seem to be several varieties. The coin in the OP seems to be in exceptional condition, I don't think the cleaning detracts from it that much, if at all. Your best bet at determining value is to find coins of this type sold at auction, or take it to an expert or auction house that deals in these.

I like 1/10, I'm talking NCLT in this instance. I'm paying more of a premium for common pieces, ones with collector or numismatic premiums cost what they cost, but that price level allows me to collect what I like and collect by date and variety. I would much rather have a complete set of fractional gold than a type set or collection of one or two pieces, I'd by a gold bar or nugget before I did that, even if it means I'm not maximizing my $'s. I'm not arguing against 1oz or circulated gold coins, just giving a different point of view. I like what I like. 👍
