Hi NGC Forum, Happened to get a couple of Silver Washington Quarters in my change the other day. 1936 & 1940 respectively. I know not exactly the best of condition. Photos below. My question(s) come down to this: Are they worth keeping? Possible Sell? (Not saying anyone needs / wants them) Or just use them?

Coming up on the auction block at the Long Beach Show, September 30, 2022, is the above item, No. 161, 27.88 ozs. (Type 3 hallmark) as offered by auction. or auctions.vegascoindealer.com The current bid (as of post time) is $27,500, with estimates given ranging from $26K-$44K. I do not collect these. In point of fact, I was unaware the U.S. Mint, or any of its branches "minted" these. I assume a slab might not be entirely out of the question. My only question is how does one "grade" these? Obviously, a pristine bar would be collector worthy, but who or what do bar collectors consult for guidance. Just curious. [Sorry I cannot provide a link; I have only been a collector for 50 years.]

Greetings, Brand New here. I purchased a copy of 1804 US Silver Dollar. I received it yesterday and I'm a bit confused as to its origins and composition. Here is the ad for coin: "Beautiful Proof-Like Replica of the famous RARE 1804 US Silver Dollar, with the word COPY on the eagles' breast. In sealed hard plastic capsule. Reeded edge, with the notation .999 Fine Silver. and I think Maybe a serial number I can't make out. Gorgeous luster in Real Life, 1.3 ounces (38 grams) including the capsule. 15 known copies of the original." Also strange is it has a reeded edge on half of it, then its smooth with the text: " .999 Fine Silver CA 01368" I don't know if I need to return it or What. I did a google search and could only find one match for a coin that looks like this. 1804 Class I Silver Dollar Replica Archival Edition look here Any thoughts? Worth keeping? Thanks, Mike

Is there a way to message Competitive Registry Set Members? There used to be a way but I know longer see how. I think that a few of the folks there in the R2 South Africa set may be interested in this key coin: 2011 WWF 50th Table Mountain Privy PF69 (top Pop - none higher). If anyone knows some of the folks that participate in the R2 silver proof set please let them know of this post. I also have many other South Africa R1 and R2 coins for sale - many at my break-even cost. I also actively import coins from South Africa monthly, including new releases from the South African Mint. This includes the Silver Krugerrands, The Big Five series, The silver R2 series, and the R1 series (Protea and Mandela Life of a Legend). I'm also looking to buy the only coin that I am missing in my R2 set: the Kogelsberg Biosphere Marine coin. Thanks for looking.... Rodney aka RodneyTheAmerican

needhelp I Have No Idea What I'm Doing
KerstynLee posted a topic in Newbie Coin Collecting Questions
Well hello, mass of people who have a ridiculous amount of knowledge on a subject I am completely clueless about! Hopefully someone can help, I'm genuinely just curious. Don't worry, I'll make this long and boring, just for you! 😉 My mother just passed away. I'm planning a celebration of life service for her and I want the "theme" to be "Pennies from Heaven"... Tonight when I actually started going through my various change receptacles, I noticed a silver penny. I didn't think much of it but kept it to the side. There is no mint mark (I'm sorry, like I said, I'm clueless here so I hope that's what I was trying to say 😅) and it's from the year 1959. What has my interest so piqued now is the wildly different things I've read online about this particular penny. Some say it's rare, some say it's trash basically. So. If anyone would be so kind to assist, I'd be more than happy to provide more pictures (ignore my hideous nails and cuticles, the stress of losing my mom unexpectedly has made me do strange things) or whatever else I can. I just would like to know more about it. If it is in fact something special, then I would obviously like to incorporate it into the service for my mother. Thank you all so much in advance! 😘 -

So to start off this nickel currently weighs in at 4.7 grams. That being said, then considering the composition of 40-50% silver (I believe) of the single known small S 1942 Nickel. It’s not unlikely this coin could’ve seen unusually heavy wear. Also the “S” I’m seeing looks slightly rotated clockwise To the right of Monticello. Is clear enough to see with naked eye or loop. But is near impossible to sight close up. Making me think I’m SEEING PATTERNS*** . Thank you

Hey everyone I was hoping someone could help me Identify what I am assuming is an Ottoman Empire Coin. I believe the faded symbol within the dotted circle is a Tughra, but I'm not sure. The coins are silver and around an inch in diameter they are paper thin. You can tell which coins are which based on the crack in one of them.

Hello all and thank you all for taking a look! I have this V nickle that is in amazing condition. I recent sales y got a coin microscope to check it out and see some issues with the coin. I'm still pretty new to collecting and haven't been able to figure out doubling as of yet. Some things I see that look doubled, people say arent, and some things that dont look doubled people say are..... is this a ddo? Around the lettering as well as almost all the way around the rim and dentils looks like it's been doubled. Any help before I send this in to grading would be great!D and T and the edges of the leaves below the D.

In studying the composition and melt values of U.S. silver coins from the 1873-1964 time frame, I noticed that there's a discrepancy between the amount of silver in Morgan and Peace dollars and that in the lower denomination coins. If you assume the silver in a dime, quarter, or half dollar was intended to be equal to the exact face value of the coin, it suggests a silver bullion price of about $1.382 per troy oz. However, if you assume the same for the silver dollars, it is consistent with a silver price of only $1.293 per troy oz. Interestingly, the latter price is exactly the silver price I calculate from 1792 legislation setting the weight of all silver denominations in grains "pure" and "standard". So my question is, which of the following is the explanation? (1) Was the amount of silver in the lower denomination coins reduced compared to the 1792 standard to account for a rise in the price of silver and gold, while the dollar for some reason retained the original weight? This would mean the dollar was worth more than a dollar, while the lower denominations were worth exactly their face values. The higher silver price is consistent with a 15:1 ratio of gold to silver with a gold price of $20.67 per oz, as set in 1837. (2) Was the amount of silver in the dollar exactly equal to a dollar, while the smaller denominations were worth less than face value? The lower silver price would be consistent with a 15:1 ratio of gold to silver with a gold price of $19.39 per oz, the price set in 1792. Option (1) seems more likely, unless the 15:1 ratio was changed at some point prior to 1934. But if so, why would Congress allow the minting of hundreds of millions of dollar coins over almost 90 years that were worth $1.07 each?

I obtained a 10 lb original lead sealed bag of coins from the Binion Horde. I wondered if anyone had a good procedural recommendation other than my initial thought of immediately opening the bag and releasing the mystery. While that sounds fun I know it might be rather foolish to do that. I know because I did it with Collector F1 cars, guns and crazy stuff back in the CEO days when I had it rolling hard. Now I am more prudent ( cars all gone and no more shooting 1 of 100 guns for fum:() It IS fun but t IS stupid too. Any sage advice - I thank you kindly in advance for the insight. I HAVE to open them, that's just me. But how do I do that right? Would I just have them authenticated and graded? I've gotten great help here as I learn and I'm sincerely hoping for more.

Hi, I am new to coin collecting and wanted to find out what and how i should care for this coin. I was told not to open the box from the mint. Why? can i trust that my coin will be safe when submitting for grading? What type of grading service should i get? What can i do to maximize the value of the coin? if anyone could help that would be great. thanks for your time.

Hello everybody, I finally got back to looking at some of my collection today and found this little coin. At first I thought it to be a tree of some sorts and then after doing some research realized it was an anchor and I therefor think it's Greek and of Apollonia Pontika. I just couldn't seem to find one which the anchor has dots or eyes underneath it as mine does. I am also considering it could be a fake, however seems unlikely. I also hope you can discern how small it is based on the staples in the pictures, as I am unable to weigh the coin. I appreciate any information I can get, Thanks so much -Jake.

I have 2 Jefferson Nickels from 1943. both Philadelphia mint marks over Monticello on the Reverse. One weighs 5.2 Grams or 80 grains; the other weighs 4.8 Grams or 76 grains. The drop test from a few inches onto my desk reveal two entirely different sounds. The Coin at 4.8 grams has the typical silver sound, and has much wear. The 5.2 gram nickel has a different sound. It does not sound like a 1940 Nickel, that is 49 Grams or 76 grains. I am entirely confused. Did they make any nickels in 1943 out of another metal than Silver?

Recently acquired these nickels, the color is just completely unbeatable and insane. Any thoughts the origin or relative color to coins from the Appalachian horde? Pinks and greens seem to be a common factor in many of those points, I want to reach out to the community to get some input.
