    Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.
It's not so much for me.....my understanding was that LEGITIMATE bar codes could be used with alternative, fake coins in LEGITIMATE PCGS/NGC holders.
Net-Net, you can't use a legitimate, real bar code for my Saint-Gaudens coin to pass off your copy which isn't real but might be 1 ounce of real gold with or without a "grade" in the front that matches mine holder.

I sometimes have to wait until a coin clears from the previous owner before I can add a new coin to my registry set. So the system works if the coin is in a registry. However if it passes from hand to hand without being submitted a fake coin could be around for a while before it is discovered.

You named two of the three reasons for blacking out the barcode (there may be more)
    1) Fraudulent Registry listings
    2) To combat counterfeiting
    3) the owner does not want a prospective buyer to know how much he paid for it - if that information is available from auctions and the like.

It might help deter counterfeit slabs if the TPG's listed which coins are registered when looking up cert #s, might help them increase registry participation too. Or the coins are automatically transferred to the individuals registry after grading/ shipping, if the submitter sells the coin the buyer must request a transfer. It might be a little annoying for the submitter but they can always ignore the email.

Yeah, that too. Although nobody would know if we read or not. If those he personally explained stuff too or those who knew him personally would share little tidbits of the knowledge he passed to them, like @JT2 did above, then his name and the knowledge he dealt out to others would spread by people reading what they write. At this point though, I suppose it is a moot point because we are the only ones to have said anything at all. But I do feel better having recognized him myself regardless of what other chose to do or not to do. He helped me out and I just wanted to share that.

Well, of course I must step in here being the phenom I am at taking great shots. Regular device camera app. Even with the worst you CAN take great shots. Set the Coun down and pull back the phone until it is focus. Once in focus pinch/pull your screen until the Coin fills it. Snap a picture. (I'm sure there's a song lyric in that last). Stay in camera mode and click the pic to edit it. Always edit from camera mode and not from gallery or Photos. There are more options there. If you want to close in on a particular area, like for a DD, a 10x Macro clip-on is plenty. Do my above procedure from the start with the macro clipped on. You can always crop your shots in camera mode to bring things even closer without distortion. The key it to start by pulling the lens away from the Coin until it's in focus. NOT to try to focus on the Coin where it lays. See?

As far as lighting goes, consider making a photo box. An old box, some tissues, 2 equal lights and some tape is all you need to make one. Use a good box and it'll last forever too.

Isn't that how the counterfeits counterfeit? So should a person decide to run the slab number it will come up genuine? I'm sure I saw that before somewhere. I remember entering the number and all and the Coin I entered it for looked nothing like the one produce via PCGS. Wasn't my Coin and I can't recall why I bothered . Had actually forgotten about it til now.

Just to expand on this, you can enter and your non-certified coins into your inventory using the old NGC registry system, this can be found at www.collectors-society.com.   You can use the same username and password that you used to create this post.   However, all this does is create a digital file of the coins, you are not allowed to use those raw coins in any competitive registry set.   And while you can enter those raw coins into a custom set, nobody can see the coins in that custom set.   Even while logged on you will not be able to see the raw coins you have entered into that custom set unless you are in the edit set mode.
If you decide you want to create your inventory and populate it with raw coins I will be happy to provide you with the steps to do so.

Likely plated in a science experiment of some type. It can’t be aluminum. Too heavy. Forget that explanation.

A 1976 Lincoln cent is supposed to be composed of 95% copper and 5% zinc (the alloy known as brass), with a statutory weight of 3.11 grams, which is exactly what you state yours weighs.  Based on your photo its appearance is brown with traces of remaining mint "red", which is an expected appearance for a lightly circulated cent of this era.  A coin containing aluminum would have a lower weight.  Your coin is simply a normal 1976 Lincoln cent, one of 4,674,292,426 reported to have been minted.

It would not be a cud, a cud involves a break of the die along the rim. It is called a Die Chip, which are fairly common. Don’t forget, once the die is chipped, every coin minted after that would have that mark on it so there could be tens of thousands out there the same. Also chips are not considered an error, it is part of the minting process. Some people call it a Die Event.

So I saw this on FaceBook this morning. Very sad. Mr. Lange answered one of my questions here and schooled me on Ejection Striations. He seemed to be a very member in these Forums and will surely be sorely missed. My thoughts go out to all his family and friends. This is a great loss to the Numismatic world as a whole. Rest In Peace Sir.

So, strike doubling on the first strike, which was flattened by the second strike, which also had strike doubling, causing tripling of the design. Interesting, if not very valuable.

Got the results back. Flate doubling, cool to know proofs are double struck. Well I know a little bit about proofs and how there minted. I want to thank everyone for taking time to look at this thread. One day I'll find something very cool, but got to be patient and keep hunting.

Hi Karen, glad to hear you're back. Yeah kind of interesting,  I don't know anything about proofs but something not right going on. I sent this coin in yesterday to have it looked at. I just know if they have it in hand they can tell me more about it. Soon as I get the results back I'll post it on here.
