The only British coin by Droz I have is a pattern sixpence from 1790.
Many of the top engravers seem to have moved around Europe quite freely despite the wars going on!

Very interesting, particularly as the recoinage of 1816 happened at the end of the Napoleonic period. This period in France appears to lack the small denominations with only a single issue (1808BB) of the 5 centimes being in copper so I assumed there was plenty of the earlier small denomination coinage still available - I could easily be wrong as there doesn't seem to be much of that about either and certainly not in high grade.
There are many other things I would like to collect however I have enough trouble just collecting coins - does auction catalogues count??!

Beautiful coins and you have a very impressive collection - even more so given the quality of the coins. I have had a long standing interest in Irish coins & history although as I started as a sixpence collector this tends to be silver (free state) rather than copper/bronze - the one exception is this token from 1846 as this appears to have been issued by my family which is a bit odd as most of the family is from around Cork!
I have spent the last year or so trying not to buy certain banknotes issued in Northern Ireland.

Congratulations on your Best in Category Awards, particularly as they are US coinage - maybe you should consider a move to the dark side that is world coins as there is no ANA or anything like that to worry about

I recommend a trip to Italy as I have visited Rome and northern Italy for work reasons many times (do not try and drive in Rome though) although holidays tend to be in the south around Naples - we usually stay in the hills surrounding Sorrento and it has absolutely nothing to do with my interest in the coins of Napoleonic Italy or the relationship of the area to the French and Spanish, they still seem very fond of these periods of their history. You will need to resist the urge to start collecting ancients and this becomes much more difficult following trips to Pompei, the islands etc - the kids like running up and down Vesuvius although several times in one day is more than enough.

I spent the weekend looking through things but no joy - that may be because I got distracted by some old auction catalogues and spent time going through those instead

I expect we all do this to some extent, even if we don't realise it, and documenting it is surprisingly difficult so congratulations on your article in the Clarion (which I had to look up ).
We are a bit short of numismatic publications here in the UK which is more or less now limited to 'Coin News' which does a great job of trying to cover everything from ancients to new paper money releases.

Fantastic results - how many coins do you have to go through before you find the ones you submit?
I ask as it has been years since I got to see raw coins in the flesh before purchasing and the nearest place is in another country!

Great addition to your set - congratulations!
A few years ago I decided that I just had to pay up for some coins and because I planned to hold for a long time the few extra £/$s now would more than work out in the end and even seem a bargain in the future. This became more obvious as coins that I couldn't bring myself to pay for years ago are now priced way beyond my reach!
    Once again many congratulations

ColonialCoinsUK got a reaction from deposito in So, do we actually want the value of these things to rise?
I have given this much thought over the years, collecting coins has always been a hobby - the history and the academic numismatic challenge the main driving forces. As the collection, and hence its value, grew I have had to consider some of the coins as 'investments' hence the move to graded coins was important for me as the difference in 'value' between similar grades grew. With graded coins when the kids inherit the collection they are less at the mercy of dealers/auction houses where grades of EF, AU and UNC may all be given for the same coin and hence very different 'prices/estimates' as a result. With graded coins my kids can then look up prices online to get a good idea of the value and if a coin is sold at auction in an MS63 slab then the market will determine the value which is probably fairer.
Overall I would hope the collection at least maintains its value and my records suggest that holding for at least 20 years will hopefully see an increase - and hopefully I would have learnt something along the way.

Great idea! He will remember that forever.
I bought my kids some kilo bulk lots of world coins at auction and a world map to go on the wall. They spent many many hours trying to match coins to the countries, and sticking them on the map, it was a great way for them to learn where each country was although places like 'Sarawak' caused some confusion as they no longer exist.  Unlike your son it was the ones with animals on or funny shapes that they were most interested in and it also meant that they got some funny looks on holidays when they wanted to know why it wasn't Pesetas in Spain, Lira in Italy and Marks in Germany - however this did then prompt them to start looking for the different countries on the euros. They still go through their change trying to put date sets together and looking for the special 50 pence pieces we have here in the UK so I guess something sank in over the years!

Thankyou both for the detailed history of Mansfeld, it is this historical context that I find fascinating as coins, with their changing design and production not only highlight the critical issues of the day but are sometimes the only tangible thing left to show that a person or place ever existed.
