Your awareness of this coin did you well. I was thrilled when I obtained mine. Also thank you for telling me the selling price when I contacted you. I don't think too many people would have done that. If I may ask - how did you determine the rarity of this coin? Was it from Southall's or some other book? Also - are you in or have you visited the Isle of Man? Just curious.

Based upon your post - I decided to look up the die marriage on mine. The book is very easy to use, very good illustrations and logically laid out. It is moving up on my read list.

I have not found the time to start reading my Copy yet. Hopefully one of these days. Too many books to read - so little time. I bought the deluxe edition - looks great in my library.

He said he didn't mind holes. Maybe he just didn't come across a 1907 low relief that he really liked. What a set, however. Would love to see them in person.

I have the half penny as well, but not as nice as yours. It seems as if they tried to keep good records when they started publishing the encyclopedias, but even those were lacking. Much better than nothing - sure wished they kept on with it and improved it a little along the way.

I wonder if they are confused or there really are 1978 BUs out there.

I quickly skimmed through the first edition of Pobjoy's encyclopedia to their third edition, I don't believe I'll be gaining any new insight into those coins or processes. A waste of money, but it is a hard cover compared to the paperback second and third editions. Oh well....

Stick around - there are plenty of good discussions. Some do take on a scarcastic tone at times, but it's mostly in fun.

The encyclopedia has a couple of gems in it. It's incomplete as usual, but adds some that is not in Southall's book. The Scotish book (Spinks) on coins that includes the islands - I don't believe covers the sovereigns. If it does and you have it please advise. The more information that you can piece together - the better. the 1984 is interesting. I don't like the scratch above QE's forehead, but it might be worth an email. What is the web-site?

No gold or platinum listed. Only a piedfort sterling silver. I'm working out of Southhalls second edition. I think our friend has a third edition. I doubt if there is additional information on this one, however. Virenium Definition: A patented silver-coloured base metal alloy in the Nickel Silver family, often used for commemorative coins and medals. Composed largely of copper, with nickel, zinc and other constituents. Intended to have the look and stability of precious metal. Virenium is a German Silver type of alloy containing nickel as well as copper and zinc with a magnetic element as a built in security device. It was first used by the Isle of Man. It has the composition 81% Cu, 10% Zn and 9% Ni.
