  1. The one I have is from Lighthouse so that may be where you have seen it, it is the three tray (the bottom tray is the bottom of the case and does not remove) display box.   I really like it as it holds both sets with a couple of slots for extras, in case lol.  No issues with the lid opening or closing and it stays open with no problems, here is a shot of it with the top two trays pulled out (note you can see some of my imposter coins :D).  If I was only doing one set or a sub set I probably would have gone with one of the glass top designs.

  2. There are some really nice display cases out in the market, I really enjoy woodworking also and have thought about building one or two myself once I'm retired and have the free time (free time who am I kidding:roflmao:).   I bought a case to hold my #1 1930 and 1940 year sets together, I use some lower grade duplicate coins for the copper coins in here as the ones in the set are stored in Intercept shield holders in the SDB for protection.   Every now that then I get them out and put the full sets together for display at special occasions or just because I want to.

And, of course, we both use old gold coins for avatar images. lol

Lol true and its even more funny because I'm mostly a copper collector.   It sounds like many of you are taking a similar approach as I am, waiting but moving if the right piece happens to come along.   Overall I think that is a good strategy for the time being, I would love to see spot drop back to $1200 again but am not really expecting that.  If the spot price does get down to the $1500 range and hangs out for a while to let the coin prices settle I may look to find those two more expensive coins.  While not a priority set I should have been smart and finished this set back when I built my Indian head quarter eagle set, I paid around $150 each (minus the 11-D) for nice AU/BU coins.  That is also when I bought the saint and a couple of the other coins in this type set, should have finished it then while prices were much lower.

  4. Very nice and congrats on "filling the box".  I have just a handful of graded gold but many that are raw, its a very fulfilling feeling to hold a large gold coin like a double eagle and wonder if it was ever used to buy goods and services or has it lived a life of luxury in a bank vault.  Like you my first gold coin was a 1/10oz eagle, just NLCT but still a thrill and I still have that coin sitting in its original mint box.  I very much enjoyed putting together an AU set of Indian head quarter eagles luckily I was able to do that when they only cost $150 each for the commons.   Enjoy building the second box, gold is very addicting.

Six is a pretty solid crop! Do you get the certificates in the mail or do you pdf them? My main motivation in getting the printed ones is the 10G set and having all of them from 2016 (Ben's birth year) to however long I can hold onto the streak.

Thank you and a big hand to you for your registry wins including the journal award two years running, very nice accomplishment.   I've been slowly increasing the number of wins for best in category, all together I have 31 best in category awards with the first two awarded in 2012 so it has been a nice run.  Honestly I have not worried about the certificates much in the past, in fact I'm not even sure where I put the ones that NGC used to mail out automatically.   I think I will have the one for my 1940 year set mailed this year, that is my moms birth year set so I was thinking I would frame it and give it to her.

Congratulations on your Best in Category Awards, particularly as they are US coinage - maybe you should consider a move to the dark side that is world coins as there is no ANA or anything like that to worry about :ph34r:xD

Thank you very much, and like Revenant a big congrats for your journal win.   There are some really beautiful world coins out there, I think that one day I will do some research and find a series with a design that I really like and build some sort of world set.   World coinage seems rather daunting looking through the window per se, so I'll have to dig in and review the sets in the registry and then begin the learning process before I start to buy.

It will be a great opportunity to help you build any set you are working on Coinbuf.

Cheers to everyone now that 2020 is over and I sure hope that 2021 turns out to be a great year and things get back to normal by the end of the year.

    Happy  Coin Collecting,

is the "https://coins.www.collectors-society.com/WCM" considered  the "old" website?
That's all I use.  My sets are only custom sets, most of my coins are not eligible for any registry or points.

I hope they don't drop that, since I sort of use it to keep track of my stuff $-wise etc.

Yes that is the old system, NGC has said that they plan to migrate the custom sets over once the new, new registry is started.  I too hope that the in progress new system has the functions of the old system, I use excel to track my collection but the NGC system is my backup.  However because I don't know for sure I have been putting all my information into/on the PCGS registry in an abundance of caution just in case.

  7. I am quite sure that @Revenant is correct and the old registry system interface is way on the back burner.  I just hope that when the new NGC/ANA system is introduced it can address all the issues the new registry has.  Which is not to say that the new system is not better in some ways because it is, just that I hope they are able to take the good from the old and new and create an even better registry experience.

  8. No doubt a very difficult day for you and your family yesterday, prayers and best wishes for you all.  Hopefully your new ventures are working well and keeping your mind occupied, coins will always be here and you may find your way back to them in the future.  I hope that 2021 will be a happier and more pleasant time for you and for us all.

  9. Sweet sounds like a nice newp for your set, yes family first although this year will be much less family.  My oldest daughter is pregnant and is staying away from everyone due to the C19 and youngest is working in another state.  So this will be a very small turkey day gathering, you and your family have a happy thanksgiving!!

  10. @Revenant I have found that it depends on if your on the new or old registry, I recently asked Ali a question about a problem I was seeing with inventory on the old system and she informed me that they are aware of it but as they are not really spending time maintaining the old system that some issues were popping up.  I have noticed that if I update photos and descriptions on the old system that most of the time those will populate the new system.  However if I make those changes on the new system they do not seem to be reflected in the old system, so far I have been making most of my changes to the new system as I expect that is what the registry team will be looking at when they do their review.  But I will also go in and update the old system too just in case.  If you view that set on the new registry all the photos are there and it also includes my custom set photo that you see at the top of the set.

I plan to spend some time this weekend trying to finish up all the descriptions but there is a ton of info I still need to add and I may run out of time unfortunately.

Ever think about resubmitting this one, that is a great looking dime. ^^

Never mind. I just read your notes on it. Good luck.

Honestly I think about it all the time, but deep at heart I'm a coin collector and the coin itself is what is important more so than the grade.  And I just really like the look of those old holders like the rattler so I really don't think I'll ever send it in.

Somehow I knew what this was about when I saw that title (not the specific sets but what you were eligible for). ;)

You're clearly doing this wrong though. You're supposed to put all of your hopes and dreams into one set / basket and set yourself up for disappointment. lol

The discussion about reconfiguring your penny set is interesting given the conversation we've been having in the Registry forum.

Lol, However this way I have set myself up for a triple dose of disappointment:devil::D.  I have been looking for the past few months for the three coins I need in NGC plastic but just did not find the right coins at a price I was ok spending.  I could have filled the slots with any ho-hum example just to have the slot filled with an NGC example but I just will not do that anymore.  So while not absolutely necessary I did the math and figured that removing the three coins will be the best way to reach the end goal, it stings a bit though as I really hate to have the set appear incomplete.

Anyhow thank you all, while winning awards is not the reason I participate in the registry I thought to myself that if I am going to participate it would be nice to at least be able to have a chance for one of the major awards.

I thought I read somewhere that only sets comprised of 75% NGC coins are eligible for awards? If true, you may keep winning. I don't have to worry too much about it myself as I think the sets I collect have a few billionaires around. Plus, a few of the coins in them are so hard to find reasonable in any holder, making some of these sets a pretty daunting task at today's PM prices. Much less all certain kind is almost impossibly hard without having to send them in for re-branding and hope they sill make the grade.

I just don't worry about it as apparently a few dealers have listed about 100 sets of other people they know in my categories as to make the registry just a fun toy for me. I will never win an award if the 75% NGC rule is in fact true but, I enjoy it just the same.

Also the world coins only allow NGC so I don;t even bother listing stuff there. Just too hard to compose a decent set in a single type holder for what I like to collect. I am grateful that they did start allowing that other brand in the US sets personally so I could at least play with it. Kinda gives you some incentive and keeps the collecting juices flowing that way. Overall good for the graded coin industry as a whole I think, JMHO.

Hope you keep winning your set.

The 75% rule is only for the major award winners, those winners receive a cash or equivalent award.  The best in category awards are not part of the major awards and are not subject to the 75% rule.  From the registry rules for major awards:

"The winner in each of the following categories receives a plaque, a $500 NGC grading credit and an icon of recognition on their NGC Registry profile. At least 75% of the coins registered to a set must be NGC-certified to be eligible for one of the major awards."

So this new set will win the best in category but cannot be considered for a major award as constructed.

NGC's decision to have the guarantee expire after 10 years puts copper collector's in an awkward spot though - if these coins in my set in the old fatties from 1993 were copper then they wouldn't have been eligible for the grade guarantee for the last 17 years - nearly 2/3rds the time they've been in the holder.

Does not matter, if the coin has not changed in ten years then chances are extremely high that the coin will never change unless it is subjected to some very poor storage conditions.  In fact both the top TPG's really don't have any guarantee when it comes to copper, those provisions were gutted years ago.

  14. Having different slabs and slab types just doesn't bother me in the least, I value old slabs because I know the coins are stable and have not been doctored.  In fact when I see coins in brand new slabs the first thought is has this coin been recently worked over and how much do I have to worried about the coin turning in the holder, especially for copper and gold.  I know you have not been improving them but its a definite concern for copper collectors like myself
