That's part of the reason I put these posts out there. They may appeal to someone (young or old) and they are different. If it gets anyone interested in coins - it's a good thing. And they do attract conversation.

As as far as the knight coin goes - that is the first king of the Isle of Man - good legend - and one that I own. I'm part Manx so it has some meaning along with being a neat looking coin (piece of art).

I agree.  I actually really like the knight coin - it probably should be classified as a medal, but it's still cool, and big! :headbang:

Signatures no longer show up under members who post. We use to have links to our registry pages and post them in our sig line. Nothing anymore! I have yet to see a sig line on any member anymore.

Bobby, I can see a signature line for you.  You have to turn on signatures in settings to see them.  Follow steps below.

    1.  Click on the upper right menu for your account, and click on "Account Settings".

    2.  Within Account Setting, click on the "Signature" section.

    3.  Make sure you have the toggle switch for signatures turned on.

  3. If it is gold it must be fairly low fineness. I base this on the fact that it has over twice the surface area of a US one dollar gold pieces but only 2/3rds the weight. A one dollar gold is already pretty thin. This would have to be almost like foil and pretty difficult to handle without bending it.

I'm sure I could bend it if that was what I wanted to do but it is actually quite rigid and not as thin as you would think.

Which supports Conder101's implication that it is not gold....or that it is extremely low fineness if it is.

Might be worthwhile finding someone who could test it to see if it is indeed gold.

  4. Just my 2 cents....BUT

    1) From those images, it does not appear to be gold. It looks more like brass to me. The oxidation of the surfaces and the overall dull look would support this being something other than gold.

    2) It does not look original (authentic) to the "period" that it would supposedly come from (c. 1700).

IMO, you have a brass klippe jetton struck relatively recently (e.g., 1950s) as a souvenir. It's hard to provide hard evidence for either of my statements, but they are based on many years of looking at and collecting this type of material.

    Good luck,

  5. I promise you, the "final goal" of NGC is to remove all PCGS coins from sets, even those grandfathered. The grandfathering scheme is simply not sustainable (not to mention, it makes basically ZERO sense).

You're right that it is probably easier to work up to the final goal incrementally and perhaps dull some of the criticism. I wonder how long the PCGS coins will remain?

Well, when the World NGC sets went "NGC-only" in January of 2012 many of us stated that it would not be long before they did the same for the USA sets. At the time, NGC definitively (vehemently) stated there were no plans to do as much. Here we are 4.5 years later, and they have now made the USA sets NGC-only starting Jan 2017, with grandfathered PCGS coins.

I figure maybe within another 4-5 years, they'll just exclude PCGS graded coins all together. They don't seem to care about the backlash of their non-inclusive decisions. NGC had set itself apart from PCGS as the more open minded and accepting (i.e., realistic) company that realized coins in the two brands of holders are roughly similarly graded. Someone "on-high" got it in their head that NGC should adopt the same exclusive mentality as PCGS, so it is now done.

Companies often don't care when decisions made in board meetings by "big-wigs" don't translate well to what their users and customers actually want or need. We're all little fish compared to the big bulk submitters like ModernConiMart and others. If they want their grading and business model to become known as the "#1 graders of modern bullion" then so be it.

    Alea iacta est.
