I'm reminded of when our Finnish exchange student said to my mother, "Oh. I have sex for money." My mother is a religious fanatic, and you can imagine her reaction. Finally the family language junkie, who had analyzed her accent patterns, held up a checkbook. "Checks, right?" "Yes. Sex." Then we told her what she'd been saying. She immediately colored like a second-degree sunburn.
Oh man, that's just AMAZING!! That poor exchange student.....I can't even imagine what a religious fanatic would say to that. Oh, to have been a fly on the wall that day at your house.....

Yeah. I remember being having to look twice when I got my 1969 proof sets. The improvement was remarkable.
They need to do something about the obverse of the Shield cents now. That obverse looks really flat and lifeless, IMHO. I can see how they tried to improve it from the 1990's style obverse, but it really isn't much of an improvement. My fiancée and I had lunch with my dad last week and he isn't even a collector and he commented on how unappealing the Shield cents are.

Compare your coins with a 1909 or 1910 Lincoln, and notice how much the master die has deteriorated over time. The compare with a 1968 example for even more "mush."
1968's are easily the worst looking Lincolns. Even the proofs look bad. It's quite interesting to put a 1968 and a 1969 Lincoln Cent side by side.....what a difference a new master die can make!

Hi Woods,
Sorry it took me 400 years to check out your site, but it looks good. Very professional. It's easy to navigate, it has good photos and the links and pages all work correctly. I think you're going to make some U.S. collectors quite happy with your offerings. Best of luck to you!

Hi Joe!!
Those are some pretty cool examples of what can happen with overzealous die polishing, as Greenstang said. But they're pretty cool to look at, I have to say.
Thanks for sharing those!

"Cuantos años tienes, Margarita?" he asked a young woman. "Tengo veinte anos," she said, haltingly. "Please," said the TA, "not in here."
Now, THAT is a great story!!! I got all screwed up with language learning....in middle school, I took German from 6th-8th grade. Then, I got to high school and switched to Spanish because the high school German teacher and I, well, did not get along. Let's say that. And it didn't help that I was in Spanish classes for all four years with this guy who would manage to say the absolute stupidest things you can imagine in Spanish. He really mangled things and would end up saying things like "Señor Hernandez is vomiting dogs" or "Señora Escobar is raining urine today" in Spanish. It was absolutely ridiculous.

I just wish new members would put the date, denomination and brief description of the issue in the subject line.
Post fill pictures of the Obv. and Rev, then zoom in on the area in question.
All good points, TJ, and good advice for Deana to follow going forward.

I'm really new to this and not even sure were to look at pictures of good double dies without watching hours of youtube lol.
Hi Deana.
First off, welcome to the forum and hello! And I'm with Jonathan....I don't see any evidence of doubling on your coin, either. Jonathan gave you a great resource with the article by Mr. Lange. I just wanted to add a couple more links for you that have good information on doubled dies and other errors and varieties. The first is our hosts' Variety Plus page:
https://www.ngccoin.com/variety-plus/
Secondly, Error-Ref is a great resource as well:
Variety Vista also has a listing of many U.S. coin varieties and some good photos of them:
And the last is Wexler's Die Varieties:
Also, since you mentioned YouTube, I want to cover that with you as well. YouTube is probably the worst place on the entire Internet to get coin information. There are a lot of people on there who post coin videos that are full of outright lies, half truths and sensationalist misinformation that will steer you wrong about coins every time. These people are looking to create click bait, so that they get more views on their videos. So, unless a coin video on YouTube is posted by a reputable numismatic organization, such as NGC, ANACS, PCGS, the ANA or the PNG, do not even waste your time with it. Joining this forum was a great step....there is a lot of experience and information here, and most of us are willing to do anything we can to help a new collector out.

I watched the video and it has nothing whatsoever to do with your coins. Just because one Eisenhower dollar is valuable doesn't mean they all are. Honestly, if you can't get this, then collecting coins is just not for you.

There is absolutely no reason for you to apologize about bringing up this coin. This just happens to be one of those issues we get frequent questions about, so sometimes our answers tend to be direct and without sugar-coating. No offense was intended on my part, and I am sure, no one else's either. I was just trying to make sure I got my point across. No doubt Mohawk and the others were, as well.
Welcome to the forum.
Bob, you're absolutely correct. This thread just started like way too many that raised the red flags I addressed in my answer. To the OP.....being new, there was no way you could have possibly known that. We get some problematic posters around here fairly regularly, and as Bob said, we're not ones to really sugar coat things. If you're looking to learn about coins and learn how to be a coin collector, then we'd be only too glad to help out. There were just a few things that I felt we needed to get out of the way, so I brought them up so we could get them out of the way and proceed.

I like it, James!! I have to find a good box....I want to get more German proof sets, but storage has been an issue. Maybe I can find something that would work well. Right now, the two I do have are on one of our bookshelves (lots of books in our apartment, for sure). They need something better, though.

There were 7 different variations of the Lincoln cent made in 1982, some were copper that weigh 3.11 grams and some that are the current zinc center with copper cladding which weigh 2.5 grams. There were a few just a small handful of copper blanks that were struck using the dies for the new zinc cent, those 3 or 4 known coins are what everyone is told they can find and get rich off.
I'm sorry to say that your chance of winning the lottery while simultaneously wrestling an alligator in Death Valley is better than the chance of finding another of those coins. No one knows for sure how those few came to be, one theory is that some left over copper blanks were stuck in a tote and got mixed in with the new zinc blanks. It is as good a theory as any, but we will never know for sure why, what we do know is that it is more than just unlikely that you will ever find one in your sock drawer.
We get this question here on this forum almost week, many times multiple times a day, and never has anyone had the magic bullet.
But we are happy to help so please do post your coins and we can help to identify them for you.
If we're talking the 1982-D Copper Small Date cent, here's something for the OP to consider. There are two of those coins known to exist 40 years after they were struck. By contrast, there are 32 reasonably complete adult skeletons of Tyrannosaurus Rex known to exist 66 million years after they went extinct in the Cretaceous-Paleogene Extinction Event. Making this a sheer numbers game, you have better odds of finding a 33rd reasonably complete adult Tyrannosaurus Rex than you do of finding a third 1982-D Copper Small Date cent.

On 1/31/2022 at 9:11 PM, Just Bob said:This is incorrect. The 2.5 gram copper coated zinc cent was first minted in 1982. There were 7 different types minted that year, including four types that weighed 2.5 grams. If you will enlarge the picture that James posted above, you will see the different types. All of them are common.
You really need to get the dollar signs out of your eyes. If you want to become a coin collector, that is great. We will welcome you and help you as much as we can. If you want to get rich quick, I suggest you try to find another way.
This is the absolute, unvarnished truth. The best way to fail at coin collecting and making money I've ever seen is to get into coins with the intention of making money with them. It ends as badly as taking a bunch of money and spending it all on lottery tickets. This approach is pretty much guaranteed to fail every time. Almost all dealers and successful sellers of coins started out as collectors and collected out of a genuine interest in coins for many years before they ever sold a coin. Virtually every successful dealer started out as a collector first and many still are collectors. That's the truth of the matter. Actually collecting is pretty much the only way to gain the kind of knowledge needed to be a successful dealer, and this process takes a very long time.
Without the knowledge gained by actually being a collector of coins without, as Bob so wonderfully put it, having dollar signs in your eyes, you will fail at this. You will fail as a collector and you will definitely fail at making money. Most people who just get into coins to make money usually end up losing a ton of money instead. If you genuinely want to collect coins out of a genuine interest in coins as collectibles and historic objects, that's good. You're in the right place. However, if you're looking to make money, I would recommend putting coins right out of your head and going to talk to a financial advisor about investments instead.
Also, if you're just looking to make money with coins, you're not going to do well around here. If you actually want to be a collector for the sake of being a collector and genuinely loving coins, we will help you in any way we can. However, if you're just looking to make money, most of us will not lift a finger to help you do that. I personally never help anyone who is here just looking to make money or sell coins......people like that have damaged the hobby way too much.

I guess I will have to go around to the cigar shops and try to find them. I keep them in a big boot box with a lot of desicant packs now. The one box holds from 1956 to 2008. Now I'm working one a new box. To bad there is no way to really display them all. same with the Mint sets. If you ever watched Mike on HSN, then you know how much space is needed. He is always trying to get people to buy the 1967 - 2008 sets for some outrages price.
Seriously outrageous prices. You can have the first 42 years of San Francisco minted U.S. Proof Sets for the low, low price of $1,199.95 and $20.47 shipping and handling:

Hello Jovany,
I do not speak Spanish, so I apologize for not being able to respond to you in Spanish. However, I'm with Hoopster.....your coin shows mechanical or machine doubling. Doubling of this type is extremely common and does not add any value or collectability to a coin.
-
I'm with the others....I do not think it's an actual mint error. I believe that whatever happened to your coin happened after it left the mint.

I haven't seen any of these movies . I have weird taste in films, though. Many films people think are absolute masterpieces, I cannot stand and many movies I adore are considered awful or outright goofy by many.

Man, TJ....you're just nailing the storage solutions lately!!! That looks awesome for some of those little ANACS slabs. I don't have a lot of them, but sometimes you see some nice East and West German coins in them, so you never know. If I do get some more, I know what kind of box to get now. Thanks!!!

No thanks. I know what kind of coin garbage is on YouTube, thank you very much. I don't need to go re-watch that same old, tired, lying, sensationalist, click bait garbage because that's exactly what it is. And, after 23 years in this hobby both collecting and selling, I definitely don't need you telling me to "go watch in learn". I think you're probably someone who has one of those garbage YouTube coin channels and you're trying to get views on it. Either that, or you're simply doomed with coins because you love YouTube so much. Nevertheless, it doesn't matter to me one bit because you're the one who's going to fail at this, not me. Have fun losing a ton of money following the advice of those YouTube videos you seem to love so much.

Oh man.....poor Paula!! I'm so happy for her that you were there to help her out! It must have been so cool to have someone from another country staying with you.....what an experience!!! And that Finns-Russians question your mom asked......that must have gone over great, given the history that the Finns have with the Russians .
