  1. I am trying to order a couple of copper nickel coins from Trinidad & Tobago. The potential seller says that FedEx there will not ship coins to the USA. I told him to call them collector items or numismatic items for collector. He wants me to quote a law that says it is ok to import foreign coins. Ouch. I have gotten many coins of many times the value from Europe with no problems, and many if most came through FedEx with nary a problem. One just last week in fact! Any suggestions?
  2. Actually, Danny Carr has overstruck some 2009 Eagles as "proofs" and they sell somewhere around 120 and above...
  3. Yes, I believe that Ringram coins in England has one, or at least one on their list at a favorable price for an EF or so coin. These come with rather poorly struck obverses so don't be alarmed.
  4. Honestly looks fine to me, but maybe in need of some non-abrasive soap and water and maybe acetone bath. Very nice looking coin - is it for sale?
  5. That border looks very questionable obverse and reverse..Mushy details under the wear. I vote faker...
  6. Wow! 1500 for a 1965 1/2? That is crazy. If the '84 reverse was of the Viking type I would have bid but just don't get moved by the "later" reverse.
  7. Yes, I saw that one....Were you the buyer? I believe including the juice it went for abut 1k USD.....
  8. OK, well the speculation is over. I measured a standard currency 1987 Viking coin out of the Midland Pack. Weight: 9.44 gm. I measured the silver piefort 1987 Viking Coin in the "OGP" PM packing Weight: 24.90 gm Naughty me, was able to pull the piefort out of pack (and put it back). Weight: 19.00 gm Measured the "golden-coloured" 1987 Viking proof in packing Weight: 14.95 gm. Extricated it and weighed out of OGP (slightly damaged that) Weight: 9.27 gm. Moreover, it did not have the density of gold, so that is most likely a virenium proof... Ah, pooh. Interestingly I saw that last month one of the Five Pound Knight on Horseback (?1985) in platinum just sold at Japanese auction for 420,000 yen = USD 4,035.
  9. Excellent points there. I don't have any other virenium pounds in the holder which I will take a picture of but would imagine their gross weight in holder would be largely the same from year to year. The holder is felt and glued together with a plastic shield or covering about the coin. I have many of the virenium of this coin from currency to the Midland Bank individual holder to the holder for all of the 1987 coins. The only holdered coins I have are the silver and silver piedfort of this design. I will report what all gross weights are. Do you (or other readers) have a weight of a pound coin in silver? Or weight in gold ( I think I may be able to find 83-86 gold weights in Krause, but are they accurate?). Also, I will weigh the coin in holder and then see how it matches up to the silver version in holder and also to a known virenium currency strike. Regardless will report back and hopefully tonight!
  10. I have looked again at the proof 1987 Viking Horseman which is pictured in this thread near the bottom of 4th page. It is enclosed in the original PM holder which is inside a velvet-lined box. When I pull the holder insert out and "feel" it for heft, the metal of coin feels quite dense - could it be gold? It is sealed in the holder. I need to find an XRF somewhere but the jewelry stores around here don't seem to have them or let me to use one. Any ideas on how I can test this coin without destroying the OGP? I know it is a stupid sounding question, but trying to figure this out. I can not find any useful information on this coin, even to the extent of the silver proof and silver piedfort versions I have of this coin.
  11. Thanks for your response. I will bring the catalogue to work and see if the manager can help out...I would very much be interested in Professor Malan's publication and a recording of the talk would be fine. PM sent.
  12. Ah, wonder if we could access that talk from the states? Well, PM me an email address and I could send you some photos if that would do. Quite a number of pages by recall and will have to find that catalogue that is buried somewhere...LOL. I will have a look around later this evening if you like and take pictures if that would do as my scanning device would require cutting up the catalogue itself. If I can locate the catalogue, I will see if somehow I can scan it but as I said that might be difficult without cutting it up which I can't do at this point. BTW, do you have any information on the Pretoria mint holdings of proofs and patterns prior to deaquisition? I have a number of coins from that gotten from numerous and varied sources. In particular I have been trying to track some 1927 GB patterns of the new silver coinage; I haven't slabbed them as I do not believe the TPGs will recognise them....Also, I am curious about some of the other GB proofs and patterns 1902 through however late they went. HA had a 1922/4 specimen proof set of GB go through their hands almost 20 years ago which also referenced them, etc.
  13. The sale itself was really something. What to bid on, there was just so much. I got three of the gold crowns: two of the Wyons, one in matte and the other brilliant, of Edward VII and George V, and a "Wreath" of Edward VIII. I recall they went for 500 pounds each, and that one of them was over 42 gms.!
  14. Of course, there are always us lurkers that would buy in the event you do not....LOL
  15. Hmm, never occurred to me as a problem as I also get small bits from small sellers and never had a problem. I will try to pay more attention as I have a small Ebay purchase of about 4 coins coming my way from UK.
  16. Big boys in London, etc. send me via FedEx and never a hesitancy even with big ticket items....
  17. Wow, that is impressive. How did you come on that knowledge - looks like a kind of footnote or something? Excellent detective work! For some reason I like this design, whimsical that it seems, but would like to get hold of the platinum and/or gold version(s).
  18. As promised, here are the photos....There appears to be a small "4" after each of the listings on the COA. I can't find any further reference.
  19. OK, back to the 1987 Viking coin. I took a picture of the silver proof (terrible quality) but more important - sort of - is the COA. That COA indicates there was a mintage maximum stated of 250 in gold and 50 of platinum. Were any in fact struck? As I've said none were seen. I'm at work so will post this PM.
