Way less expensive as a DIY project
SPHansen just wrote about bidding on a tabletop light kit on E-Bay. When I went to look at the setups and the price, I was so glad I just built my own. Some of these kits were between $49 and up to $225 I built my light tent (box) for under $10 I can change the background from white to light blue to black and to grey whatever I choose. I also chose to use CFL flood lamps (5000k) (natural daylight) which always remain cool to the touch.
I've attached a photo of the setup.

My first Morgan addition for the year
Sitting around last Tuesday evening and decided to visit Teletrade to see if they had anything I would be interested in acquiring. I found this gem level 1900 Morgan and was lucky to be the high bidder at over $100.00 below FMV (guess it was a slow night). It is housed in an older NGC slab which I think I will just keep it in for now. The coin obverse is misleading in the photo as it still has mint frost on it. The reverse is really quite nice as it has an overall pinkish/orange light tone with somewhat of a bluish haze near the bottom that really doesn't show up in the photo as well.
I do have one complaint though. I have purchased numerous coins through Teletrade and I wish they would change one thing. They put their item number label over the hologram on the reverse and when you remove it (ever so gently) sometimes the hologram is damaged. I wish they would think about doing it differently. Yes, I have discussed it with them in phone conversation but it seems it was for naught.
With that I will wish everyone great hunting in your next coin acquisition.

Really hard to tell and wary of buying
Last night I spent a good hour looking at various coins for sale on E-Bay and oh my do many sellers need help. Their photo's are either very blurry, show no detail are mis-colored because they are using the wrong settings on their camera. I probably saw maybe 10 sellers in that hour who had really nice photo's that showed their coins well and you knew what you were buying. The others, I can see why their coins weren't selling. Probably another 40 percent ONLY took one photo showing the obverse and no photo of the reverse. People, if you are going to list a coin, take both photo's. On E-Bay it cost a lousy dime more for the second photo, I can't believe sellers are that cheap. I would never buy from a seller that only shows one photo.
The 10 - 20 percent of sellers that took the time really had some great photo's.

    Added or upgraded the Franklins
Greetings once more everyone. Have enjoyed reading all the journals of late and seeing what some have added to their collections to start the year. Today I received my submissions back to start the new year and would like to share as well. As some of you know I have been concentrating on my Franklin collection the last half of 2011 and will continue into this year. I have upgraded or added 7 Franklins today. The crown jewel of todays additions is the 1957 PF 69 Cameo. Only 16 have been graded at this level. So to add another TOP POP to this collection is very satisfying. Also I have added a 1956 Type 1. This particular Franklin is very hard to find compared to the Type 2.
My journey does not stop here though. I am continuing to look for the 53 Franklin and upgrades to what I already have but am very proud of building this set from raw coins as was my goal from the beginning. It has not only been time consuming with the late night reading, researching, and conversations but overall I think my most satisfying collection to date. I dont know of anyone else that has built their Franklin collection from scratch (raw coins) but would like to talk anytime if you did.
Heres wishing great success to everyone with their collections for 2012.

    no extra points allowed
If you have noticed recently, NGC has added a slot for the 2011 Reverse Proof Eagle and also the 2011 S Eagle Mint State. If you have already added these coins from your set in the 25th Anniversary Silver Eagles Set you can add them to the Silver Eagles 1986 - Date Mint State and Silver Eagles 1986 - Date Proofs but you will NOT get any more points by doing so. So in essence you are filling a slot ONLY, with no points awarded for the coin. You would have to enter a completely separate graded coin for those slots to realize any points.
I have attached another 2011 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle Reverse Proof graded 70

    Not a real surprise
I can't remember the last time I used one of these to pay for anything Have a handful just sitting collecting dust. I think most numismatist probably saw this coming for awhile.

    Arrived today
My first 2 sets of the 25th Anniversary Eagles arrived today. Only entered the one set of course. That put me over the 70k mark for the year.
My first set all graded 70, my second set all graded 70 except the 2011, it graded MS69. So out of 10 eagles, 9 graded 70, 1 graded 69. Still holding the other sets for now till I decide what I want to do with them.
Good luck to all who are waiting for their grades.

dont tell me this was a mistake as it has been long overdue
What a pleasant surprise it was to come here today and see that my Kennedy collection had an adjustment on the points. Seems like most of the Kennedy years had an upward adjustment, have to check further. I gained over 8800 points today just on my Kennedy collection. Next stop, 70,000 points. Getting ready to add the SAE 25th Anniversary set. Should arrive within the next few days from grading. That should maybe put me really close to the 70K level if not over it.

For those that had their ASE sets on B.O.
Had 2 sets on B.O. from the mint with order number starting with 3838**** and it looks like they will be arriving. Charges just went thru this morning on my charge card for them. So keep the faith everyone on back order and maybe Christmas comes early.

A little of this and little of that
Greetings one more time my fellow purveyors of the coin.
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and was able to make it through the day without the old, one notch belt release or elastic waist band dance.
Have enjoyed reading all the recent journals and the subjects have been interesting. I recently have had a new safe installed and after researching various desiccants found one I thought I would share. It is the newest kind in that it does not use the Cobalt crystals. Bought it at Amazon.com. After it becomes saturated, you just recharge it in the oven.

Have been diligently working on my raw Franklins to submit for grading in the near future. Have learned so much about this coin this year more specifically how rare it is to find cameos of this coin from the 50s. To understand how the Mint went about striking these proofs and the tools they used on the dies and then using Ivory soap to clean the planchets that left many with the notorious milk spots.
Have been fortunate enough to talk to a few of the so called experts when it comes to Franklins over the last few months and the knowledge they shared about these under-appreciated coins.
Have given thought to the 25th Eagles. Is it wise to sell extra sets so fast or is it wiser to wait and hold the ungraded or graded sets to sell in the future ......... I guess only time will tell.
Did go to the Mints website tonight and the backordered sets are now showing up as in stock and reserved. Of course it doesnt mean anything until they are at the front door. As everyone knows the mint has there own meaning to their wording.
Renewed my membership recently. Didnt want to use my 5 free gradings on the Eagles since I have pre 1955 coins to get graded (Early Bird). Plus the modern tier is pretty inexpensive to begin with.
Good luck to everyone on the awards!
Hey wouldnt it be funny if they had an award for the best Obscure Set ?! I mean you couldnt see it, you dont know what really exist in it, but wow it was a good one !!!!
    Till next time ......

    Easy fellow collectors ....
After reading all the concerned posting about NGC getting your boxes, felt I would ease your concerns.
No I am not affiliated with the USPS in any way first off.
When you ship something registered, it becomes a bonded item which means it is ONLY stored and handled in a BONDED area. (Under lock & key) Only a minimum personal will even handle your box, or whatever you sent. The masses are not exposed to your item. When it comes into the bonded area it is signed for and when it leaves it is signed out again so there is a paper trail of who handled it.
Trying to "track" your item on line when you sent it registered is impossible when compared to just having a delivery confirmation number. They do NOT show every stop and handling of registered items on line for obvious reasons. They will show that the item was delivered. Anything in between that and when you sent it really means nothing.
It is a really safe and secure way to ship anything of value. I have never had anything lost or not delivered sending it registered. I sent my box on the 15th and it arrived today. I didn't expect for NGC to list it yet as I knew they would be behind with every mothers son and daughter sending theirs in.
By the way, my info on the USPS comes from a close friend who has been in their employ for almost 30 years. He worked in the bonded area for over 10 years.
Even if it was lost or stolen (shi# happens I know) that's why you insure it.

Tonight 52 years flashed before my eyes.
    Greetings once again all;
I wanted to stray off the main course here and take a moment to reflect. I was fortunate tonight to view the ISS (International Space Station) fly overhead not once but twice. As I watched with the amazement at the first sighting tonight I thought back to my childhood when I was 7 and together our family and neighbors stood outside and watched with utter disbelieve as we viewed flying over our heads the Russian satellite Sputnik.
To think we have come this far in a persons lifetime is to me a monumental feat. We went from not knowing how to launch a rocket with any great degree of success to putting up our own satellite, to landing men on the moon, to an orbiting space station that people live on.
So yes, when the ISS passed overhead I thought back to that time, looking up, to see a man-made object in outer space circling the Earth.
For those that are interested, below is the link so you can get the viewing times for your area this month to view the ISS
    http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/sightings/cities/skywatch.cgi?country=United+States
I sincerely hope that everyone take a minute of of their night this month and look to the skies and think about what you are seeing and how we got there ..........

Now there is error labels and this one takes the cake
This was so good I just had to share it.
While checking out E-Bay tonight I found this listing
    item number: 320783861177
I wrote the seller and asked:
the certification on the slab says 1950, the date on the coin says 1959
    whats up ?
    His response was this:
this coin was slabbed by PCI as a 1950 (an error on their part). Such an occurrence is rare and makes it more collectable and more valuable. The 1959 is valuable in it's own right, but in this slab, commands a premium price.

    Says one thing means another
    Greetings all speed dialers;
Went to check the status of my order today and the status said it was on hold which was explained earlier in a journal. (all orders are placed on hold) then looking at the bottom it stated backordered, expected ship date 11/11/2011. (is that an omen ... 11 11 11)
the lady at the Mint told me that if it states backordered it will NOT ship before 4 - 6 weeks from yesterday, period. She then informed me that they were instructed at 4:00 pm to start putting the rest of the incoming orders on a waiting list. Then she said if you got an order in before the 4:00 pm EST time you should be good. I know the key word there is "should" but that's all she would say.
I also have to echo Gary's words on the way this was
    handled !!!!
Also on another note I don't know how many of you received the offer from ModernCoinMart on purchasing these sets for them for a $60.00 profit per set back to you but I did received such offer but did not participate in it. I am sure there were many who probably did participate and by doing so hurt the chances of the common collector. I don't know about everyone else but $60 or $300 bucks to screw a fellow collector seems wrong. They actually wanted you to place an order for the max (5 sets) for them.
This is the second time I have received such email from MCM.
Oh well, I guess there's a catch and a crawl for everyone.....
I truly hope all of the regular collectors out here get at least one set.

    returned in change
Greetings once more my friends of the board. I'm sitting here getting caught up with all the latest journals and thought I would write one myself.
First up is I went to Menards to return something I had purchased the week before and in the refund money was a buffalo nickel. I cannot tell you when the last time I received one of these in change. Oh it wasn't a good one by the way. Worn down so much there was no date on it. But cool none the less to get one.
Was checking out the Bay last night and came across another lame seller. This guy was selling an 1886 O Morgan that the heading stated One Of A Kind Christ On The Cross. Search it on E-Bay you will find it. He is ONLY selling it for $80,999.99
I wrote the seller and told him my thoughts (you can fill in the blanks yourself). It just amazes me that these sellers actually think someone would drop that kind of money for this scam.
    I mean really don't they have a life ......
Hoping to have some great news to announce soon if I am fortunate again.
Really looking towards the arrival of Autumn as it is my favorite season and with Winter right behind, I imagine all of us will concentrate more heavily on our collections as we stay indoors more. Until those cold days arrive though hope everyone gets outside and enjoy the fall colors that nature paints for us.
Good, no make that great fortune to all in searching for that next winner of a coin.

Would you buy a coin that has this
Would you buy a coin that has been "thumbed"? My own opinion is I would not as it takes away from the beauty of the coin. For those that do not know what "thumbed" is, it (was/is) a way to I.D. a coin you possessed.
The only problem was the oil and acids on your thumb etched the coin permanently. I do not know if NCS can remove this or not but I believe for the most part that practice has for all intents and purposes disappeared.
I just happened to come across a listing on E-Bay for just such a coin.
    Here is the item number

    Feel it is an honor
    Good day all;
I just found out that not one but two of my coins are featured in the new NGC Coin Explorer. The 1961 Franklin PF and the 1951 Franklin PF. Needless to say I felt honored.

    another gem for the Morgans
    Greetings once more ya'll
Today I was fortunate to add three spectacular coins to two of my collections. I added the PF70UC from 1985 and 1986 to my Kennedy's and added a MS65 1888 to my Morgan collection. It had been a while since I had upgraded the Kennedy Collection and I have been on the prowl for a really superb "gem" 1888 which I was lucky enough to spot on line and won.
I have attached a photo of the Morgan.
