since I have upgraded a Kennedy
Today I upgraded a 1980 Kennedy to PF70UC. I won the coin at the on line auction Heritage Auctions. This was the first time I had purchased from them. It is always nice to come back to your sets and revisit and upgrade when you can.
Best of luck to everyone on filling those slots

    from this extreme heat
Greetings everyone. Well, if you have been in the midwest like me you know about the extreme heat we have been having. I have not even looked at a coin for a week. A/C has been running 24/7. Man, it has gotta break soon (heat) (we can only hope) Today with the heat index it was 115 here in central IL.
Anyway hope everyone is staying cool.
I will leave you with our forecast for tomorrow from a local TV station. This is finally a bit too much even for me

or should I say "Follow the Yellow Brick Road" to NCS
Just sent off 2 more Franklins for conservation to NCS again. Hoping for the same great results and maybe something extra.
I have attached a pre-photo of the obverses showing how mucked up they are. (notice the black rim area's and also in the field on one and overall haze on both) When they return, will post again with before and after pics for all to see.

now is the time to get a few
Just went to SilverTowne web site to check their price on 1 oz silver bars and just placed an order at $29.40/bar. I haven't seen under $30.00 in a long time. So if you want to add to your bullion or just start collecting some silver now is the time....

    back to NGC
    Greetings one and all
Received two new coins today. First was my latest addition to my Kennedy collection. A chilling frosted clad Mr. Kennedy that looks fantastic and secondly another presidential addition to my Lincoln shield cents my 2012 Mr. Lincoln. If you notice,
Mr. Lincoln is mounted backwards, what NGC calls a mechanical error. I called NGC and they will take care of it naturally.
Side Note: The 2012 Lincoln Shield seems to be a hard coin to find in PF70UC which makes this acquisition all the more desirable.
Great luck in finding that next coin for your set

When you're in this long enough we all get that feeling....
After reading Kamakazy's journal about not having the desire or drive anymore, I'm sure we all can relate to it to some degree if you have been in this long enough. Sometimes it is best to just take a long break and then come back to it, sometimes maybe if you rethink your sets and sell some to start some new sets, another thought would be what you collect sometimes one needs to focus on another form of collecting and once in a blue moon maybe it is just as good to wash your hands of it. I really will miss having him around the CS here. I hope Kamakazy will someday find the fire again that drives why we collect what we do. Until then my friend, we will keep a coin on the shelf marking your spot here at the CS.
I have attached an off topic (coins) photo that I sometimes move into just to change it up a bit when I get tired of one type of collection.
It is just a small sampling of silver certificates I collect as well.

First time and I was jamming
    Greetings everyone;
Well, I submitted my first coin to NCS for conservation and then on to NGC for grading. Since it was my first time dealing with NCS I went in with hopes of salvaging something better than what I was submitting. Oh my was the first words out of my mouth when the coin arrived today and I had my first look at their work.
I have attached a before and after photo for all to see but even the before photo doesn't really show how bad this coin was. It had these "black" spots on the obverse and reverse that looked awful, besides the overall haze. I really thought I was going to get a call with, I'm sorry there is nothing we can do for this coin. Not only did they make it look like it just came out of a fresh proof set from the mint but it graded at NGC as well with regular label !!!!! WOW, I am still in awe of everyone's work at NCS. Well done everyone at NCS, you made my day, week and month and I must admit what a great birthday present as well.
If you have a special coin that needs help do not hesitate sending it in to NCS.
Hope everyone has a great week.
    take care my friends...........
    Mike

    but far from finished
    Greetings my fellow collectors;
Today I filled the last open slot I had for my Franklin Proof set. It is now complete, 100%.
I completed this set from all raw coins and submitted to NGC for grading. Although it is complete now, it is far from done as there are numerous slots I am in the process of upgrading. In fact as I type this, I have more raw Franklins I recently purchased on their way to me now. This was my "goal" though for this Franklin set. To do it the "old school" way. Although I have to be honest I was tempted at a few "slabbed" Franklins I saw on line at the auction sites, I kept to my goal of nothing but raw. I do believe I will pause for a brief moment and relax and be proud of this set and what it means to me. But ONLY for a brief moment......
Thank you for sharing this journey with me if you have followed along and am looking forward to not only upgrading some of the Franklins but anticipating what next new adventure awaits in my collecting trip.

2 Upgrades to my Franklin Collection
    Greetings once again my brethren and sisters of the round;
Today I upgraded 2 of my Franklin Proofs. The 1958 and 1959.
The 1959 is a "Key Date" in the Franklin Proof series with less than 1% of total mintage exhibiting enough cameo contrast on both obverse and reverse to warrant a cameo designation. I was lucky enough to land a PF67CAM.
I wish everyone great luck in their search for what they seek.

to all who wrote and helped
Just wanted to say to all who reached out to WKF. I have heard from many of you and to let you know that Kerry called and was so appreciative and wanted to convey to all who cared enough to send an e-mail etc. how much you touched him. I'm sure Kerry will thank you in his own way but until he reactivates his membership he did want me to pass that along.
Well done all, well done !!!!!!

With all the rubarb going on with PCGS
I am not really impacted by the recent rubarb going on with NGC removing PCGS graded coins from world sets since I do not collect them but now that most of the knee-jerk responses, and thought out responses have subsided to an extent I believe I have an idea that might satisfy both sides (but then again it may not, ) I suggest that all of the people involved contact NGC and suggest that NGC offer a cross-over from PCGS to NGC slabs for say a flat rate of 5 dollars a coin or 3 dollars or whatever but you get my drift. That way all the collections can be reinstated to the previous state and NGC by changing their requirements are extending an olive branch (sort-of-speaking) to those that were affected.
Just an idea fellow collectors but I think it would be fair for all concerned. And for those that do not want to cross-over then that is their choice.
Again this is from someone who is on the outside with this particular dilemma.
Best of luck to all concerned.

is a CAC sticker really anything more than "another label"
Over the course of the last few months we have discussed all the various labels one can acquire for a particular coin. Although we have discussed this subject briefly in the distant past I thought I would open it up to see if new opinions have been formed or old ones changed. The subject I am talking about is the CAC sticker. Does it really add any value to a particular coin in the eyes of the grassroots collector ?
In my opinion I believe it is nothing more than a group trying to sell a bill of goods to the collecting populace, an idea. I could really care less whether a slab has a CAC sticker on it. NGC does fine by me with their (+) and (*) designations. Why would you want to pay an additional premium for another "label" that NGC already provides. According to NGC, (3) graders determine the grade of a coin. So along comes CAC and they want to put their two cents in and a label for additional money.
CAC states that a graded coin without their label doesn't mean the coin isn't within the guidelines for a particular grade but that it isn't on the upper end. (Not a direct quote from their website but along those lines) Well, that's what the plus and star from NGC designate, isn't it ?!
I really believe in another 5 years CAC won't even be around. It was a fad when it came out but as we all know, fads fade. Again, I feel CAC was/is trying to sell a bill of goods but I'm not buying.
    Any thoughts ??

    Thank you NGC
Just did a test posting and looks like it's all fixed and you can go back to writing your journals as before with comma's and all.
thanks NGC for tracking it down and getting it fixed

Since he didnt post to chats as well to respond
Just about everything you stated I totally disagree with. Markets are up, employment is down, Congress will not have anything to do with whoever takes office next and its obvious you have not been watching the auctions as almost every top pop I have seen has gone for premium dollars.
And youre citing one source ONLY as the sole voice of what the real skinny is ???

    Best price I have found
    Greetings;
Just wanted to pass along some info to those that collect Mint State ASE. If you are looking to buy an NGC graded slab Paradise Mint is having a great sale now. You can buy MS70 graded Eagles for 75 - 76 dollars (free shipping) most labels are available.
Other sites I have searched are in the 90 dollar range.
Just a heads-up to my fellow collectors.
    Best to all

You can contact me as stated in the listing.
    Thanks for looking.

Is this seller for real using this photo
Ran across this auction tonight and could do nothing but laugh. Seller is selling ONLY one coin. Can you guess which one it is ?? You should see his other auctions for raw single coins !!!!

this is a temporary workaround till NGC finds a permanent solution
I have finally figured out why when we post a journal and we want to have it discuss on chat board it does not give us the option on a majority of journals but it seems to work on a few.
When you check Use Message boards login and you enter your info to have your journal be able to be discussed on chat board it will work IF
in the TITLE, OR the TEASER, OR in the BODY you DO NOT have ANY APOSTROPHE WORDS at all. Quotation marks are taboo as well they will not allow it to work. Instead of doesnt with the apostrophe just write does not, etc.
Hope this helps everyone and if I am correct you should be able to discuss on chat board with this journal.

Tried to add the feature on my last journal "Discuss on Chat Boards" but it didn't work again. Hopefully they get it figured out soon. Will try with this journal one more time.

I see this all the time
When an auction starts (particularly on E-Bay) and it runs oh say 7 days. Also say it starts out at $.99 and there are always someone who thinks they are going to actually get a $200.00 coin for under $10.00 so they bid it up to $10.00 Then John Q comes along and he bids it up to $100.00 on the first day, now comes the people who run up the price of the coin till it is beyond FMV. They bid it up to $200.00 on day 2. So day 5 comes along and someone who has maybe 25 ratings at E-Bay decides he wants in and now the $200 coin is now $300.00 with no signs of stopping. Then when the few who really know the market for this coin and would of been serious bidders that maybe would go 125% of FMV before numbnuts bid out their A** and ran the price up and over anything reasonable so they are forced (if they want the coin to pay way over FMV) But here's the kicker and I see this so much. The last 20 minutes of the auction all the numbnuts that ran the price up are no where to be found. They didn't really have any idea or really didn't want the coin. They probably had $300 to burn and even if the coin was a $50 coin they bid their $300 and then disappear.
Now I've talked to some who think it is shill bidding and I must admit it wouldn't surprise me even though it is against policy but how do you prove it But I still believe it is just numbnuts (pardon my classification) who don't have any idea what they are doing and just run the price up.
    Drives me nuts !!!

    On a side note:
I do believe one time I encountered a shill auction at E-Bay. I bid on a coin and at the last 2 seconds someone outbid me by $5.00 and won. Within, oh maybe 15 seconds the person who was auctioning off the coin sent me a message (contact form) and it was a 2nd chance offer. Now how would he/she know the winning bidder was defaulting that fast. It was like end of auction, oh here is a 2nd chance offer all within 15 or 20 seconds.
Well, I will step off the soapbox now and yield to the next individual. Just thought I'd mix it up a bit and complain about something other than PCGS coins.
One last item. For those that collect the ASE Mint State, you will notice that the slot opened for the 2012. I contacted Dena and she informed me that any of the 2012 ASE can be used in that slot. So you can pick your label and it will work, W or S whatever. There will NOT be a slot for the W Mint or S Mint, it is just a generic slot. If you so chose to go the label route (purchase each type label)NGC created a new set type that will accommodate all the various labels. (For those that would like a bullet for the pistol step to the front please)<<<< sarcastic humor.
With that I bid you adieu
