How about an early half-dollar thread?? POST 'EM IF YOU GOT 'EM!

1,427 posts in this topic

Hello- Here are three halves that I think qualify for your thread- Each of these has a jewelery ring- I am interested in any observations about these including whether or not I should remove the ring, condition, etc. I am presently evaluating and preparing to sell a family collection and I am in the process of re-educating myself after decades away from coin collecting. I think these are pretty nice pieces. I have several others that qualify for your thread here and I will try and get those posted as well- no rings on those but they are all more average condition as well. Thanks and I hope someone enjoys these pics.

Say again I am not very happy with my scans- does any one have suggestions for me or maybe know of a tutorial some where- I have a hard tim capturing the lustre in the coins,

A newp from the Chicago ANA last month...

:o

OK, how much did that set you back? Looks great! I see some hairlines so MS 62 (unless the lines are on the slab)?

JOM,

AU 53 ... and yes the coin was gently wiped at one time

as there are light lines - none into the surface of the coin though.

Its so pretty - and I have always wanted a nice example of the 1836 RE.

Yup - it ran me a few dollars - but far less than a MS 62 !!

Lance: As you know I'm lovin' the 1814! As are a number of others that is too long to list.

BTW, did you get the 1824 from Sheridan? I think I saw that on his site awhile back but his photos are so bad (scans actually) that I just didn't bother. If it is I probably should have at least looked at it based on his description!

When the right 1814 AU+ comes along I'll remember you first, I promise.

I picked up the 1824 from a dealer in Roseville, CA. Great luster and color but AU50-wear. (The Roger Solomon ones I got from Sheridan are the '13, '20 and '28, all AU58.)

You scored at Long Beach, I see. I like them all but the 1809 is my favorite. Yum!

Yeah, I kind of "ran into" the 1809...by accident. BTW, the dime I showed was from Solomon but not the auction. Evidently there were some coins for sale at some point but weren't consigned to auction..they were just being sold by Sheridan.

No...I didn't think the 1824 was necessarily from the Solomon collection but Sheridan had a toned one listed. Like I said the pic was bad so I just thought you might have got it. Guess not.

Another question Lance: I was told Sheridan doesn't come down to the Long Beach show and hasn't for a few years. I could SWEAR I saw the guy this past June. Whatever the case, why doesn't he come down? I know many out of state dealers are avoid it now but since SD is actually in the state anyway.... (shrug)

Sheridan Downey picked "50 select rarities" from Roger Solomon's collection and used an auction to sell them at the ANA show. The auction alone brought in around $600k for Roger's widow, IIRC.

He had many more that were equally nice but not perhaps as scarce or in demand. I bought those three CBH's from these "other" coins. Sounds like that's how you got that lovely dime.

I think Mr. Downey attends only the bigger shows. I don't think he's ever been to a Santa Clara show and it's only 10 miles from his home. He's retired from law but seems pretty darned busy with this hobby/business and an active social life.

Which is why I thought it strange that he wasn't here last week and hasn't been for a few years. However, like I said I would SWEAR I saw him in LB in June so I'm not sure that latter info is accurate. Anyways, I was just curious if you knew....

I'll ask, Jom. I want to stop by and see a few coins. I'm not really that chummy. I got to know him a little when I shot the 50-rarities for the ANA auction.

If anyone is interested, here is a slideshow of those 50 spectacular coins. The photos don't do them justice. There are some truly wonderful coins, including some great CBH's (to keep this on topic).

I'll do the same. Here's a RE I've had for a year or so. I still can't find a 38 or 39 to go with it...
