Hazard a guess as to what coin this once was?

That was my first thought but a knockout usually has a small metal tab on the edge that I do not see.

It's a near completely worn shield nickel.  Left side pic has light impression of the bottom of the 5 near center. 

the coin is slightly smaller than a Buffalo nickel

   This would be something for the ultimate "lowball" set, except that you're supposed to be able to determine the date.

Looks like a coin that got forgotten in rock tumbler I agree it somewhat had small outline like a V nickel
