1941 Walking Liberty Proof no AW intials

Can someone tell me more about the 1941 Proof with no initials versus the 1941 with initials. I know it's from over polishing the dies.

Is this common? Population or percentage of population seems low compared to the overall mintage. Seems like low interest at the moment. Which would you prefer?

Thank you for your opinions and time.

Currently looking at a 1941 Proof 65 seems like a decent price but it looks cloudy..probably why it's marked down.

Yes, it is just due to an overpolished die, which tends to occur more often with proof issues, whose dies are highly polished.  My PCGS certified 1941 proof half dollar happens to be one of them but is unattributed on the holder, as many likely are, and I did not pay a premium for it.  Grading services charge an additional fee ($18 at NGC) to attribute a variety like this one, and it often isn't worth it. A substantial percentage of proof 1941 half dollars appear to be of this variety.

Many if not most '41 proof Walkers I have seen are missing the AW initials. Some missing the AW were holdered without designation meaning that the census report is not accurate in that respect.

With that said I am sure that a coin that had the AW visible with otherwise full detail is the more desireable coin. Also know that there are other dates of proof Walkers missing the AW for the same reason the 41s are missing that detail. My 41 proof Walker shows no evidence of designer initials and does not indicate that on the holder.

I noticed quite a few with no initials without the designation and comparing the census report.

That was one reason I reached out. Thank you, I don't have any proof Walkers yet so I'm just going to wait then. $385 doesn't seem worth it, I will keep looking.

Your image shows decent obverse detail with a reverse die that has been polished a bit more thus missing that detail and otherwise a nice coin ! You really should pick up a copy of Roger Burdette's book 1936 to 1942 U.S.Proof Coins wiich explains the known die pairs in detail.

Good ole@RWB would appreciate that. I'm sure it's a good read. I will look into it (thumbsu.

Do you think $385 is a good buy for this particular piece? Asking since you have obtained one yourself.

I'm assuming your fond of Walkers? I do have one 1944 MS65 maybe I should hold off and put the money towards another piece that is different to add. Unless the price is too good to pass up for this one?

Pictures/lighting suck its much better in hand with some colorful toning just wish I didn't have those two black spots meh.

An NGC Pf 65 coin would be a good deal at that price. Pf 63 or 64 may still be a reasonably good buy. In a few minutes I will post mine.

Here is my Pf 67 piece which is how I like them. Nicer coins do exist but higher grade more expensive examples often are 3 to 4K and are often toned or hazy. This one is a deeply mirrored frosty coin but not quite cameo, and is very scarce as such.  coin

There is a CoinFacts page on the 1941 50C No "AW" Proof if you haven't seen that yet.

Thank you, I didn't get too much info from it other than price guide and inaccurate census. I did just see one that was a Proof 65 CAC go for almost $2500 listed though wow.

Beautiful coin!!! Ouch makes mine and the one I'm looking at like spare change..

I don't know what you do for a living but you must be able to afford it or have really good connections. Congrats again on that fine specimen!! Definitely jealous

Do you have a registry?

You can view my registry sets that include NGC images. I am a man of modest means but admit I paid premium money for nice deep mirrored spot free coins. All of my '36 to '42 proof coins have been CAC verified either by me or were already CAC when I purchased them. I understand NGC no longer recognizes them but mine are grandfathered from earlier days. I cannot give an explanation for this decision but can only surmise that it is motivated by legal challenges from outsiders.

Any of these proof Walkers with cameo contrast will bring multiples of price guide values.

You can find almost everything about 1936-42 proofs, including loss of designer's initials, in my book on the subject. Member "FlyingAl" has done some additional analysis and has some excellent examples in his collection.

Same, I have paid some high prices for some. Nothing in that range though. I have been buying lesser quality so I can have more..for now ;).

I will have to take a look at your registry sets.

I would check the spots to be sure they are not carbon spots for that amount of money. Even so the spots do pop out at ya.

The book's data come directly from the Medal Room notebook and refer to each die and every pairing of the dies and the number of pieces struck from them.

I am eminently unqualified to pass judgment on your choice of coin. (I no longer remember where the designer's initials are supposed to be!)  If you can hold out for a better example to come along, do so. Excelsior!  NY state motto meaning, Ever Upward.

Will do, thank you! Thanks for explaining your use of excelsior. Whenever i see that word used I think of Stan Lee saying it. xD

I thought NY state motto was "Hey I'm walking here!" Just playing ;)
