I received an email from David Kahn Rare Coins - and spotted a beautiful

Quarter - in AU 58 - which I already owned in the same grade - but while

I was already looking , I looked at other series I collect. I found this V Nickel

which seems very nice.... I should have it by next weekend.

The other day, I picked up a Type One 1892 Quarter in Proof 65+.

This coin started out { as far as I can tell } as a MS 65 and was

sent back to PCGS for regrade. It received a new serial number

as well as a "+" { Plus Grade = MS 65+ }..

This coin was sold at a Heritage Auction twice, once as a 65 and

a year or so later as a 65+.I found the coin on Great Collections

this past weekend. The coin now has a Green Bean - CAC - sticker.

The mintage for an 1892 Proof Quarter was 1,245. It is estimated that the

Type One variety had a production of 1/10 of the original mintage.

Finding it made my day...

Spotted what I believe to be an undergraded 1894 Proof Dime - and at

a very good price for a PR 64. It's on it's way as I type this.

Once again, if the images are coming up as Links, I'll go on the

Lap Top and pull images from Photobucket.

Was looking for Dimes to fill in my Everyman set -

spotted this coin from Julien L. - and I thought I'd

try this out to see if it crosses - if not - I'll stick it in

my Type Set Dansco Album....

Spotted, what I considered an under graded Dime, and last night,

I won at the Heritage weekly auction:

Years ago, I once had a nicer one { PCGS 66 CAM } but sold that Proof Set

to fund my MS Halves... Sorry, no immediate images, they were lost when I

had my lap top worked on. I thought I had it backed up...maybe I do someplace.

Have not posted in almost three weeks and I was very pleased to see

some activity .... Greysoldier's Columbian Half is stunning !! It's also one

of my favorite Barber designs - and was one of my Grandfather's as well,

as he routinely found them in circulation. He saved a few - which I still have.

He also saved a choice AU 58 1892 Half, but no where nearly as nice as

the one Greysoldier posted ( which looks to be close to MS 65 (+ ? ).

Recently a good friend from ATS and I were discussing his newest pick up,

a 1916-D /d Quarter .... yet, the one posted by Pocket Art looks far nicer,

I'll guess it's a 66.... Very nice lustrous coin.

I appreciate you guys sharing your coins.

On 3/28, I posted the 307,811 "hit" on this thread, the other day, there were 311,541

Hits ... an increase of 3,730 viewers ... By 4/20/16. That's about 1,200 hits per week.

.... and sadly only three new postings.

I encourage everyone who reads this thread, to post a coin at least once a week. If you

have an interest in Barbers, you must have an image or two tucked away that you'd like to share.

They don't have to be POP TOPS .... just show us what you like.... A good friend likes VG

Nickels and Dimes - his collection is a labor of love - and I enjoy seeing it and discussing

his sets - as when I was his age, I also collected that grade - as a matter of fact I collected

VG 10 Barbers for close to 30 years. It's a fun way to collect without breaking the bank. It wasn't

until I hit 50 before I started my AU/MS sets.

I won't post another coin until after Central States.... Keeping my fingers crossed I nab

the last AU Dime I need for my collection.

Recently, I upgraded my 1903-S Dime from XF 40 to a choice AU 55 - via JJ Teaparty.

I also sent in 53 coins to CAC' and I forgot that many current coins - Jeff Nickels & Rossie Dimes from the 40's are not allowed to be submitted. But, Lincoln cents, Washington Quarters and Walkers are ... Go figure... The end result was I received a 35% CAC result on my "corrected"

submission.

Many of my newer V Nickels and Barber Dimes were CAC - the ones I was on the fence

about, did not pass, so no surprise there. My newest 1904-O Quarter in PC 58 did not pass.

It's a bit too toned for their liking I guess, but it's PL and the flash under the luster is amazing.

( It's a coin I bought from Will Robins - via: Yankee Coin on eBay - this is a very deserving

plug for a great kid !! )

Have fun hunting !!

As a fan of Barber's Commemoratives, I sometimes think they are under-appreciated as some of America's earliest commemorative coinage. His 1900 Lafayette Dollar is perhaps my favorite with the exceptional portraits of George Washington and the marquis de Lafayette on the obverse. Enjoy this example...

Greysoldier - nice Lafayette - I once had one in 64 -

it was part of the sale of my entire 144 Piece Set.

Which is now part of the J3B set ATS.

Spotted this OGH - with a CAC - and I was looking for a MS

example of this date - well, no longer !

I have the same date { sans the RPM } also in a 62 ...

I couldn't resist this one...

I also picked up a replacement for my 1892-S Half - I had a nice XF 40 -

but - this crusty AU 58 { CAC } suits me better.

Beautiful pickups Elbesaar, an interesting and underrated series in dimes, quarters, and halves. Thanks for sharing!

The 1916-D that I posted I agree is a higher grade; at least a 65 perhaps.

Change to quarter in 1892.

Sir:

In accordance with your verbal request of the 21st instant I asked the Engraver for a statement relative to the change in the design of the quarter dollar and he has supplied me with the following information:

As it was decided to change the subsidiary coins for 1892, the Director of the Mint, Mr. Leech, advertised for designs and many were sent in, but Mr. St. Gaudens, who was appointed one of the committee to pass upon the designs, objected to everything submit-ted. Therefore, Mr. Leech called upon the Engraving Department of this Mint to prepare designs and have the dies ready for the New Year 1892. There were only a few weeks to do the work and no time to prove the dies or make alterations. The instructions were to strike some coins and make such alterations as would be found necessary afterward. The change in the quarter dollar was made because the border was originally quite narrow and it was claimed the coin did not stack well with the old design, which had a very broad border. The border was therefore increased, leaving less room for the inscription and stars and necessitating a rearrangement of the stars.

Respectfully,

/s/ Albert A. Norris

Thanks for the post, RWB. As the Seated Quarter was minted from 1838 to 1891,

a change was called for. The egos of Barber and St Gaudens were such that no

living artist could meet the standards these two committee heads had set. It's a

shame none of the work produced by the competitors was ever saved for posterity.

The accepted design of 1892 Quarters and Halves omitted the clouds over the Stars

(Thank God) but as discussed the Type One of the Quarter was changed in 1892

because of die chipping. The simple reworking of the stars and the Eagle's (left facing)

Wing tip being repositioned over the "E" was enough to alleviate the problem.

As the Type One and Type Two mintages were not separated - we can only make an educated

guess as to the proportion of Ty 1 & Ty 2 coins. I only have one Proof Quarter, it's the 1892

Type One as its believed that only 100-125 were produced out of a mintage of 1,245.

I guess I fell in love with this series because my Dad and Grand Dad had saved some

amazing AU/MS Barbers. I just picked up where they left off.

I spotted a nice AU 1906 Quarter for the "Everyman" set - in AU 58.

It's just a gleaming little jewel - and eventually will go to the Bean Factory !

Its image is too large to post from my iPad.... Off to Photobucket and my Lap Top !!

The quarter helps demonstrate how seemingly small changes in layout of design elements can have a significant impact on how the design is coined.

The new 1916-S Dime in PC 58 arrived the other day - and its much nicer

in hand than in the images [ its always that way, isn't it ? ]

I stumbled across this last night - placed a well thought out bid -

and this morning, I saw I was outbid by $50. I upped my bid by $100

and this evening, I only had to pay $50 more - not $100.

Its not the wildest coin - understatement - but I really can't tell what I'll

actually be getting - a screamer like what is shown in the slab shot {?}

image_zpswbketdjh.jpeg

....or... a very subtle coin like these larger images {?}

image_zps1xtkxuw3.jpeg

Yes, the coin is from Stack's Bowers - and its a Type One 1892-S in 58.

A coin I have been searching for - for 5 yrs. Finally !! :whee:

Thanks, Greysoldier. I think it'll work out just fine ! Really looking forward to its arrival. While rummaging thru my Photobucket account - { which is a mess, no

matter how hard I tried to keep it orderly !! } - ...I stumbled across another I received on consignment shortly after I sold off the majority of my Barbers back in 2011. I wish I had bought that one then - as it sold for a song [per se].

89111038.jpg

I remember having a hard time selling it because of the toning. I had no plans

on starting another collection of Quarters at that time.

The other night - I ran across another tough date in the Half series - and where

my example is a 45 - and the new target grade is 53 - I couldn't resist.

Even my first set - sold in 2011 - didn't have a great example even though

it was an AU 55.
