  1. Thanks, I have since found a reputable source that addresses the concern. I sold around $90,000 NGC graded coins on auction this year, so it’s been a relief to find that source
  2. Hoping to find a source for determining the historical value of NGC graded coins. IRS requires a documented source for determining capital gains tax from an inheritance. Value of coin at time of inheriting-sale amount of coin at time of sale. Great collections auction provided the point of sale info. Needing historical value for December 15, 2021 on both U.S. and foreign gold and silver NGC graded coins.
  3. The multitude of tiny scratches going in the same direction, as well as the tone of the reflection suggests that it has been "cleaned" "whizzed" "polished"
  4. Gave them to the niece for her beginning collection.
  5. I just gave away a pile just like that!
  6. Apologies for the late response...Neophyte Numismatist..yes, it is quite a collection...yep..not yet..some of the coins tug at me sometimes...Ha...., thank you, but the generosity aspect comes from a different BamPaw that never had a collection...that man made it through the depression running shine, selling catfish in the City he caught on trotline, and rabbits he snared and shot, retired from the county in the 70's, spent his last days in a garden that fed us, and made enough to keep him able to do the things he wanted to do...He taught me...Everything has a dollar sign on it...but sometimes the man its most important to doesn't have that dollar....
  7. Here we are again.., just reread all of this post...seriously have to say that I am far more "educated" regarding all of this than I was when first posting this...with a nod and sense of appreciation to those patient enough to guide me in the right directions...but...Pigeonman333rd...I don't have any idea about the questions you've posted in the threads I started, what I do notice is that the pics you post are on the same background, same scale etc., your first being of the Morgan you purchased for your father after working a second job to purchase it. I simply don't understand how someone who has been on this forum for as long as you have, 2018, has to ask the questions you have asked...You know to weigh a coin for authenticity...I didn't know that on my first post. you actually have a scale... I still don't....I call wildly_fanciful_statement...prove me wrong and I will let everyone know I was wrong...But until then...step away with the hustle.
  8. Not a problem, its one that will go into the to niece and nephew pile. They really don't have much interest in these at this point, but perhaps they'll grow into it. When I begin to minimize some of this Hoard I'll probably offer some others that may help fill a spot in a collection rather than just keep or sell. I appreciate the value and history of the coins, but have never been a collector. The proof '62 Jefferson look nice, if you change your mind just let me know.
  9. Someone decide a safe material for such storage and I'll see if its feasible to cut it out on my Co2 laser engraver. The joints on the boxes are similar. Its my new toy, I'm having difficulty justifying its expense to the significant one..this might help...would acrylic be an option?
  10. JPM...this is the only graded nickel in the whole pile...not worth much, but a nice looking coin. You can throw it on the pile for the Grandkids, just let me know where to send it. No tricks, no games, no hustle, just think you'll put in a better place than I will.
  11. You would be better served to start a new thread and share your questions with the others in the forum who have far more experience with them than I do. I simply posted a few Morgans that I have currently. I do believe that they will agree that authenticity can't be determined by a photo, and cost is subjective to depending on the dealership or marketplace purchased from. But, seriously, submit your questions on a new thread and you will be advised far more than I am able to offer.+
  12. Those are nice JPM. Are you focusing just on the graded nickels and proofs? I have 3 and a half tubes of raw nickels I haven't looked through if you're interested in any of them let me know the dates to look for. There's only one graded one, 1938 D MS 65 NGC gold toned.
  13. Appreciate all of the responses. I will create a spreadsheet later, currently I'm gaining an understanding of the coins, etc.
  14. GoldFinger1969..BamPaw clarification... in the introductory to post in the Newbie forum there is a reference to BamPaw, inferring a general reference to a family entity who may or may not have been a family "expert" on numastics. That stuck with me as I have gone through the collection. Hence BamPaw's collection. In my particular situation, I just opened a box and now have stack of St. Gaudians. There are only three lower grade Liberties.
  15. Have a pile of raw Morgans to go through also, maybe a couple hundred...a bunch of graded non-CC's too. A few ungraded Peace's... Hey Kentucky...have some elder kin from Louisville... or Lewyville as pronounced...stayed out that way as a kid, couple of summers or so...if you're looking, will go through he pile and see if somethings there worth trading' for...most of this pile is going to end up with the young un's. Planning on making some pirate chest's, some ol' looking maps, hiding them out around the lake, spend part of the summer on the pontoon and kayaks chasing "pirate treasure".
  16. Thanks JPM...the cool part is the story behind it though...the man who this belonged to was born an orphan, was adopted, grew up dirt poor in Oklahoma and Kansas, worked in the CCC camps during the depression, joined the Military, went through WWII, the Korean War, educated himself after the war, became an engineer developing and testing missile systems...retired from the military, continued as a Civil engineer working on Missile systems, the last being the Patriots....deteriorated and declined in health to what could be closest described as Parkinsons...this collection came from a few dollars saved here and there, not wealth and privilege...along the way he married my grandmother and adopted my father....he was friends with my dads dad..a Marine Raider killed overseas...yeah... the story has no value, but is cooler than the coins...
  17. VKURTB are you inferring that these Russian gold rubles may end up as common world currency?
