  1. Well that is kinda cool. That is a special set. I would think it would be a hard to sell item. Something that would sit in the safe.
  2. It looks like a worn die and then it got some grease stuck in the 1 , 9 and 2 on the date. It is worth keeping it in a flip as a grease filled die coin but not grading. The coin has to much damage for a good grade.
  3. There area lot of coins out there with die cracks, just look at all the Morgan VAM,s and you will see many. I have quit a few nickels and cents with cracks it is fun to save them but I do not think that the crack will change the price of the coin.
  4. Ya a bit shiny but .You know after looking again at the reverse of the coin looks like a MS FS coin ? So It could be a die cap coin that was not out in the wild for very long. Oh and welcome abcd43130... Can you see a the date in the coin.?
  5. I agree with Sandon's reply struck through grease and also someone may have polished it up.
  6. I do want to say that a lot of coins we see on this site were coins used for every day purchases. These coins were not treated as collectables it was just spending money. Placing a coin on a counter it was subject to being dragged to the edge to be able to pick it up and put it away. So sometimes the high areas have lines of scratches that show up on the coins. It may not always be a cleaned coin just a used coin. LoL
  7. I am glad you are having a wonderful time with your Dad. I am sure he is also just as excited that you have takin a interest in coins. I would take your time and inspect the coins slowly learn what dates to keep a eye out for. If you have some war nickels without large mint marks over Monticello than please post them so we can have a look. Feel free to post any coin you have a question on just crop the shot with your phone take a shot of the obverse and reverse keeping the phone about 4 to 6" away and then zoom to get the full coin in the screen. Just like the ones you did above. and start a new thread for each coin.
  8. It is hard to tell with the photo on a angle cant see the 9 and 6 very good but it looks like a small date.
  9. Your coin is a hard one to judge from a photo. The obverse looks close to MS over all nice detail but the reverse looks like it has been rubbed. I think it would grade as cleaned .
  10. Well the coin is worth the cost to grade due to its value being high enough. It is your choice, at the least you would know the grade for sure.
  11. Good looking Liberty Head, I would guess a XF40 to 45 I think there is to much wear on the coin to get a AU grade.
  12. Now if you see a 1965 it is in a envelope and the 1966 and 67 set would look similar to the Whitman, but more like this.
  13. Welcome to the forum edhalbrook. I do a lot of roll hunting so almost every coin in my cent, nickel and quarter books are from circulated coins. Recently I did purchase a nice 2009 BU only because it is a very low mintage count. Trying to find that coin has been a long task. I am also working on my NGC registry set of nickels. That set may take a bit longer with a total of over 300 nickels. LoL
  14. Both Neo and Coinbuf have given you great responses, Being a collector I can only add that each coin has it's own merits and some times as Coinbuf said a FS coin my not be the best quality coin in the batch. I want to add when I fill a book I look for more of a good strike with a minimum amount of bag marks. Some coin books you never see the reverse of the coin .
  15. Well stocking up should not be that hard. I just checked past hammer sales on the 2020 and 2021 EP coins from Philly and San Fran and the highest price was $53 but most were in the $40's range .
  16. Gee Mike, I don't see a lot of what you are describing. The members who you have a singled out have, So many years experience in the numismatic field. There biggest concern is that we as collectors try to give freely our knowledge of coins without misrepresentation. Looking at coin photo's is not the best to judge with but it is all we have to go buy. Looking at the coins you posted I see environmentally staining of some kind on coin 1... Coin 2 looks like it was in the dirt for a long time or soaking in a pool of chlorinated water ...... Coin 3 looks like a bad clad layer with a weak strike that shows bubbling and lines. These are my opinions on the coins posted. I roll hunt all the time and coins like these are in many rolls. If you want to save coins of this sort that is your choice, but I hope you don't sell coins like these as errors to unsuspecting customers.
  17. I, like many collectors wish the ASE's would gain in value more than they have. In my opinion they have been overmarketed and oversold. I have a complete collection all raw hand picked from various dealers and shops all over the east. Only because I could not make a whole set from one dealers stock. I paid just a bit over melt for all of them and they all look MS69/70 . I also have some graded MS70 that I picked up for under $50 only because it was a reasonable deal and if I were to ever sell the set I would have to give the same reasonable deal also. Unless the price of silver were to jump to $30 or $40 a ounce, they are worth what I payed for them, sad to say.
  18. This is what a die crack would look like Bobby. and no I would not send in this coin to be graded. But I put stuff like this in a tin box just for the fun of it.
  19. The mint has a tendency to take things to infinity and beyond. Kinda like ASE, third party labels. I was under the impression that the 2021 coins were going to be a once in a lifetime deal. ( Silly Me ) Here we are in 2023 and they are still being sold ? That is ok I guess because I did not jump on that band wagon in 2021 and every year they make these ( Tokens ) there is a better chance that I will be able to get the previse year coins cheaper than the hype made them.
  20. Yes a small difference in size. It just shows that one coin has worn a bit differently than the other. Or the big coin is from Texas.
