  1. First thing to do is to get a RED BOOK.  Second is to get a Grading guide.  something like PhotoGrade  or some other grading guide.  There are plenty online with pictures.  Be very carful of the areas that are of most important for that coin.  then have fun looking through the lot.  Sort the ones you think are the best and ask a reputable coin dealer.

If there is enough in the way of competitive exhibiting,

Yes there are plenty of exhibits.  the convention center they use "Orange County Convention Center"  is probably a good 1,000 sq ft of exabits.   with the U. S. Mint taking another good 200 and then you have the kids where they can pan for gold.  1500 dealers http://www.funtopics.com/index.html

Oh hahaha  sorry we are from across the river  on the 431 side of the lake you may not want to be around the like of us.  good thing you are bringing your cleaning supply's!

It will be a doable drive from Huntsville, Alabama. I'm as good as there.

AWSOME!!  I just got back for Huntsville... yes it is an easy trip, I used to live there.  My little brother still lives up there.   600 tables of numismatic bliss.  i roam the floor then can usually be found hanging out at Andy Skrabalak's table.  he has some of the finest small change around 1c, 2c, 3c, and 5c around.

Can't wait til they have a coin show here in Southern California after this virus is over.

From what I see on the website the F.U.N. Show is still on!!!!! Can't wait to hit the floor!  Jan 7 - 10  Not so sure how they are going to be able to adhere to all of the social distancing rules??  it should be interesting.

  6. I do like the Sacagawea gold dollar series and i have most of them not thinking they are going to be worth much i have just collected them in an Eagle binder with their 2X2 snap lock holders.  they look really good against the black holder and make a nice presentation. the series isn't very popular but the "golden" dollar has some nice looking coins.

  7. Rdietrick you need to find those coins that grab you.  Just building an MS set or a proof set of coins may not make you happy about your collection.  I for one have collected most of the series since i was a boy in the old blue folders.  I have most circulation strikes back to the late 1800's  I am particularly proud of the fact that i have all of the half dollars back to the 1902. Since I am fond of nickels I have mot of those back to the shield series. So my old Whitman folders provide me more joy then all of my slab Morgan's, Peace, Buffalos, and Indians.  So in essence pick something that you like and start there. Learn about the series and have fun;.
