  1. A partial answer for you as I have a similar situation.  Anything above $300 should go Standard, less than $300 you can send as Economy.  They’ll need to be on separate submissions since all submissions on a form must be submitted to the same Teir. But you can indicate to ship them back together. In the top right corner of the form you can indicate which submissions you want to ship together.

     Hope that helps

FYI...The Todd says he would likely blow several breakers via several unsuccessful attempts at making me a cleaner and so is going to buy me one for my birthday. Sorry for all the fuss about it only to let you all down, but really this is probably best. Lol! I also am getting all the 2019 Sets so I can have all 3 WestPoint Cents. Whoop!

Damn it, Karen!  There go my weekend plans.  Now what am I supposed to do with all this popcorn???

    :roflmao:

Good luck with it!  Can't wait to see some grungies get their details back.

You know how many times I've driven though Hillsboro heading Dallas to Austin?  Way too many.  How many times have I stopped there?  Never.  Checking on google street view they've got a pharmacy claiming to be Texas' oldest right on the square.  Next to a saloon building dated 1876.

There's a few antique stores but lacking restaurants that I could use as good motivation to base a trip on the place.  Maybe one of these days I'll stop to poke around.

I used to go through there almost every weekend.  Picked up some random interesting antiques.  I do recommend it, as long as it's pretty much the same as it was years ago.

  4. Any have or know a kid who's getting into world coins?  I found these in some of my "funny money" (change from when I traveled a lot) and I've got no interest in keeping them.  I figure there's nothing earth shattering in the mix, but they'd be interesting for someone just starting out.

Pay postage (proabably on the order of $2) and pass them along to someone.  Shoot me a PM if you've got a good home for them

Bottom 2 coins are just Canadian pennies ('45 and '48)...I just didn't size the pic to match the other one..

  5. So I went looking for the more pronounced example of this and instead found this and it totally distracted me.... do you see it?  I did give a non-so-subtle hint, so it's not quite as much of a where's waldo moment... but still... the geek in me thinks this is pretty cool, even though I'm sure it has no added value (and there's fair chance I'm imagining it... :insane: )

  6. I've got an 1879 Rev 78 Morgan that I want to submit for grading.  I don't think it's necessary to tag it as a "Variety Plus" since I'm not looking for a particular VAM on it.

So - how to I properly indicate what it is on the submission form so that it's properly labelled when I get it back?  Or do I just submit it as a 1879 and NGC will automatically figure out the Rev 78 attribute?

    Thanks!

Ok. So I have no clue what you guys are talking about but that doesn't cause me to want my guy to make me one any less. He is an auto mechanic and knew all the terms you are all using here and said he had actually looked online about making one for some other purpose and feels he can do it. His helper kid, he says , "he's no mechanic, but he is a computer genius" likely has a conducer or two lying around as that kind of thing is what he's into. He is going to ask him tomorrow. I, on the other hand, wonder why a deep fryer lime for French fries couldn't be used? It has separate little ends in there in the middle of the heating element. He says he doesn't think so, but isn't sure and wonders if it wouldn't get to hot even at its lowest setting. Feel free to tell me I am an insufficiently_thoughtful_person if that is the case, if not how might I transform this deep fryer into an ionic thingy that I already forgot what it's called? See, this is why Tom likes me to come around every so often because I make you all feel so darned smart. Lol!  Anywhooo....here's a photo of my fryer.

I guess my photos are too big to send all together, but this one should give you an idea of what I have. Not like I ever use it because it makes the entire house smell like burnt oil.

I absolutely LOVE where your head's at.  A fryer might be a decent shell to start with.  The heater in that is waaaaaay to big and would take a ton of power to get it to vibrate like it'd need to.  But --- If you can get your hands on a transducer and driver for it, you could use the outside of the fryer, put a smaller thin metal pan in it and stick the transducer on the bottom of the pan.  If you're doing this with duct tape and bailing wire (, all you really need is a thin metal pan (like a bread pan or deep pie pan) that you can hold just by the top lip (the bottom has to be free to vibrate) and the transducer setup stuck on the bottom.  The rest of the stuff is bells and whistles.  The transducer shakes the hell out of the pan (really, really, really fast - that's the tricky bit) and the water / cleaner in the pan does the rest.

It appears to have been cleaned in an ultrasonic generator, which can leave such ripple patterns.

Ultrasonic by itself wouldn't do it.  Not enough energy in any system I've had my hands on  Some sort of acid would etch the copper and the ultrasonic might set up a standing wave and then it got left for a long time?  I've got an ultrasonic cleaner if we want to test the theory.  I like the look.  It'd be fun to take some culls and make them more interesting.

    Hi Hinkle,

Well, what I think you have on your hands after reviewing your photos is a 1972 Philly Cent that someone polished one side of for some strange reason.  People do weird stuff to coins sometimes, as I'm sure you're beginning to see in your hunting.  I don't see anything that indicates an error to me from the photos, unfortunately.

As always, I hope that this helps you some!

I wish I understood it myself, Hinkle.  I think that there are as many reasons that people mess with coins as there are different people in the world.

Ooo, ooo, ooo... I know this one!

If you're collecting them in a blue album, you want them to look pretty... but you only see the obverse so there's no reason to bother with the reverse.

Thanks everyone, that was so close. But I'll keep hunting. All I can say I'm getting closer to that really great find. But good thing I don't get my hopes up, just a really good gutt feeling. I feel like the guy under that dollar hanging from the end of the fishing line and the old man pulling on the other end, saying you almost got it. 🤣🤣Idk if you ever watch the super bowl commercials but that how it feels lol.😂😎

If it was that easy to find the good stuff, it wouldn't be good stuff any more... and it wouldn't be worth hunting for.

So this is the result of the vinegar/salt or the ultrasonic deal I was hoping to find out about? Because I tried vinegar long ago and it made my Copper Lincoln's an unnatural shade of orange and ate right through the Zinc ones.

Those are vinegar (maybe lemon juice)/salt.  The ultrasonic (with distilled water) should be harmless to the coins.  It won't change the finish, just remove any crudation.  If you use some cleaning agent, the ultrasonic will make it quicker / more effective.

So can somebody post a photo of what one of these ultrasonic machines would look like please? This is the 1st I've heard of them and have pretty much given up on experimenting with different chemical agents to clean what could be nice coins if not for a few blemishes, so I have too many Copper Lincoln's in bags waiting to be melted into ammo during the Zombie Apocalypse. I'm sure that maybe I could make one of these machines if I could see the general appearance and workings of one.

They're not really something you can just whip up from stuff  you've got lying around... unless you've got a couple of ultrasonic transducers and drivers in your stash.  :)

The one I've got is an old commercial one.  2 1/2 gallon, 60 watt ultrasonic power, 42kHz frequency.  There are some that look pretty reasonable on Amazon.  Picked this one pretty much at random as an example... no experience with it, not endorsing it, use at your own risk, blah, blah, blah.

And for those of you who like video demos... keep in mind the unit this guy has is a multi-thousand dollar setup, but the principals are the same.

  12. I figured I'd toss one of my up.  I'm guessing it's not (and for some reason I couldn't find the more dramatic example I thought I had), but what the hell...  this was found in a SF mint bag with a bunch of other rolls... There were several with similar defects in similar areas, so it's not just PMD.  I'm guessing this is a case of gunk in the die.  I'm also guessing it doesn't add to the value...

What says the peanut gallery? :)

If you want another potential victim for this experiment, Thompson, you could also try a copper-plated steel Canadian cent.  That would be an interesting one!

Hmmm...  I’ll have to check my “funny money” stash from when I used to travel a lot to see if I lucked upon one of those...

I’ll have to make sure I can get a decent quantity of DI water for multiple coins.  I’ll want to dunk them individually.

    That's a nice looking Saint.

Your coin - your decision, but I would leave it in that holder if it belonged to me.The messed up label will not affect the price.

    2 hours ago, Mohawk said:

I think that holder is worth preserving, honestly.  I agree with Bob, I'd leave it alone.  Even with the messed up hologram, it's still an old school, no line fattie holder, which many collectors seek out and aim to preserve.

And this is why you always, always check the credentials / history of the person offering advice.  Lol

Conder, Bob, and Mohawk are gold!
