  1. [It is still a sensitive subject that is openly discussed behind closed doors by the few surviving war veterans of the period who, despite the losses and devastation, are still unapologetically loyal to the old order no different from those who participated in campaigns waged by Stalin, Pol pot and the empire of Japan.]
  2. I don't believe I have ever seen one of these before. My gut instinct tells me it's something very special. It will be interesting to read the feedback on this.
  3. This comment goes so way beyond the pale it makes Insider's parting shot that no one is entitled to free medical care quite tame by comparison. I wonder where VKurtB stands on this...?
  4. "Values... and symbols of values." That's all there was to it? And the 1943. What about the 1943 copper whatchamacallit? And what does the OP make of all this???
  5. Libraries, Lectures, Laboratories and Museums... Nice combination. That's one unique token with a fascinating history to go along with it!
  6. [My mom, deceased, was born in Yalta, U.S.S.R. When she became an American citizen, the (INS) issued her a certificate indicating her date of birth as February 31, 1921. I have no idea as to the source of the information the government relied on in making that determination but challenge anyone to produce a more bizarre official government document.]
  7. There is no reason why any coin minted in just the last decade should look like this. Whether it is worth ten cents depends on who would accept it.
  8. The face of West 57th Street has changed dramatically. Many of the tallest high rise luxury towers have re-defined the area. The Pontiac showroom, Hoffritz cutlery, Coliseum Books, etc. are all long gone. Even the D.E.A. moved. The real estate pressure was too intense. Coincidentally, Brigandi Coins, Heritage Auction's New York office -- and Stack's are all within a block of each other from E 57th Street and Park Ave. though it is not clear to me whether they have resumed normal operations.
  9. Yes, it seems like the Louisiana State Pen at Angola lies East of the River and its northern most boundary is Mississippi's southwestern most border. The NYC subway's east and westside lines do not go down that far. 😉
  10. INMHO... the basic thrust of all comments made was to insure that all interested parties attend coin shows safely. The emphasis was squarely on the medical. [Editorial comment: I thoroughly enjoyed the antics of the Nevada guy, whose boisterous presence on the Forum lasted all of one week, but apparently offended some members who feel the "chat board" belongs to them. But the Guidelines also prohibit threats and intimidation and the bald ultimatum leveled at a seasoned veteran with a world-class collection, to-wit: "You could be next," goes far beyond rudeness and is inappropriate, uncalled for -- and actionable.] Now, let's get back on track!
  11. I like them both. Interesting contrast. Always liked large cents.
  12. Honestly, I never really thought about it. I still don't know if the 1956 Flying Eagle cent is a pattern, a coin, or both. And I don't know why coins minted for circulation since dinosaurs roamed the earth suddenly became "business" strikes. I've got a lot to learn.
  13. Impressive research by Conder101. I am greatly indebted for bringing this to the attention of all, like me, who did not know. Terms used matter.
  14. [Correction: Our illustrious Conder101 is correct. I was, in fact, confusing the Susan B. Anthony with the Sacagawea one-dollar coin. It was the former that was universally disliked by vendors and consumers owing to its close similarity to the quarter-dollar in size and color.]
  15. True, but it beats smoking, drinking and drugging. At least you have something to show for your investment in time and effort in the end.
  16. Norilsk-Talnakh [nickel, cobalt, palladium, platinum, copper and coal] mining-mettalurgical complex, largest in world, built by GULAG prisoners. Northernmost city in world and one of its worst polluters.
  17. [Stick to the east side. The 4, 5 and 6 are more reliable.] 😉
  18. Welcome back to the Forum. You will not remember me; I am a relative newcomer. If you are in need of a '37 Merc (coin not car!) I would be happy to send you one free of charge. It is the only one I have kept. It is in roughly the same condition as your '21D and in need of a new home as I no longer collect U.S. coins. Welcome back home!
  19. Recently encapsulated! D-day survivor! San Francisco! Wow! Major Contender here!
  20. Re: 1913S Buffalo If that's a partial doubling of just the top of the 3 in 1913, here's the back-story... after-after-shock from the great earthquake of '06. Sound plausible? This is one spectacular gem with a touch of desirable amber toning.
  21. Yes, it does, and I can only hope it has for our fellow members, particularly those who are impatient, skeptical, uninformed and/or misinformed. Like you, I live in a less than ideal environment. My wife and I have been wearing masks from the outset and shall continue to wear masks after we are vaccinated. To my knowledledge you are the first member to address this topic at length and from a personal viewpoint. Thank you for sharing your experience. I do hope you recover and feel better soon. [Special note of appreciation to the OP for his forbearance.]
  22. Just received a fresh batch of Submission Forms, the last numbered 6104468. That ought to give you an idea of the brisk pace of operations.
