  1. Hello, This 1930 capped bust half dollar has stars that have an outstretched "arm" all around the obverse of the coin. Is this a recognized variant or is it just a normal error that is ignored? I say ignored because I have seen it a couple of times and on one of them, it was in a PGCS holder with no mention of this aspect of the coin...just the size of the 0. Thank you ahead of time for the insights.
  2. I should have mentioned that I don't have it on hand to take pictures...I sent it for conservation. I was just wondering if anyone heard of any of these particular pennies having a few or a run of thin planchets...?? I will take pics when the coin gets back.
  3. I have a 1859 Canadian penny that is significantly thinner than my other 1859's. I figured it was cast on a different planchet than the others. I've looked for information on a thin planchet version of this coin but I am unable to find record of it. When I say it is thinner, I know it is not from wear. Some of the other 1859 pennies I have that are thicker, are more worn out than this one is. Any ideas on if there are thin planchet versions of this coin? Other than the thin planchet it is a 1859 penny - Narrow 9 version
  4. I noticed that the date size on my 1845 One Cent is noticeably different than the date sizes on my other one cent coins. I have included pics of the 1845 which seems small and a 1847 that seems normal. Sorry, I didn't have another 1845 to compare it to but I figured the 2 years difference was not too bad. I cannot find any info on a variety for a small date for this coin. Maybe I am not looking hard enough or maybe I need the collective mind of you all out there. What do you think?
  5. Thank you sdawnmiller an actual constructive inquiry.. I weighed it myself with other coins for comparison. 5 copper pennies from different years (1947, 1975, 1977 & 1981) all were the same weight - 3.1 grams 3 1943 steel pennies had 3 different weights (2.6, 2.7 & 2.8 grams) The coin in question had the weight of 3.1 grams. To do the SG test I need to get a scale that will measure to hundredths of a gram. I will post the results when I get the scale and do the tests.
  6. That's why I went to get it weighed...did you notice in the post you quoted that the jeweler that I took it to tested it and determined it not to be plated? If it is not plated how can it be one like you made? Did you make some that were not plated? If so, I would like to hear about it...maybe it is similar to mine.
  7. I have a 1975 steel/silver colored that I have been holding onto for quite some time and never thought that the memorial steps might show plating. After reading the quoted post, I went right away to take a good look at it and it looks like the steps are still there. So I was going to post the question/pics here but I decided to go get it weighed as mentioned in an earlier post. I went to a jeweler and asked him to weigh my coin for me. He took one look at it and refused to take it out of the sleeve I have it in or weigh it. He said to not take it out of the sleeve and not to let anyone touch it. He said if it was real it might be worth something and to send it to NGC. I told him I had planned on it but did not want to waste my time in case it was plated or a high school experiment or something. He asked for it back and put it in a machine that he had there and after a moment he declared it NOT plated and that it was most likely zinc. I cannot find any info on this coin other than it might be plated (it isn't) and then someone mentioned on a post somewhere that it may have been an experiment with different materials by a mint and should have never left the mint. So my question is, I am getting on the side of sending it for grading but I wanted to get an opinion from those smarter than me here...send it in or what the heck is this thing? Thank you in advance for advice.
