In the absence of specific knowledge, imagination fills in the blanks.

As well as unfounded optimism and motive.

It’s “Star Trek” thinking. “If I can imagine something, it’s true.” Ever notice how frequently stars pass by Star Trek windows? It’s insane, and impossible. Even traveling at the speed of light, a star might pass by every year or so, probably far longer.

According to my handy dandy Star Trek warp speed calculator, at warp 7.15 you can travel one light-year in 24hrs. So, one a day? I have a feeling @GoldFinger1969 may have something to say about this. ;)

The British 2023 definitive coin set is here! Flora and fauna of Britain on one side and “Chucky the Turd” on the other.

Look better than the CGI renderings in the other post. The animals are a little too cartoonish looking for me to really like the designs but much better than I was led to believe.

    Hi all,

    Just wanted to share.

All of my research will be going to the ANA at some time in the future.

I'm will be available to all collectors who are interested in the series. That's better than a book, right. It's free.

I'd rather have the book myself. Regardless, it's fantastic that you've made arrangements so that your research can be accessed by all collectors free of charge. :golfclap:

I've greatly enjoyed your posts on U.S. commemoratives over the last handful of years.

SENT 10 SETS OF REVERSE PROOF MORGAN PEACE SILVER DOLLARS, EXPECTING THEM TO GRADE LIKE THE ONES GRADED EARLIER. KNOW THIS IS NOT A EXACT SCIENCE BUT PERCENTAGES LOOKED LIKE 40 TO 1 FOR GRADING 70 FOR PEACE DOLLARS. THEY ARE RETURNING NOW AND NONE OF PEACE DOLLARS GRADED 70 WHAT ARE THE ODDS

I'm assuming that you bought these direct from the mint when they were first released then sent them in the OGP for grading and if that's the case I am surprised by the results, they speak to the quality of product from the U.S. mint more than anything. Pick a similar NCLT piece from any world mint and I expect the results would be dramatically different.

If other members feel the same, I will gladly leave. For a few years being here i learned alot. There's quite a few members that constantly show's off there finds. I might be in left field somewhere but I pick up eventually. Now I'm sorta catching on , all the sudden I'm being treated like a few other's that the members had a problem with. I'm actually working hard at this. I really pray and hope I'm not a problem. I apologize, thought this was a forum were you can be yourself and learn by asking anything about coin related topics. I must not meet your standards. Of course people do what they please with there coins, who don't. I'm confused

Post as much as you like @Hinkle, I don't think anyone here has any issue with your posts. Keep'em coming bud.

Doesn't look like a RPM to me.

No mater Rykel it will not make it worth more, both of the possibility's we discussed do not increase the value of the coin. If you send it in, you will get the same answer you got here only that they will pick one or the other because they are going to charge you for that answer.

I think they charge $10 if they agree to look at it? This coin is worth no where near that but the OP may get a more definitive answer if they decide to look into CONECA. Heck, they might shoot him back the same responses that were given here for free on their forum. Personally I would recommend that the OP stop spending time looking for errors or the unusual, chuck this in the ol' change jar and start looking for quality. Better yet, define their collecting goals or area/s of interest, study, then start looking for pieces.

Awesome information I have so much to learn I had no idea about different types of presses used in different years. I really do want to know how this error was caused exactly and what it is. I do believe it is worth it to send out to be looked at by an expert. Would you be able to recommend where I should send it to?

CONECA might take a look at it. I think you have to post some pictures on the forum first before they'll agree to examining the coin.

You are making my eyes hurt! I checked a 1999 1/20 and it had the same marks.

Interesting, it's a little odd that some pieces will show these tool marks and others don't. Strange that low mintage pieces would have such variance. I was a bit thrown off with the tool marks on the two pieces in the OP as they didn't make sense to me as a lifelong tradesman, machine builder and woodworker. I don't know the intricacies of engraving but a tool mark that is continuous over devices and fields, and that did not follow the contours of the design made no sense to me, especially if you gave a rat's arse about the final product. Sometimes I just need to talk things out with others for it to sink in. Good ol' Pobjoy,

I'll be looking for a good book on engraving and die making next, just picked up the Maklouf biography and I think that will be my next read.

  9. I went back over my collection of these and I found another example of that design used for the 1986 circulation strikes, the other examples posted have been designated proofs, not that I agree with that, I don't, and I hadn't looked at the BU pieces. I think the '85's are good just sloppy workmanship.

The 2014 looks ok, but the other has a goofy portrait and noticeably inferior detail.

Haven't ruled out counterfeit. The tool marks on the 2014 are more inline with the design details, where the tool marks on the 1985 go across details and don't flow with the design nearly as much. I've seen this same design on another 1985 1/10 angel but with ANA privy mark, that one didn't seem to have tooling marks but that's based on an image, and not a very good one. I thought that one was counterfeit until I saw these.

...i think u r correct, appears to be in die finishing n lack of qc....

They probably didn't care as these are just bullion pieces but still I'm a little surprised by this level of ineptitude, even for Pobjoy. I've handled many of these and no others have shown this lack of quality and finish. The first two pieces are from 1985 and are from an unlisted die variety, the third is from 2014. I may need to borrow a pallet.

  12. There are what appear to be die gouges all over these two pieces, it's almost like someone was tracing or laying out the design on the coin. I'm wondering if anyone has seen something similar on other coins and if it is indicative of something like an unfinished die, graffiti, counterfeit, etc.? Gouges are noticeable on the Angel's face, right wing, left torso, waist, left leg, Dragon's left wing, around the inner portion of the chain, etc... The two pieces below were presumably produced from the same die.
