My newps are mostly Barbers [ see the Mega Thread with 304,000 + Hits ]

I have been picking up 1917 + 1921 SLQ's for my Parents Birth Year sets ...

    here's the newest one ... 1917-S Ty 1 - PCGS 58 FH { Dad's Birthyear }

The 1921 Quarter { image above } is much nicer in hand !! It arrived today !

  2. Thanks for the Kudos guys !

I thought it was a pretty decent AU 58.

As soon as I get it, it goes to CAC.

My Dad was born in 1917 and when I sold

my last set of SLQ's, I neglected to pull the

    coins from the years 1917 & 1921. { My Bad... :makepoint: }

So... to make it up and to keep things even Stephen ...

    here's a decent 1917-D Ty 1 that I just found on eBay...

Years ago... for my Dad's 75th birthday - I gave him a raw 1917 Mint Set

which included a Ty 1 - SLQ - from Phila. I recently had it graded and

it came back in a non FH - AU 58 holder. No images yet.

  3. The other day, I picked up a Type One 1892 Quarter in Proof 65+.

This coin started out { as far as I can tell } as a MS 65 and was

sent back to PCGS for regrade. It received a new serial number

    as well as a "+" { Plus Grade = MS 65+ }..

This coin was sold at a Heritage Auction twice, once as a 65 and

a year or so later as a 65+.I found the coin on Great Collections

this past weekend. The coin now has a Green Bean - CAC - sticker.

The mintage for an 1892 Proof Quarter was 1,245. It is estimated that the

Type One variety had a production of 1/10 of the original mintage.

    Finding it made my day...

  4. I received an email from David Kahn Rare Coins - and spotted a beautiful

Quarter - in AU 58 - which I already owned in the same grade - but while

I was already looking , I looked at other series I collect. I found this V Nickel

which seems very nice.... I should have it by next weekend.

  5. JP.....

I hear you !! I have been skeptical as well with many lower MS grades....

but I take my chances hoping for a lustrous coin without ten thousand tics.

I think you did very well. Buying from HA.com gives you the opportunity to

increase the size of the image without loosing any details. Congratulations,

    you did very well, IMHO.

I have been looking for a few Quarters, myself. Basically, upgrades. My 1907-S

slot has two coins - a nice VF 25 ( a decent hole filler ) and an MS details - "92"

cleaned - which I bought raw, off of a friend at a local coin show before Christmas.

It has a MS 64+ Reverse, but the OBV was messed with. Finding an AU 58 of

that date is nearly impossible and if you do find one for sale, the seller is asking

a small fortune for it. I sold my old AU 58 four years ago at auction and got

much more for it than I ever expected.

One of the coins I kick myself for ever selling.

I spotted a nice looking upgrade for the VF 25 - from my friend where I located

the MS details one.... It's "just an XF 45" .... But as close to AU 50+ as I'll ever find !!

  6. The other night we had a wind storm and heavy rains. It was loud enough to wake me.

At 3:30 AM, I decided to get dressed - and wait the storm out. In case of an emergency,

I was all ready to leave. My two big brave Dobermans slept thru the whole event. lol.

I put on a pot of Tea, and started playing on eBay. I was fortunate enough to locate

nice mid MS grades of two dates I was missing ( lots of 65 & 66's around if I had that

kind of money ) ..... Anyhow, I picked up a 1904 V Nickel in PCGS 64 from Stateline

Rare Coins ( I know one of their employees )

    image_zpsifqlekix.jpeg

    image_zps7s7j95p1.jpeg

and another nice 1907 V Nickel in PCGS 63.

    image_zpsknwv3lac.jpeg

While I was up and now wide awake because of the Tea, I started looking at Halves. One

stood out as it was fairly priced and plus, I know the seller ( who I have found to be beyond

reproach - Vic Bozarth ) .... I have decided to work as many AU 53's into my set as possible

and this 1897 in AU 53 fit the bill perfectly.
