October 16th.... 2016....
Have not posted an image since October 4th.
....yet still there have been an average of 215
hits per day on this thread without so much as
a hello or better yet a comment or an image being
posted.
Be that as it may, I still try and keep this Thread alive
as I assume there are some who enjoy looking at my
Barbers - but have nothing to say - well sooner or later,
I'll not be posting anymore and there seems to be no one
to continue promoting Barber Coinage.
Until that day arrives, here's an addition to my AU 58 set
of Liberty Head Nickels .... One down, two to go:

Bought raw, just graded pcgs 65
I love that !!

I won't get into the case of the misidentified 1917 Buffalo ...
I have always held out hope of someday finding one, as my
Dad was born in 1917.
Needless to say, I have my fair share of this date....normal strikes
and Broadstrikes and O/C's.
However, this Thread is set up for newps. I picked up two Quarters
I wanted for my Birthyear Date Set - 1947 - Denver and San Francisco:
Both from GC - PCGS's - MS 66's - and, now...Off to the Bean Factory !!
{ Great...I never copied the images...later... }
-
I only have a couple of Large Cents... this 1839 Booby Head and
a 1847 [ whose images are lost in my lap top somewhere ! ]
-
Received my grade this morning ATS:
Very pleased with the result ....Care to guess the grade ?
Here is the True View Image:

Just upgraded this date in my Quarter Collection.
I have a nice enough AU 53 - but I've been hunting
down AU 58's....
My Newp:
-
Thanks for posting something I would have lusted over myself...
Beautiful coin... I've fallen for toned Liberty Nickels.... I really love them.
{ Great, something else I "have to collect"... }
My recently acquired 1911 - looks nothing like yours...
Fairly recent purchase off eBay - a "lowly MS 63", but...BIG but here:
CAC gave it a Gold Sticker !!
-
New regrades: { I submitted for a friend }
-
Yes, the 1899 is something else....
It'll look great with one of my favorite Halves...
.....and Quarters.....
,
...to say nothing of the Dimes
-
I am actively working on the Nickel collection... I have a
decent head start on the Proofs - missing many - but love
what I have so far...
The AU-58 collection is almost complete [ missing an 1889
but I have that date in abundance - also a 58 that is 20% O/C ]
I just picked up another 1889 - but a duplicate - this time its a 64
Last month, I located a splendid 1892 in Proof - and I found this MS 64 to
put beside it ...
Here's a date I have searched for - which seems like forever -
I have never seen its equal in hand ...
Another new duplicate - but this 64 puts the other 64 { CAC } to shame !
Last but far from least - I have been looking for a toned 1912 that
didn't break the bank...Its only a 63 ... but its got the look....
These came out of last night's Heritage Auction. I know, I really blew the old
budget on these - but - when would I ever see any as nice again ?
-
One of the first raw coins I have bought in some time....
-
Okay - lets shake this up a bit...
-
This was recently CAC'd...

Picked up two AU 58 Dimes for the Everyman Set:

JOM:
When Mark Brown first posted the 1901 NGC 58 which he had won at auction
on Heritage a few years ago, he decided to list it on the BST across the street.
My immediate reaction was "yuck" as I hated the circular stain on the REV . I asked
him if he'd send me the coin so I could get it recognized as possibly an unknown
REV die of the 1901-S. It appeared to me as though the die was effaced to remove
the S from the Die.
The features my iPad has, it allows me to expand the images
to the size of a saucer. Once I expanded the REV of the coin, the shape of an "S"
appeared as plain as day. I had the coin imaged by my friend, Todd Pollock at
a national show. I think he captured the "phantom S" quite well.
Armed with the images and the coin, I made an appointment with my friends at NGC -
John Scuck and David Lange who I knew from the ANA Summer Seminars. I was
ushered into a conference room off of the NGC lobby and the coin was taken into
their grading office where they looked at the coin under a stereo microscope.
It seems that some how a series of infantesimal scratches were under the eagle's
central tail feathers - forming what appeared to be the exact shape of an "S" complete
with top serif. The key word here is "appeared" .
David Lange pointed out - which I believed to be true before I jumped to any conclusions -
that the center Mint Mark was used on Barber Quarters for only one year, 1892.
I advised Mark Brown of the findings and asked him what he wanted me to do with the
coin: send it back to him, or pay him for the coin - he elected to sell it to me for what
he had in it. So, it sits next to nice MS Phila and AU 58 New Orleans mint coins. I have
it labeled on the NGC holder " Phantom S" ....it stands out as it's the the only NGC
graded coin I own - in my Eagle Brand Certified Coin Album.
As far as buying any more MS coins for the Quarter set, I'm not going down that road again.
I was decimated on my last auction selling mid grade Barber Quarters and Halves. I'll stick
to AU 58's, thank you very much. I have found the only 1901-S Quarter in AU 55 that I want;
however, it's buried in a collection where the owner has my old 01-S,,also an AU 55 - but
He will not part with the 01-S in his first set. It's far nicer than the only 01-S in PCGS 58.
If it gets regraded, it's sure to get a 58+ ( IMHO ).
I'm not concerned about locating the other Top Three Keys. My initial feelings on starting
this set was that there wouldn't be any of the three Keys in the set. I actually didn't think I
would ever find a 1909-O in AU 58 that I would find acceptable.
Out of the blue, a gentleman which I had been buying and selling Qurters to over the
past few years, approached me asking if I were interested in his 09-O I. PCGS 58.
Of course I said yes, as I had a decent circulated example but it was the ugly duckling in the set.
The new AU 58, is hands down, the nicest of the three AU 58's at PCGS.
I know, I owned one of the others when it was a 55 with a gold CAC.
My new 09-O is the finest AU available.
The other semi keys took a great deal of time and of course, money.
But I am very pleased with the end results. I need to upgrade a coin
or two, but no matter. Eventually I'll have the entire set in AU 58 -
SANS the three Keys.
Ok... That's my story, and I'm sticking with it.

Mr. Brown...
Recognize this ??
The coin that almost gave us both a heart attack !!

While surfing thru eBay this afternoon, I ran across an AU 58
V Nickel I needed for my Circulated Set ... which I bought from
Ben Todd of Sarasota Rare Coins. { If anyone has not dealt with Ben,
they should...he's a real nice guy and a collector at heart.]
With this addition - it leaves me with just three missing coins in 58
to complete my Circulated Set - one of which [ a 1901 ] I cracked
out of an ICG 58 holder and submitted ATS - which I might see by
Thanksgiving !!
337,194 Hits on this thread - 163 more than there were yesterday.
Come on !! Post some coins you 163 lookers on !!

That 1896 S is extremely nice for the grade.
Thanks - but tell that to CAC - they did not Pass it.

My friend Valente151 visited me over Memorial Day weekend -
immediately after he graduated from college - and before he
was applying to Med School. Knowing full well acceptance into
Med School is a real shoot he is know going thru a second
round of application essays.
He posted one of my coins for me because I couldn't locate the
original seller's images ... so - without further ado - here is an
upgrade from a PC55CAC to a PC58 [non CAC ]

I have been looking for an 1893 Nickel in AU 58 [ a true 58 !! ] for
years.... I have an AU that my Grandfather pulled out of change in
the 1940's - but when I submitted it ATS - it was Body Bagged as
Altered Surfaces. Neither my Grandfather, Dad nor I ever touched
this coin other than placing it in an old Whitman Bookshelf Album.
Found the images...attached below:
Well... last night I was looking at Heritage's weekly auction [ which
I rarely look at ] and lo and behold...
....okay ... its coded "94" ....what's that mean ?!

While I'm at it...this image was adjacient to the others...

NJF- That's one of the nicest Two Cent Pieces I have ever seen.
Looks like a very high end Proof - and the color is flat out beautiful.
I normally shy away from Copper - but - I had to comment how much
I really like this coin. Thanks for sharing it !!

I've been trying to add AU 58's - and here's one of the nicest AU 58's
1909-S's I have seen :
