Yes, and of course Breen is subject to a good many, umm, more "personal" criticisms. Don't research it if you don't have a strong stomach. Suffice it to say that by 2019 societal standards, Breen was about as low as human beings get.

If you like it and you want to keep it, and I don't want to discourage you either way, forget having it graded. Just put it in a nice new stapled 2x2 and start your own "mishandled coin" file box. But that is what it is, a mishandled coin, not a mint error. In the annals of ANA competitive exhibiting, one exhibit of ONLY damaged coins DID win a Best in Show one year. It was extensive and well researched as to causes.

    Aimee,
I think you deserve to know why you don't see these very often, even though they are fairly recent, and so many were made. They have been heavily "hoarded", or "set aside" by nearly every
coin person in the whole country. Roll after roll after roll, simply sitting in boxes somewhere in coin collectors' "stuff".

There! You said it EXACTLY! That, right there is what spikes my blood pressure about 30 points. It makes me so angry I could spit, yet it is ALL OVER THE PLACE in the coin hobby.

Do keep in mind the market CONDITIONS in January 2011 when I "picked" that 1939 nickel. Most guys at auctions were snapping up ANYTHING made of silver at really sick high prices then. If it weren't either silver or gold, most guys couldn't have cared less. That reveals one of my key strategies - collect what is NOT presently "HOT"! Then wait.

Cool! I managed to grab at auction (local, Reading, PA, January 2011) a 1939 Reverse of '38 in MS66FS graded by some other company, PCG_ something.  I metaphorically stole it. I was the only guy in the room who had an idea it was pretty special.

    Aimee,
Ike dollars are the ULTIMATE example where condition is absolutely EVERYTHING. Almost all circulated ones (ones that SHOW circulation) are considered nearly junk. I remember CARRYING these puppies to SPEND!!! But when you encounter a truly pristine example, they can bring "stupid money" in some cases. It's a really interesting segment of the market and hobby.

I am NOT an expert on the FS designation, BUT from what I've read, that ding on the steps between the C and E is enough.

I'll make you a deal, Karen. SOMETIME in the next year or two, we should cross paths in "meatspace". The West Virginia "panhandle" is a quick drive for me. Via Charleston is one route I take to northern Alabama. Maybe a Pittsburgh thing, maybe a Gettysburg thing, whatever. In fact, I'll make it an open offer to everyone here. Shipping is a pain in the butt for me, and I have a "mission" to encourage live face-to-face numismatics whenever I can. I have always thought of the Internet as a tool to get to personal face-to-face interaction, and NOT a tool to AVOID it. If anyone wants this box of (purported, I don't actually know) error cents, and we can find a way to cross paths (and I DO get around!), it's yours. Gratis. It needs to go to somebody who, unlike me, will appreciate them. I DO appreciate the WORK that somebody put into them. They really are lavishly documented on the 2x2's.

In my opinion, no, not really. The only exception I can think of is to illustrate some random feature for a book or a talk you're giving. In "normal" numismatics, no.

Oh wait, there IS one reason: if you're looking for itty bitty tiny varieties that no one much even cares very much about, then yes.
