Two things: 1) Of course I’ve heard of gradeflation. I thought it was obvious that was what I was complaining about. No, it’s not okay with me, Skip. 2) I am aware you are a tough technical grader, as I am. That’s one reason I personally like your style. I have not been unpleasantly surprised by any coin’s grade in over three years now, anywhere. I am a tough bugger and I get frequent pleasant surprises.

I’ve seen a lot of things in my 57 years in coins, but I’ve never seen an MS quarter with nearly worn smooth edges. One of those can’t be true.

I brought it to him because I wanted to show him older ICG grades and 2017 vintage NGC grades matched (again - this was my fifth time doing this).

What I learned is grade inflation is alive and well, at least at ICG.

@Insider, I have confidence in you, just not in your current firm as presently constituted. At the 2016 winter FUN show, I carried an ICG slabbed 1916-D Walker in MS63, with instructions to get it in an NGC slab. I cracked it and left the gasket around it and put it in a 2.5x2.5 Saflip. At show grading. I got it the next day. MS63 again. Then I showed it to your people, maybe even YOU. They said it was at least a 64 and maybe a 64+. Where are the ethics, sir? Your firm already had graded it a 63 when submitted raw, but then try to “up sell” me another 1 to 1+ grades. Sorry, your firm is dead to me. And personally I like you.

When it was Mr. Taylor’s firm, I used it a lot.

Ten. Cents. That's all it will ever be worth. It is an intentionally damaged coin. Such things are without numismatic value.

Yes, NGC. only accepts actual in-slab crossovers from PCGS. People who send in any other service are in effect submitting raw coins. When I send an ICG coin to NGC, I do crack it out, but I sometimes keep it in the readily identifiable ICG translucent insert. That way they know they’re likely reviewing an ICG coin.

Just kidding. I decided to try out being a millennial for a few minutes. I could literally feel my brain dissolving into mush.
But anyway, here is why we can be seen as negative: It’s because the only thing worse than the state of public education these days is the state of Numismatic education among new collectors. Sorry, Ken Potter, but you cannot strike it rich with pocket change. It’s a lie. There are literally hundreds of thousands more scam artists in numismatics than there are real rarities. They are called rarities for a reason. They don’t just appear in pocket change.

The 12 Federal Reserve Branch Banks are responsible for routing coinage into the banking system for their member banks. Other banks, such as state-chartered banks, use a private jobber for this. But when demand for coins is high, the Mint produces more. When demand for coins is low, such as in 2009, fewer are made. The 12 Federal Reserve Banks make those orders. Of course, getting four different cents produced, and six different quarters, also put the brakes on creating nickels and dimes in 2009. Kind of a double whammy. The Federal Reserve Banks do not get much of a federal appropriation, because they are actually cash-flow positive. The Federal Reserve HQ in Washington does get a small appropriation and only those staffers working there are even federal employees. It's really near the Vietnam memorial, on the north side of the Mall.

The six most eastern FRB's order from Philadelphia, and the rest from Denver. However, in case of shortages, occasionally the two mints cross-ship. I have only once found brand new current year coins in a cash register from Denver where I live.

The Mint has been studying this, with emphasis on the nickel, since the copper price spike in 2011. There has been created a brand new heretofore unknown alloy of stainless steel that is ready to go should the Congress make the decision. Most of the work has been done by Carpenter Technologies of Reading, Pennsylvania. I have held some of the test strikes. Very nice work.

That is not true. I have been looking for a 1993D Roosevelt dime with a Special Matte Finish. None have ever been found, but I hope to be the first, and I intend to sell it for a huge profit - after posting it on here and talking incessantly about it, of course. It has been my lifelong dream to be the discoverer of this coin.

Oh, wait - someone beat me to it.

    Never mind.
