You just never know when it will happen!
Here is another example of fishing for one and finding another instead. I bid on two Mint sets on Ebay a few weeks back and really was just interested in the 1981 Mint Set for the SBA's. The other set was a 1987. I went okay.....some more change for the bank later... I was disappointed with the 1981 set and I glanced at the 1987 and you just know when you find a six full step nickel and having it be a MS67 is a miracle. The observe does have a Proof Like appearance as well but the reverse falls short of it.

Just what does Early Releases label offer??
Let me first state that I am not against the "Early Releases" label but I do not understand why we need it at all.
I could see it when it was just the Silver Eagles and how some collectors want just that label or collect every label that exists.
So... as a collector...do we collect the coin or the grading company or the label? Does anyone really care if they get an Early Release nickel or Presidential dollar when there is no extra points given to those.
For me, I'd much rather have all my collection the same. I see no value of Early Releases especially when the previous coins were just regular labels. I know NGC charges more for a few extra letters on the label. That makes sense when they offered First Day Issue because of the tight deadline to submit and there are more points offered as well. But...all in all.. doesn't matter if the coin has the label Early Releases or First Day Issue, most of the coins were all minted about the same time.
I still buy the coin not the label type as long as its from NGC. In hundred years, will anyone really care or will it matter if it was Early Releases?

Registry Awards have lost their luster!
Again, This may come across as mean and a poor sport but changes are needed for the registry awards.
Cancer has spread across many registry sets and doesn't seem to have any cure and is not slowing down. LLC's have taken over many modern sets buying up all high grade coins overpaying many times what the coins would be worth in the future all for a small piece of paper saying...I'm am number 1 again... but it also is saying "I have unlimited resources with no liability or concern."
This is NOT what the intent is with registry awards that is only about the $$$. It is a hobby and a lot of us spend the time and effort find those raw coins and grading them ourselves and then having them graded. There is pride and joy for that reward. It is great having a number one set when there is effort on our part.
All major league sport have adopted a even playing field so all teams have an equal advantage so no one team can acquire all the best players with an unlimited budget. This causes more competition and attention and hope for all the teams.
I personally have stopped trying to chase any registry set that has a "LLC" in that set. There will be no competition for those sets because of the unfair advantage. Isn't the registry for everyone not just the rich or hide under the corporation laws that protect them. I see a real decrease in modern sets since only a select few can chase the number one set. I still don't understand if someone has unlimited wealthy, why on earth bother with modern coins at all. Go play with the big boys on gold and high end Morgan dollars and older more scarce coinage.
I propose that either all registry awards be stopped until this "cancer" can be controlled and can be more open for everyone whether you have wealth or not. Or limit the number of awards that can be offered so more members have a better chance to increase competition again.
All we ask is that this society remain fair for everyone. Lets not reward the "LLC's" anymore.

Separate sets now for Mint Strike, FDI, SMS and more.
NGC now has split up the Presidential dollar sets to allow more members to obtain a Number 1 set.
    Thanks NGC!!!
    May God Bless everyone

Only 4 exists in the NGC census!!
Once is a great while you find a coine worth grading while looking for something else. I usually buy 1981 mint sets on Ebay now and again looking for that MS67 SBA. I have been lucky before so I am still hopeful it will happen again.
This 1981 D Jefferson Nickel Business Strike MS66 NGC 5FS coin has lots of luster and a great strike, hard to find from the 70's and 80's. I usually don't collect business strike nickles but I could not just toss it away either.
I was able to find three 2011 dollar MS68's too. My second submission arrived at NGC today!
Happy St Patty's DAY though I am mostly Norwegian and am still waiting for Happy Norwegian Day...
    Happy hunting!

Could this be the end of FDI Presidential dollars?

Satin finish to be discontinued; brilliant finish reinstatedFrom the US Mint web site:WASHINGTON - The United States Mint today announced that it is discontinuing the satin finish on numismatic uncirculated coins produced for the United States Mint Uncirculated Coin Set? and other products. Instead, beginning in 2011, uncirculated-quality coins will feature a brilliant finish. The United States Mint began using the satin finish for its uncirculated coins in 2005 to be consistent with other products in its portfolio, such as commemorative coins. The satin finish, however, highlights surface marks that inherently result from the coin-handling systems. Although the United States Mint modified the process to improve the coin appearance, there is no cost-effective way to completely eliminate the coin-on-coin contact that causes surface nicks. As a result, the United States Mint will revert back to the brilliant finish used on uncirculated coins prior to 2005. This change will result in more aesthetically pleasing coins with a finish that does not highlight surface flaws. It will only be featured on uncirculated-quality one-cent, 5-cent, dime, quarter-dollar, half-dollar and dollar coins

Slow and Steady Wins the Race!
I have had many blessings finding the Business Strikes for the Presidential Dollars set. It took me awhile to be patient and not grab the first ones offered on Ebay and over pay for them. You may not find yourself on the top of your registry set when the awards are given out in a few days but in the end, if you are patient enough, the price will fall once everyone else grabs theirs early on but you have saved some money and have no remorse. Coins with the same grade are worth the same points and money regardless when you obtain them. So smile and relax, though you didn't get that number one spot, you know that most overpaid for that small piece of paper that in hundred years no one will care or know who they were competing against. Let those "LLC"s using someone else's money or have no personal risk on those coins that will never be worth what was paid, waste their money on their egos.
Take pride in your hobby and that you kept your integrity and stayed focus on what is really important.
    Happy Thanksgiving to ALL!

    Mutiple errors
Lately the US Mint has created some very interesting errors with their Sacagawea Business Strike Dollars.
This one has a missing eye, parts of the mouth and face are missing. A Hugh Die Break too. I don't collect error coins but I know other collectos love them.
Amazing when you are looking at how the strike is on the coin and then your eye catches that she is missing hers!

There is an error on the reverse but what kind is it?
I had a couple fo these with errors graded and both came back as MS67 from NGC. I did not indicate they were error coins though. Now I know the grade, I need some advice from all you experts. Is this a gradeable error by NGC and what type is it?

Could this be the key date/President for the series???
With the NGC census updated today, I am quite surprised with the low population that was graded for this president. Has some dealers stopped grading the presidents already? Has the collector walked away from the series this soon? I believe it is just a lull before Lincoln dollar is released then watch everyone's brother hop on board if they never collect another president.
I will make my prediction now and say that the Buchanan dollar will be the key to this series!
I hope everyone has a great Labor Day!!

    WOW....one MS68!!
After 2 boxes of Buchanan "D" dollars, I was only able to submit eight "D"s. I felt I had one MS67. Out of 12 rolls of "P" dollars, I submitted eight of these as well. I felt I had a good chance of three MS67.
I was right on both counts.
    one Buchanan D MS67 FDI
    three Buchanan P MS67 FDI
    but...wait for it....I found my first "P" MS68 FDI.....YES!
I want to thank Josh for his help with the "P" rolls.
Good luck to everyone that collects the Presidents.

What would you call this error?
I just received two $250 boxes of SAC 2010 dollars. I have only gone through a few rolls and already found 6 of these error coins on the reverse. May not be worth much but sure is fun when you find something new!

    1000 hit milestone
Still number 1....for now. I know its more important where you rank at beginning of the year. For now...I am thankful I least held that position for awhile. With that being said, I know I will have the best NGC graded presidents in the registry. Some still have made no effort to fill the slots with any NGC. I have said before....any slot filled with PCGS graded coins especially when there are NGC coins available. I have a different set with just FDI PCGS but after 2008, I quit. I found their coins overgraded with more blemishes, stains or larger nicks. All PCGS coins should be allowed in the sets however with lesser point value unless there was a way NGC could verify they are indeed graded equally. I also know some totally disagree with me but PCGS still doesn't allow NGC in their registry sets and that is wrong!
Anyways...I hit the 1000 hit milestone and love the competion from those that try to use NGC coins in here.
On a side note...I ordered a box of Polk dollars from my local bank. Only to discover that it was a very early box of the Harrison "D" dollars. It was the best looking box I have ever gotten....look out for some MS67 D Harrison soon! The thrill of finding a great looking coin but even better when there are more!
Good luck in your search and no hard feelings to those PCGS guys.

I have been blessed with the best FDI submission...ever!
Most FDI submissions I end up rather disappointed with the results or didn't even bother sending any dollars in for FDI because of the condition that the Presidents have been in lately.
I just got my results back for the Pierce dollars...and my eyes got wide and my jaw dropped.
    4 - P MS67 FDI
    3 - D MS67 FDI
    6 - P MS66 FDI
    7 - D MS66 FDI
    1 - D MS65 FDI
I do need to thank a dealer that assist me at times getting some rolls. We try swapping but at times it doesn't always work out as planned. It is very nice to find someone that is genuine, sincere and helpful. Thank you Josh!...I owe you!!
I am not a dealer per se, I really only submit coins to grade just for me and my registry. I love this society but there are few that really are in here just to stroke their ego and fill their vaults with investments (graded coins) and never appreciate what they really are. Us, average collectors need to always keep it real and never forget why we collect coins!
    Thanks for listening!

Would you believe a MS67 from a US Mint set?
One would think that all the 79'-81' Mint Sets have been searched over and sold and searched over again. It was just by chance I picked a Ebay seller with low Feedback numbers as one that doesn't sell that much or is fairly new at Ebay. I only paid $8.00 plus shipping. As soon as I looked thru my 16x piece, I suspected the 1981D was a MS67. I even thought the 1981S was a MS66. I was half right, the 1981D is a MS67. Just got the results back from NGC this morning. Really makes the weekend drag out not knowing..
Then, awhile back, I bought 4 original bank rolls of the SBA 1979 P's. All were Narrow Rim but I knew there was at least one MS67 from those rolls. I proceeded to buy a few more from the same EBAY seller. He said he received a whole box as a gift sometime ago....kinda hard to beleive but if he was a collector he would have at least opened a couple of rolls to check out the condition. My first batch I sent in for grading....indeed there was one MS67 Narrow Rim. I sent in a few more with my latest submission and yes...another MS67 Narrow Rim. And to complete my submission results....I found one 2010 D Fillmore MS67...so far...the only one...from both FDI and regular business strike.
Now, I must get my next submission set to go...I bought a set of 2008 SAC's P&D for just over face value and a few look really good!....Wish me luck!....Gosh...this is fun with the results match yours.

Quality Control starts with every Submitter!!!
I, too, agree that there are far too many modern coins with First Day Issue that should not have been graded that well. Most dealers that send in bulk to NGC & PCGS never see the coins until they come back graded and even then never look at them let alone inspect the grade given. I have, on more than one occassion, returned a coin to a dealer because it does not meet the grading standards. I need to be proud of the coins I possess and knowing that one day someone else will own them. Everyone has to be concerned about the Quality Control of the coins and make everyone accountable. I don't know how to get around the bulk submissions from dealers but if you send in junk, you will get back junk as well. The only problem is most Dealers just pass them on to us, the consumer. I know it is time consuming to inspect every coin before they are graded but this would stop some of issues we have now. I, myself, do inspect every coin before they are graded. At $12.50 a pop...its foolish not to! When I get my graded coins back from NGC...The only surprise is when some coins did not grade as high as I first thought...
Quality Control starts with every Submitter!!!
Here is a pair of beautiful coins that do make the grade!

    Six out of Six!
I wrote before that I sent in 2 of the Disabled Veteran Proofs and 4 of the Uncirculated for grading.
Lisa was so nice to let me know the status.

I never had 100% before....either I got lucky or my eyes are not as bad as I believed!

Another Partial Missing Edge Lettering Dollar
I have been fortunate to find three partial missing edge lettering dollar errors since the Presidential dollar series began. I never did find any total blank edge like the Washingtons though. I don't collect error coins per se but I am rather curious about the collectors that do. Is it really that valuable to have a modern day error coin like the missing edge?
Not that I am not complaining though since they do tend to bring in a few bucks to use for other coins I really want to keep.
I did order ten of each of the Disabled Veterans Commemoratives in the first few minutes they went on sale at the US Mint. I sent in only 2 of the Proofs and 4 of the Uncirculated to NGC that same day I received them. I am a Veteran and thought it was for a very good cause and once you see this coin up close, you will love it too! They are still in "Scheduled for Grading"....and there are some Dealers already have them on hand to sell.....still ain't right if you ask me!
Anyways....For those that are Irish...Happy St Patricks Day and for those that are not....be supportive and least offer them a ride home...

    Thrill of the hunt
Many things that an average coin collector receives that a corporation and deep pockets can't.
That thrill going thru rolls of coins you just got from your local bank. That anticipation of finding that unique error or that near perfect strike. I recently purchased a original bank wrapped 1954 S quarter roll. That excitement knowing you were the first one ever to lay eyes on those coins in over 55 years. The awe and wonder of those coins of the luster and shine. Finding a couple of MS66's that laid dormiant all those years protected from all those years passing.
My greatest pride comes from the coins that I personally found in my search for the holy graille. I have another Presidential Business Strike registry set that will never win the top set they are all the ones I labored countless hours searching roll after roll. Those mean more to mean than all the First Day Issue ones that most I had to buy.
Another joy is taking a few of the new pennies and handing them out to people in the bank or post office or store and watch the eyes light up like you are giving them a million dollars. Perhaps that will make a lasting memory and they will "Pay it Forward". People really appreciate that little gesture especially knowing you want nothing in return.
Most dealers and all those corporations with deep pockets that invade our society never see the raw coins but only after they are graded. With no personal interaction or excitement in the hunt....the graded coins to them are just an investment or bragging rights. I am curious why on earth would those people ever bother with modern coins??? Do car or antique collectors buy new models? Not like the modern coins would ever net a hefty return in a few years.
Perhaps we can't stop those deep pockets because they will find a way around things. Deep down we know they are not getting really anything out of this hobby and they will never get it. Maybe NGC will see that someday and perhaps limit all collectors to the number of top set honors so there can be more to go around. Also....no collector lives forever......tee hee!!

Corporate Money has no place in these personal registries
It was fun being No 1 in the Presidential Business Strike set while it lasted. I take pride that I am just a small collector with small resources to be Number 1 for even a year. I only will have NGC slabbed coins in the presidential registry because this is a NGC website. Until PCGS allows NGC coins in their sets, they should be ban from this site as well. I bet over half the awards went to collectors that have over half their collection or more in their NGC sets. Does not quite seem fair enough.
    Also....while I am ranting...
This really should be for personal coin collectors and not some business buying everything because their LLC has no budget and may not even care about the effort an individual has to do to collect their sets. What pride is there being number 1 in every single registry set when it is only ego and not the appreciation for any of the coins.
Changes need to happen soon or the small guy with no chance of ever being on top because some deep pockets company takes over all the reistries. I am thinking very serious making my sets obscure and no one will know what is there.

I found a place still taking orders online for $99
After watching the activity on Ebay on the 2010 Silver Eagles and others reporting the poor quality and the USMint limiting production... its hard to get a good feeling just what the real situation could be.
I broke down and ordered one from the very company that advertises on our webpage here. http://www.moderncoinmart.com
Their site said they sold out right away but are expecting more for delivery later this week.
For those of you that don't send Silver Eagles in for grading...(like me) it might pay you to least check it out and perhaps save a few bucks if they do go a lot higher.
Happy Ground Hogs Day.....and no..I won't be repeating this entry over and over....

I got this one for a song!
Sometimes you just get lucky on Ebay. There was very little action on this 1968 S PF 69* CAMEO Nickel. The seller never even mentioned it was a Star Designated but it clearly was in the picture. So I crossed my fingers and bid on it hoping it was a Star. When it was all over with..I purchased it for a mere $20. I am real surprised though that it doesn't have more registry points. Only 5 exists in that grade with a Star. Does anyone know what the true value might be? Its gotta be worth more than whats listed.

Once again...Changes need to happen here!!
Here we are a month before the close of all the registries to be honored as the best in all categories. Most take it serious and take pride in their sets and being honored as having the best set. However, when PCGS coins are allowed in a NGC Collectors Society and are NOT allowed to have NGC coins on the PCGS site, things need to CHANGE! NGC has never inspected any PCGS coin that reside in any registry set yet they are accepted as equals without question. I have seen PCGS coins that are no way the grade they were given by PCGS. I really believe PCGS does not grade the modern coins the same way as the older coins. Every one keeps stating that their are far less coins graded by PCGS and their standards are much stricter.....that is pure bunk!
Why is Ebay flooded with Presidential dollars going for a lot less then the NGC counterparts.
Changes need to take place and soon! To have a registry take top prize and the owner only has PCGS making no effort at all respecting they are in a NGC Society is WRONG! Until NGC coins are allowed straight up on the PCGS set...I propose there should be separate groups....NGC only coins and NGC and PCGS. Then the dedicated NGC owners will get their just rewards or all modern PCGS coins have less points unless NGC can inspect them to be sure they are indeed graded corrected. I am getting rid of my Satin Presidential set because most are not the grade they are given and would be embarassed with some like deceiving the new owner. Most modern PCGS never cross over either..that should count for something as well.
I, myself, take great pride with the NGC coins I have in my registry. Everyone says..."Buy the coin not the holder"...yes that would be true if the coin was really the grade it should be!
Congrats to all the winners next month....Take heed all PCGS modern coin collectors....Some of us diehard NGC collectors are not happy with it....sounds like sour grapes? Not really....if you take part in any Society...the awards should only go to the ones that honor and respect the very Society that allows them to take part.
Changes need to happen here ASAP!
    Happy NGC collecting!

    Finally found that MS67!!
Ever get a hunch that there has to be a MS67 but trying to find it is another thing all together. I have been searching box after box of the Harrison "D" dollars. There was only four FDI MS67 and they were all found by one person but there was never a business strike "D" MS67. After $10,000 (or more) I finally got a box that most looked better than all the other boxes and it was just pure luck I ever even got that box. I asked my local bank to order another box of Polk dollars and low and behold when I went to get it, I discovered it was a box of "D" Harrison dollars with a very early release date on it too. I initially found 10 Harrisons what I thought was worthy of a MS67 so stacked them up and when it came time to look them over one last time before I submitted them...It came down to just three...oh brother!..This was going to be my last attempt for the Harrison..(really it was...) I just got my status from NGC and two out of the three were MS67!!....Whew...I am very happy about that but also exhausted looking at the same mug over and over.
Now on to finding those MS67 "D" Polks
    Have a great weekend everyone!
