Thanks, Mike and Gary! We are both overjoyed about the baby. We have know for several months, but it still seems surreal. This is the first grandchild for both of our parents so they are just excited.

Interesting, thanks for sharing! I believe I have an example of the quarter Real you illustrate floating around somewhere in a flip. That said, I think yours is far superior. I have a small collection of the current coinage given to me over the years from friends who travel there on medical mission trips. It is always interesting to handle the current coinage of a different country.

That was an interesting read that I would otherwise never discovered, so thanks, Gary, for sharing! It is interesting to see that politics interrupted her work, but I suppose she was no stranger to that type of thing during her time. So this mystery remains unsolved all these years? I can’t help but wonder if or when these abutments will show up.

I'm also trying to mostly stay focused on core projects - which at the moment is mostly Zimbabwean coins and maybe some other stuff soon. But these are a small diversion with minimal cost versus "registry grade" collecting of high grade coins so I'm just having some nice fun with it with no pressure or expectations on it. It's nice.
They don't cost much and don't take up much room.
For the most part, even the upper grades for the common dates are not super expensive. This really would be a beautiful type set to put together. I feel as though you've pushed me closer to the edge here!

@coinsbygaryWow, it seems like they went above and beyond to make you happy, Gary! NGC seems to understand the importance of preserving that history offered by the provenance, and it is refreshing to see them place greater emphasis on that as opposed to profit.

May I kindly request that you not share these? I am doing my best to stick to my core collections, and these coins are a direct threat to that mission!
All joking aside, I have long admired the designs of the early 20th century Italian coins. I've had many higher grade examples on my watchlist for the better part of a year now.

Congratulations on your most recent purchase! I always enjoy reading your journals as we collect things from roughly the same era. Our somewhat aligned interests afford me the opportunity to learn something new that compliments the history of the items I collect which I likely would have missed during my normal pursuits.

He is either rushing about like a mad thing or asleep - I wish I could sleep like that!
Area is loosely Medicinal Chemistry - draft dissertations this weekend were on a new diagnostic agent for neuroinflammation and a compound we are working on which shows promise in treating colon cancer - the diversity keeps things interesting
You and I both! Our cat spends an extreme amount of time sleeping. Our dog is the exact opposite. He gets frequent bursts of energy and takes a few laps around the house. It is entertaining to watch the look of utter disgust on the cat's face when this happens.
I imagine that is a challenging yet rewarding field of study. It has been almost a decade since my last chemistry class, so I am afraid that I am likely unable to hold a serious conversation on the topic. On any note, I wish you the best of luck with your research!

Everyone needs a break, and yours is well deserved! In this season of Thanksgiving I give thanks for my supportive wife just as you do yours. Enjoy your week together! Gary
Indeed, a short break can go a long way. Sadly, this week has come and gone entirely too quickly!

You are doing a lot for a PhD student, sometimes you just have to focus on things. Having organised a number of conferences I now decline politely
I am spending the weekend going through draft dissertations for some of my students - also with feline 'help'!
I agree, it is vital to focus at times, but I’ve stayed well ahead of the curve for my department despite my other activities. If nothing else, maybe I can utilize my time management skills to secure tenure once I get my career going.
It appears your feline colleague is sleeping on the job! I’ve yet to experience the process from the other perspective, but I imagine it is quite the undertaking to review multiple dissertations. If you don’t mind me asking, what is your area of expertise?

I taught a 65 student class for 1 semester. I never want to do it again. It is a lot of work unless you just shove most of it off onto the TAs, and even then. And it is infuriating to see students blow off a class on Industrial Hygiene and Process Safety.
It takes a lot of time to properly develop a course and even more time to manage it once started. For that reason alone, it is not surprising that so many do not enjoy it. I’m somewhat of an odd duck in my department as I find research and teaching equally enjoyable. For me, both present learning opportunities that set the stage to pursue a stronger science.

Wow, the new set cover images are great! I especially like the classic look of the 10 Gulden set. After seeing your new journal banner, I decided to follow suit and try my hand at it. I usually have fun making these types of things, but jeesh, they take way more time than you would think.

Psh! We don't know things! We spend money on old worthless money and share our crazy!
If that's the case, I may fit in just fine! By the way, your comment almost made me choke on my tea.

You should both post over there. That place makes this place look lively.
I am not sure that I would have anything to contribute as I know nothing about paper money, but I certainly would learn a thing or two!

@MohawkPerhaps that would give me the push to broaden my horizons and explore the other chat boards. Now that I think of it, I have often looked into buying an example of the Boulton and Watt £50 note, so maybe I should stay away from the PMG boards for the sake of my budget.

Actually....it wasn't William who initially inspired it, though his collection helped me decide on going down the note path once more. I just got looking through my old albums the other night for some reason and I got thinking about what a massive amount of knowledge about banknotes that exists and that I still need to learn. Nothing will inspire me to undertake something like the prospect of having to learn a lot of new things. That, combined with seeing what William's been up to, made up my mind.
That all seems more than reasonable to me! I am sure you will have a blast learning while you restart that collection. I hope you share your journey with us!

Fenntucky Mike has also had good dealings with them so they just seem solid. Lemberg-zp is what they go by if I remember right and you're shopping for moderns.
Well, if you and Mike are providing a reference, they must be pretty good. I will give them a shot if I ever find myself looking for modern coins. Thanks for the username!

Hey again Don!!!
Things are good with me and mine and I hope all is well with you and yours!! As for what's new with me, not too much. I'm actually exploring collecting some banknotes right now, which is something I used to do years ago. I got looking at my currency albums last night and realized that I had forgotten how much I enjoyed paper money. So, I figured I'd take a little detour and get back into it and see how it goes. I'm mainly looking at German and Canadian notes, but there are a lot of beautiful notes from a variety of places!! It could be fun. Other than that, I'm just living my same old boring life . So, coins aside, anything new with you, my friend?
~Tom
Uh-oh, has @Revenant been a bad influence? There are some beautiful notes out here, but I have always resisted the temptation. With your permission, I will explore that area vicariously through you. All is well on our end. The holiday is giving us a nice break from the hustle and bustle of school/work. This month has been insanely busy, but I plan to vent about that in a journal tomorrow!

There's a dealer out there that sells sets of coins from different countries or lots of 5 sets at reasonable to good prices that delivers good coins that I've dealt with mostly for Zimbabwean Bond Coins. That's about the extent of it for me and Ukraine. But 4 of the 5 Bond Coins I submitted from the 25 they sold me came back as MS67. The 5th was MS66. So they send pretty good stuff IMO.
Interesting, it appears you found a good dealer that happens to be in Ukraine. They sound like a good source to keep a close eye on.
The wait is over - the grades are posted!

This summer is going by way too quick!
@ColonialCoinsUK I love that idea! Once he gets old enough I may try it out. It would be heartbreaking if he didn't have an interest in numismatics, but I suppose there are worse things that can happen.
Thanks you @The Neophyte Numismatist, @zadok, @Just Bob, and @jackson64 for your kind words.
