    A roll searching week!
Friends, I received a monster box of 50 mix date rolls pre 2004 from Stuartt last week. My investment will be $50 over value and the count of submission coins is averaging 2 per roll. I will be down to 10 rolls left this morning with a cool Alabama die break that supports Helen Keller's name like a plant growing off the arm of her chair. Another special coin is the Kentucky with a solid blue reverse, top grade and full luster (looks like a star designation may find this one).
When I complete the final roll I will start over and pick the finest ones with the best luster and then get back to grading my mint sets for the new submission going in 1st of December.

I hope all you guys are SAFE!!!
Friends, As I usually buy and sell all my coins in the club I have made quite a few friends in NY,NJ,VA,PA,Ohio,Tenn. and more that are in the route of the storm. I wish all of you the best and hope you can get back to some type of normalcy soon.

What are the chances of starting a NEW State Quarter Set???
Friends, I am in the middle of a crackdown on grading Mint State Quarters with VARIETIES!! As we only have a couple listed with most that were found not listed yet I need to find out how many it takes for variety grades to become authentic. Once we get that situated Stuart and I will find out how many varieties it takes to actually start a Full State Quarter Set--Proof,MS,SMS,including Varieties. I am already thinking that this will end up being one of the largest modern coin sets to date. When others start getting their variety coins graded there will be a boatload of variety coins for this set.
Sounds like a fun goal to me that may be worth the investment. If anything, we should add to the top pops in the MS set and that will be a fun adventure by itself.

    A busy Saturday ahead.
Friends, I ran across a mint bag of $50 Bisons. It will be a long easy search this weekend to find a spear. At $10 extra for the bag it seemed to be a deal and will fill a hole in my Top 100 if I do find one. Chances are around 1 in 5,000,000, right?? Ah what the heck---worth a look for sure.
    HAPPY COIN COLLECTING!!!

    A month of major trading
    Friends,
I have actually only sold 1 coin in the last month or so out of my sell or trade sets. The trades have been large with three clusters of over $1000 each traveling across the states to get a return of others to fill holes in the sets I am working on. I did two Roosevelt dime trades with Mavins that really popped my clad Roosevelt set into gear and last night a large trade of Silver Eagles to get some Mocom Dollars for the Modern Commemorative set.
It is kinda like when we were kids, trading and selling baseball cards but at a higher value and still the same great enjoyment.

    What a QUICK TURNAROUND
Friends, I did a journal yesterday on variety dimes and expressed a thought that was in my mind in the 2nd paragraph. I had asked for a few dimes to help complete TPETERS set. Of course I knew a couple might help in a couple days or so. WOW what a great bunch of collectors!!! There were guys searching E-Bay and even PCGS dealers searching in the PCGS club. It's is a scholar showing that all of you performed and my thanks goes out to you all.
In less than 24 hours the last 8 dimes needed for Todds set are on their way to his PO box.
Thanks So Much for the help.
    Sincerely,
    Rick
Of course a Roosevelt pic compliments the journal

    Always on the look out!!
Friends, I am starting to obtain a fairly large amount of the Roosevelt dimes. In my pursuits I check the pics of the dimes looking for doubling in hopes that I will find another variety to add trying to make up a 10 coin submission for NGC to grade. The Roosevelt dimes seem to be full of varieties that are not listed on the slabs and obtaining a handful is easy once you load large close ups in your set and check them. Many clad dimes do not have variety attributes listed as there is no record yet so check all your coins for them and start adding to the population charts.
I am trying to help a friend complete his set to 100%. As you all know TPETERS has had a rough year battling cancer but the radiation and Chemo is no longer an option. It does not matter the grade obtained to complete the final 6 coins needed as anything will do fine. The dates I am hunting for his set are: 1970, 1971, 1974, 1977, 1980P, & 1986D. These dimes will be left to his sons in his will and the set at Rank #3 is a great achievement on Todd's behalf but he may not have the strength to even complete the set these days. If you have a hole filler please let me know.
Here is one of the latest additions to the set; 1965 MS67FT dark toning skin colors that the clads seem to get over time.

There is always a way to add a few.
Friends, I have wanted a flying eagle cent since I saw one. Lately there are not very many people purchasing coins for sale. Well I mean not very many people wanting to pay the value or close. So the coin purchasing bank is nearly empty as I have done a few trades at FMV that were more acceptable than selling at 30% off (not gonna happen here).
I was working today and a old dealer/collector came in and asked me if I wanted a few coins off a couple sheets. The 1800s silvers were o-k but rough with too much ware and a few dings in the rims but the large cents and the flyers looked well enough to trade for something later on. I haggled the price down a little and reached for my wallet. I have been trading for a couple months now and this is my first purchase in a while.
    ENJOY---Rick

    Roosie ---2007D--- MS68
Friends, With a little extra time today and needing pics for the dimes in the sales sets on my page I started shooting pics. I am going to enter all the pics without slab view but I took a full slab view for a pic of my first NGC top pop coin graded. This is the only MS68 with none higher.
    THANKS and ENJOY----

    Some jobs are FUN!!
    Friends,
I recently took the Gold store owner up on a great and fun job offer. The job is running through all the coins that go through the store and finding the best for higher sales and selecting the batches for e-bay bidders. The first week was a major search of 150 rolls of wheat pennies for the 1909S VDB, 2- 1955 poor mans DDO and other dates with double mint marks that I found. Also sales on e-bay of 30 proof sets and 10 silver brown box Ikes.
I was happy this week to acquire a 79S and 81S clear S proof sets and a 1958 mint set that is all great strikes. A fun side job and another way to add to my collection.

    This will take a while!!!
Friends, I was sitting around and a guy that does quite a few coins tells me he has 115 rolls of wheats in the trunk of his car. I'm thinking yeah not worth too much and then he says 1.75 a roll. !! that would keep me busy and off of e-bay so I got em. I will be looking for varieties for a while.

O-K NGC ------ now I do feel like chopped liver!!
Thank YouFriends, well not really sure of what the deal is after two submissions in a row showing excellence and getting the lower bar code thrown at me. I guess overall O-K but there are just more MS66 FTs in the pot than I imagined. Only ONE---68 and TEN---67s. Not sure NGC will see another one with my name on it.To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

To answer a question from Meatglazier
I find 7227 different members. However some of those are deceased and others are on to other hobbies and no longer around. Some members have 2 pages and most dealers have no competition points (they are also considered members in my book). I would guestimate that there is 3500 actual members. Give or take 1000 or more.
Should be enough to fill the boat/rocket below you think???

    My latest submission
Friends, On my latest submission I sent in a dime I just knew would garner a star but somehow missed the shot. I did a little research on the whole star attribute and learned a little this weekend on submitting toned coins. A coin can be wonderfully toned "BUT" if it has a small dark brown area turning or going black it will not receive the star.
I am still pleased with the MS67 grade on a 1949 coin that I got for almost nothing. I thought to pass on the toning tips and show the pic in it's new clear view slab.

Cant leave out the full color reverse. A little out of focus but both pics need to show more color anyway. I will work on that when I have more time.

A great trade this week landed a sweet Walker!!!
Friends I set aside a day for a 150 mile each way trip for a trade of Franklins for Walkers. I have wanted a nice Walker for my Type set for years and finally have a piece entered. An exceptionally well strike at a MS66* and a beauty to behold in tones. I just did a couple shots for this journal but will work on a better one for the future pic in the set.

    The 1949-D MS64
Here is a shot I took after removing from the old mint set that shows a better view of the edges.
Maybe a trip to NCS to get the duller toning off would improve the grade. I did see a small nick on thee obverse but never really studied these dimes close as they simply went in for their beauty not the grade so I am happy overall!!

NGC blew me out of the water on 1 coin
Friends, The grades were just as I thought on most.
The 5c got a nice grade of MS66
The no mint mark 10c got a grade of MS66
The S mint mint mark 10c got a grade of MS67
The 1949-D dime that I thought would be a keeper was the only bad choice as it came back MS64??? I must have really missed something.
Over-All not a bad investment on grading and I sure hope the Roosevelt submission does a little better.
I leave you with a pic of the dime that graded a MS64??

    RAW Collection in OVERDRIVE
Friends, I have recently decided to collect the longest run I can do of uncirculated and proof mint sets still in packaging or holders, sets, whatever. The farther you go into the past--- The harder to obtain and then there are actually a few key years that are usually robbed of the coin that was important to the set.
I will trade any graded coins on my Six Mile Rick page for some sets you may have purchased a while back but never added more, or never got around to submitting for grading. Right now I have acquired around 50% starting at 1968 but really interested in getting the full run on all the sets--MS--Clad proof---Silver proof. I have built a large wooden chest for my office that locks and it is called the MINT SETS CHEST. If you have any mint sets to trade off for graded coins just shoot me a message and I will get back to you quickly.
Just another coin quest in my numismatic life.

    Trades,Trades and more Trades
Friends, As I usually get a box of mint sets, proof and circulated coinage from the Cash for Silver and Gold store the pile was getting pretty high. I have sold a few and done a few trades on clusters of 15 sets or so. It's not the regular trading of usual for slabbed coins but it does work well trading the sets for raw morgans, peace dollars and cash.
My latest trade was 5 Silver Proof sets of which I traded for scrap silver; Morgans, Walkers, Franklins, and a few 64 Kennedys. Basically any junk silver or gold is good value towards any trade since I am partners with the owner of a cash for precious metals store. I am currently working on a trade of un-circulated mint sets in their mint envelopes 1968 to date for XF or better raw Morgans and Peace dollars. When I complete this trade I will need to head out to the store and restock my empty shelves with a new supply of raw mint sets. It seems to be just another way of keeping me busy in my coin collecting. Sometimes I do grab something very nice that was traded in and put that with my stash
which is slowly starting to grow.

A pic before the trip in for grading.
Friends, I did mention that I was doing a small submission this month. I have chosen the MS Roosevelt dimes for this shipment. I also finally filled out a submission for my 5 free graders which I used the 1949 toned mint set ( except for the quarter I sold to Jason). The free submission wasn't costly at only $30 for the total. The dimes submission is pricey but I think will be worth it in the end.
I was starting to prep the shipping package and remembered I told a few that I would do a journal with a nice RAW pic in it. So here is a pair for the viewing.

I wasn't too sure on this one
Friends, I have a 1949 nickle that was pretty sharp in fact the steps even have a nice view to them. There are so many coins that I want to send in that I simply bypassed it. After reading Jim's journal I went and cropped the old pic. This is a 1949-D and probably a MS67 to boot. I wanted to see what she looks like here.

    "More Change" is the answer!!!
    Friends,
I have been working on a few deals to acquire top grade dimes, nickles, and pennies. I got with a few dealers and found one for Lincoln cents but got the strangest e-mail today from him. He was offering me German Notgeld Notes (paper emergency money - 1920s). A far cry from Lincolns and I don't know what I would do with 8000 pristine German notes. However he did tell me he had 50 bags of Lincolns that he would bring up to me in November. So until then he will be my source for November.
This week I will be spending a few days with a big time Numis man that runs coin clubs and buys and sells. He has over 2000 sets and boxes of rolls in coins. I will be picking the best pieces possible to send in for grading. I'm sure I will run short in cash as I start pillaging through his coins but I will always be welcome to return for more later on. I have been writing particulars on all coins 1950 to 2000 and hope I don't miss too much and of course I hope my choices are grand.
I TRULY ENJOY ----- "THE HUNT"
