Actually, I am glad you made that mistake. That link you posted was to one of the websites that I had bookmarked on my old computer, but forgot to add when I got this current laptop. Thanks for reminding me about it.

Be sure and update that thread when you find out. I am curious to see what that turned out to be.

As usual, these guys are correct. I will just add this: while it is not impossible for a coin to have both damage and a genuine mint error (or be a variety), in most cases, if a coin has obvious damage to one part, then what appears to be an error on another part will be a result of that damage. In other words, if your coin has been run over in a parking lot, those probably aren't extra numbers or letters that you see. They are just damage that resembles something familiar.
And "Happy 4th" back at you, R420.

Even with the doubling, and the fact that the 1858 is one of the pricier years, I don't think it would be worth the expense of having it graded (plus shipping both ways) given its worn condition.
    Just my opinion, of course.

I would definitely use that picture. In fact, I am thinking of stealing it, and replacing my current avatar.

Do you still have Fred the turtle? I could use a picture of him,and maybe a couple more critters, and rotate the pics on a regular basis.

Is it still in the original mint cellophane package? My first thought was "wheel mark," but it is unlikely that this is one of those.

And, there is at least one working hub with doubling, which affects multiple dies. (at least three dies have been identified so far. )

I'm kinda disappointed, though. I expected to see a Lincoln cent sitting on a log.

Please don't do that, unless you want your coin to be returned as a "Details - Cleaned" coin.

Although your piece has the same design as a genuine coin, it is nowhere near identical. Look at the hair, face and tips of the rays. You need not look any farther than that to see that your piece is not an identical match.
Look, no one on here is trying to deceive you, beat you out of your coin, or cause you grief in any way. We are just trying to alert you to the fact that you have a replica, not a coin, and save you some money and heartache.

This is according to what I have read: You can add PCGS coins to your custom sets, but NGC stopped allowing PCGS coins to be added to the US competitive sets about 2 years ago. Any PCGS coins already in sets were allowed to remain.
I don't participate in the registry, so I hope that information is accurate. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

For the sake of accuracy: the 1968 Kennedy, while 40% silver as you said, is made up of two outer layers of 80% silver and 20% copper, bonded to a core of 21.5% silver and 78.5% copper. That makes it 40/60 silver/copper. So, what you are actually seeing under the tissue is 80% silver.

I have this mental picture of these guys standing around the parking lot, wearing t-shirts and black leather jackets, slicked back 50's hairdo, (feather-do?) matchstick hanging from the Bald Eagles beak, whistling at the Sparrows as they walk by.
