It appears to be a copy of an Athenian Owl Tetradrachm

Many of these were gold plated and sold on sites like the Home Shopping Network. The plating adds nothing to the resale value, and, in fact, would prevent the coin from receiving a grade. Your coin may be one of these.

Some things involving internet chat and messaging are generally accepted by the community at large. LOL is understood to mean "Laugh Out Loud," not "Lots of Love,"  "Larry or Louise," or any other term with three words which begin with those letters. Bold, italics, highlighting, colors, and different fonts are used to draw attention or emphasize. All caps is understood to be the internet equivalent of shouting, regardless of whomever says they are using it in another way.

A little known fact about jgrinz is that, early in life, he worked as a quality control agent for a factory that made M&Ms . They had to let him go, though. He kept throwing away the "W"s.

Just Bob got a reaction from RonnieR131 in It's Token Tuesday! Post 'em if you got 'em.
Mrs.Thomas (Elsie) Joseph ran a grocery store on McRaven Street in Vicksburg from 1914-1927. Tokens were issued in denominations of 25 cents and 5 cents. The reverse is the 1909 Ingle Systems stock reverse, found on many tokens.
This is another one of those "take what comes available" tokens. The reverse is scratched badly, but the token is listed as Unique, so when this one became available, I figured it might be my only chance to own an example.

Dang it! I was hammering away on the laptop, on my way to minting gold coins, when I hit something wrong and closed the game. I wasted about 20 minutes for nothing.

My first thought was corrosion, due to environmental conditions. I doubt I would have recognized the presence of lead from the picture.

Seeing the date was my reason for asking for pictures of the whole coin. Knowing if it was pre- or post- 1982 or 1990 would have an effect on the answer. Also, putting the word "quiz" or something similar in the title would help make the purpose of the thread a lot more clear.

I wasn't implying that you were in favor of commercial grading. I was just quoting the statements that you had made in order to make my point a little more clear. You started your post with the word "unfortunately." That pretty much let me know your position right off the bat.
Although this probably could fall under catagories 3 and 6, TPGs have also helped make the public more aware of problem coins, and helped us learn to identify them.

Misinformation is pure "poison" to this hobby, whether promoted by an innocent newbie, a troll, or a person with ill intent. And I'll not apologize for jumping on the back of anyone spreading misinformation, regardless of motive. Knowledge is power, and misinformation is the power to deceive.

Since NGC considered it a business strike, and PCGS considered it a proof, would it revert back to being labelled as a business strike if crossed back?
It is a shame it lost the Reiver pedigree.

So, you posted a blurry picture of one word on your coin - a picture with glare, and which has the light placed to cast a shadow on the doubled part, and you hoped to fool some members into calling it damage so you could then point out their error? Why would you be frustrated? You got the exact response you hoped to get. You should be thrilled.

A couple of posts have mentioned something that I have an issue with: I can't see how anyone can think "market grading" is a good thing. Assigning a grade to a coin that is based on its perceived market value, rather than its technical merit, is, in my opinion, very detrimental to the hobby. It blurs, or completely erases, the "fixed point" that was mentioned earlier, which is a requirement for standardization in grading.
A coin's condition should determine its value, not the other way around. If this means that a nice looking AU58 sells for more than an ugly MS61, so what? The issue has been around long enough for the coin community to adapt to it and value each coin according to its merits, regardless of whether or not the numbers match the price. A circulated coin can never be uncirculated, and should never be graded as such.

It is my understanding that Dr. Sheldon devised his scale to assign a value to large cents, based on their state of preservation. His theory, as you stated, was that if a "basal state" coin was worth "X," then a Vf30 was worth 30 times "X," an MS 60 was worth 60 times "X," etc. And, as we all know, it has been accepted and adapted by the coin community to include all coins. But, he was not assigning a grade based on the value of the coin. He was assigning a value, based on the grade. This is as it should be.

That is not true. I have been looking for a 1993D Roosevelt dime with a Special Matte Finish. None have ever been found, but I hope to be the first, and I intend to sell it for a huge profit - after posting it on here and talking incessantly about it, of course. It has been my lifelong dream to be the discoverer of this coin.

Oh, wait - someone beat me to it.

    Never mind.
