It's an interesting game, but one has to know the rules to play right.  They're in the first post.

Let's see: past 7,890 posts spread over 260+ pages made over 15 years ago. Yep, you're right!  doh!

@ldhair You're a good sport.  Any theory as to what may have caused the compartmentalized (localized) receding line of denticles and rim wear?  An interesting piece overall.  (thumbsu

Hint: That is NOT rim wear.

Also hint: One of the dates in that last photo is right side up!

The 1858 Inverted Date is pretty interesting. Even the reverse is a bit different for this coin. Short answer is, it was struck that way. I hate to just give a short answer. I'll start a new thread the next day or so. Should be a fun coin to chat about.

Put a gigantic, date-sized, mint mark on a coin and all is well. Stick your modest initials, V.D.B., unobtrusively, on the bottom of a cent and ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE!  (Was there a similar brouhaha over those over-sized mint marks?)  Terrific coin!  (thumbsu

@Mr_Spud Breathtakingly beautiful! 😍 Extraordinary relief and evidence of original mint luster.  Great acquisition!

^^

Thanks, a friend of mine that specializes in half dimes attributed it for me as follows:

Your 1838 h~10 is the 1838 Repunched stars cross ref. V-6 V-7, V-8 Die number : obv.3 rev 4,5,6
Repunched stars ddo -003
Starting at the left base of the rock going clockwise, dooubling seen on the following stars 1,3 stars on left side doubling seen on first star on bottom arm doubling seen on the third star on three of the outside arms.star on right side. No doubling seen on any stars. Diagnostics obv. Die crack on rim below the date.
Rev. Combined with three different reverses.
Rev. #4 (V-6) - minor doubling seen to the right of the base of the first t of states.
Minor doubling seen to the right of the base of the 1st A of America.
Rev.#5 (V-7) - die cravk from the rim though the F of OF to the wreath.
Rev.#6 ( V-8) die crack from the rim to the M in America ****your reverse****
The obv. Was also used for 1838 half dime proofs in very limited numbers. A second obv. for this year Was also used to strike proofs for this year.
Reverses used rev. 4 V6 what is believed to be doubling shows on the right base of the 1st. T of states and on the right side kf the base of the 1st.A of America.

  • it is unknown if these are the results of doubling caused in the die making process.
  • rev. 6 a V-8 die crack from the rim to M of America on rev. 3
  • on 5his die crack it extends up though two denticles, whereas on rev.3 , it goes into one denticles. The serif on the M on this rev. Is broken.

So there was evidently a design change. 🤔

The stars were dispensed with probably because of space limitations due to the continual admission of new states to the Union.

But, pardon my ignorance -- and stubborn resistance to acquiring any Red Book, has any five-cent piece borne the word "nickel" at any time since their introduction? Anybody?

Direct quotes...

Mr. Q.A.:  "What do you think of this one?"   🤔

Ms. A.:  (stated with a distinct French accent)... "It's byoo-ti-FULL!  It's a byoo-ti-FULL coin!  How much i'ZEET?"

Q.A.:  "It's not for sale. This is a web site where coin collectors share their treasures with other coin collectors."

Ms. A:  "Oh, rilly?!"

Q.A.:  "Thousands of coins going back fifteen years!"

Ms.  "Wow!  Where this people find all this money?"

🐓

P.S.  Fine denticular aspect.  Exceptional eye appeal. Pristine fields.

FCL-24FR:  Full Column Lines; 8 Full Reeds in each of the 3 columns, 24 in all.
