Curious to see the coins in that 71' mint set.

HEHHEHHEH but it carries a premium unopened.

A premium would only be expected if there was proof the envelope was not opened. Most people take the words "unopened" as a grain of salt when it comes to purchasing mint sets. Also, if the coins are cherry, then the value of these would be more opened, correct? I'm hoping for the posters sake that it is unopened if that is wjhat he was after. If it were mine, it would be opened regardless of value.

Of course, but it might be that the coins are top-quality "cherries". If the ENVELOPE is unopened, then it carries a premium, not the box (of course).

I made it to the Stack's Bowers auction this morning and I picked up an addition

to my 1889 Mint set...

Yup,

The 1889 Quarter is what I bid on live when I was in Chicago.

Its in a PCGS 66 holder - and I received an Express Mail box

this past Friday from Stack's Bowers; I was so anxious to open

the box, I didn't pay too much attention to the packing slip [ it looked

odd - and way too long ... but I was more interested in looking at the

newest addition to my 1889 Mint Set. ]

Well... this is what I found in the box... [ to be continued...]

At first I was really upset that my new quarter wasn't enclosed;

but as I don't collect early gold, I checked the prices realized for

this coin: $138,000.00.

I immediately called Stack's Bowers and the gal who answered

the phone tried to fluff me off - but when I explained that I had a

$138K coin which I did not pay for in my possession - she immediately

transferred me to Ron Castro - who advised I send it back to them

Express Mail [ he gave me their corporate USPS number ] .

Yesterday, I looked over the paperwork that was enclosed

and the buyers name and phone number were on the invoice.

We had a nice long conversation - and as he was traveling - he said he

would have his secretary open the mail and see if my 1889 Quarter was in

his box. [ His order was just shy of 7 figures ... and my coin would have

been the least expensive one in the group... lol

I have baby sat this coin all weekend - and have not told any of my

friends about it - for fear - "loose lips sink ships"... as they say.

Needless to say although it is a very rare coin - early gold does nothing for me.

The envelope is still sealed from the mint, so I have no idea the quality of the coins. Before I purchased it, the seller stated, "unopened".... well, to most, they only mean the packages the actual coins are in, not the envelope. To my surprise though, the envelope is seals. Paid $5 for it.

Part of me wants to open it while the other part wants to keep it closed. I'm pulled both ways.... :ohnoez:

Well knowing that it has actually never been opened would make me want to open it more. A re-sealed envelope is usually a sign that the coins were already checked for anything decent. Not opened??? Oh yea, would make me wanna check them out even more. lol

That is just crazy! Though I think I just wet myself a little seeing that coin! Love the reaction of the receptionist trying to put you off till you told her what you had and how much you didn't pay for it! lol

It happened to me a few other times - and I always shake my head.

A couple of companies have clients other than my self with the same

name. A few of these companies now have the state I live in as my middle

name !!

I think I would have fallen on the floor if the entire wrong shipment had been sent

to me - it was as I mentioned just shy of seven figures. One coin in particular

would have had my heart - a - fluttering... an 1854-O Half in PCGS 67...omg...

a coin of my dreams !! That wasn't the most expensive coin - its just the one

I would have enjoyed the most over the Labor Day weekend.

I kiddingly jibed my good friend, Dale Friend, saying that if his 1892-O Micro O

in PCGS 68+ was in that box... I would have played " Mickey The Dunce " ...

and not have said anything to anybody ever - and the executors of my estate

could hash it out after I'm long gone... :o

I just hope that my 1889 Quarter shows up - and soon.
