2023, a look back on the new year eve 0

How was your 2023 from a numismatic standpoint?  if you had any goals were you able to achieve them?   If not why not?   Did you find yourself buying more or less than you thought you would?

For myself it was a very good year, I acquired some important, even bucket list items in a couple of cases.   One such item is the NGC generation two holder that I bought during the ANA show in Phx this past spring.    That is a slab generation that I have had opportunities to buy before but passed up for one reason or another, but that is one of the bucket list items that I am happy to cross off the list.     I really only had one goal which was to keep my number one ranking for my 1940 year set, I was able to do that, and it will continue to be a goal for me in the years ahead.   As I look back, I bought more than I had planned to both in quantity and dollars, I decided late in the year to add some coins to my circulated 19th century type set, not sure what spurred me to do that actually.    But most of those were very inexpensive coins so while adding some bulk to my collection they were not overly pricey items.   I doubt that I will keep up that same pace going forward into 2024, but I do have a couple of coins that I would like to procure during the coming year so I guess I will just have to see what comes my way in 2024.

I never really achieve my numismatic goals even after 45+ years of collecting, so in saying so equates to no disappointment on that topic.

Submission wise, I had a mixed year with some excellent grades returning as expected peppered with some surprisingly higher than expected (my self grading usually is probably tougher than any NGC graders table), but when it came to the higher end submissions I made, I will flatly state that this is the first time I did so poorly and my higher dollar submissions came out as "very much less than desirable". A very expensive 1874 Trade Dollar lost a very substantial amount of value between purchase and slabbed, and that one stung the most.

The remaining space in my SPD is very small now, so I am changing my collecting practices once again. This year, I am going to try to save and go after harder to get coins. You might call it the year of the CC for me.

It was a busy year for me, my goals remained the same as the previous year which is to complete sets that I've already started and have been working on. On the purchasing front I picked up far more pieces than I though I would and as far as bucket list items go I'm still filling out my list. 

I've previously mentioned this but it was an amazing year for tokens, having acquired 60 or so, but I expect that things will quite down somewhat on that front, possibly a lot, in 2024. I was also able to add several pieces to my Isle of Man coin and token collections. I started two new sets, Italy 500L and Irish Free State '28 proofs, and was able to acquire the coins to complete one of the sets with the help of a Forum member, the coins were just received in at NGC last week. I managed to acquire several gorgeous 5 centavos from Guatemala of various dates, a top notch '55 proof set of Rhodesian coins, several old ANACS holders with world coins I collect, and many other pieces along the way. The purchases have slowed down towards the end of the year as I save up for larger $ items and I expect this upcoming year will be much slower with fewer coins coming in but 2023 was a truly great year for coins and banknotes.

I havent had much chance to get on here in a few weeks. Its been a hectic few weeks. 2023 was an ok year but, not as well as I was hoping it would be. I added a few to my sets but not a whole lot. The earliest part of the year was the best for me. Then later in the year everything kept going wrong and I didnt get to put any money into my collection fund. I havent bought the first coin in a few months. I have faith and hope that 2024 will be better. Im planning on trying to finish up my set of silver quarters this year. And maybe my 1967 SMS set  of all ms67 cameos and maybe start on a 1965 or 66 SMS set. Id like to upgrade a few of my quarters  this year also. And maybe start a set of either jefferson nickels or rosie dimes. I know I wont accomplish all those things but Im setting a few goals anyways. Hope everyone had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year. 

I did get to add a few awsome tokens to my collection from around the places I grew up and my grandfathers worked. That was very special for me. Those werent as valuable of some of the coins I bought but they hold more of a sentimental value to me.  I had a very good friend to gift me some to.

I did not set any goals for this l past year, but I was able to add 41 tokens to the collection, along with a couple of interesting US error coins and some world coins that caught my eye. All-in-all, it was a good year for all my collections.

My 2023 was a good year.  I purchased a few new books and read them.  I found more coin shops in Montana and visited them.  I added several coins to my registry and moved up the ranks in the sets that I focus on, especially the circulated US coin-type sets.  Moving forward, I hope to add a few of the more difficult coins to my type sets, including early seated half dimes, dimes, quarters, and halves (1838-1840).  Also, an AU58 seated dollar would make 2024 awesome.

2023 is the year in which I entered the "investor class" and stopped living paycheck to paycheck. What could be better? Well, I could impress upon my wife that consumer spending need not approach infinity,  but what are the chances of that? It must be on that second X-chromosome.

Not to worry.  This year will be better than. 2023.  I personally guarantee it.  Then again, maybe I ought to wait until after the elections.  And then 2025 will be a whole lot better than '23 and '24.
