Is it a better grade than what I paid for?

Hello all.

I had this coin graded, as you can see.  I paid the standard fee—$ 40 for coins up to $3000.

NGC value guide is $1000.  I have it on eBay, and someone offered $3000 for it.  It makes me think if I paid for a higher tier (effort?), the coin would have fetched a Deep cameo or something to make the $3000 offer valid.

Newbie here for sure.  Lets say the coin IS worth more than $1000 (NGC price guide).  Would NGC tell me and then charge me for a higher tier??????????????????

Or the buyer is not so honest and will give me grief.  Say they did not get it or some BS like that.

In the immortal words of Oscar Madison when he was on "Let's Make a Deal".......take the money and run !!  xD

As the fellows have said TPG's are not a pay more get better grades.   However, you are right to be concerned about an offer that so much higher than the norm.   IT could just be that the prospective buyer has been looking for that date for some time and really likes/wants this coin.   It could also be that he is a crackout specialist and thinks he can get a higher grade than the current grade.

I don't have any specific advice but if you end up selling it to him please update on how it goes.   And not to try and scare you but this thread on the CAC forum is relevant to your concern that the buyer might be out to play games.

I think you are wise for taking the coin down. It is the "if it sounds too good to be true" but kind of in reverse so to speak. I would be highly suspicious of me having something and a guy asks, "How much do you want for it?" and I say, "A thousand" and he then says, "I'll give you three thousand for it". hm

And then doesn't explain himself.  hm   I would walk away from that too. Something is just not right.

As for the grading, the coin stands on its own merits. While there may be the very miniscule situation where a coin that gets resubmitted that returns graded higher than previously, I would say that situation is not the norm. Give it some thought for a minute that if it started to get around that a lot of the coins NGC grades you need to send back because they grade higher the second time would be severely damaging to their platform and their claim of grading standards. I have read some comments here on the forum stating such a situation, but I have yet to have that to happen in the two times I tried with two different coins and got the same grades back.

I guess if you are hell bent on selling the coin, you could block that person as a buyer first and then relist it on eBay or you could take it to a local dealer who will give you the best price for it.

It is a very nice coin, btw!

Thanks for the reply Powerman5000.  I saw him in concert several years ago.  With LimpBisket and Primus.  Crazy night.

I decided to keep this coin as I am a collector and not really a seller.

The band is Powerman 5000. I agree they got some good songs. I bet the concert you saw was crazy. Thats a 3 band concert bill for chaos. LOL!

You are only the second person to make mention of my username so I will divulge the origin of it.

I was tasked with coming up with a username and I wanted to choose a non-numismatic one so of course the second thing in my life is music (I have a range of likes from everything except for country so my selection was broad). When I tried to put some of my favorite band names in, they were already taken. So were the variants of them. So, surprisingly after about a dozen tries, I got frustrated and decided I would mash two band names together of bands that were less off the beaten path. Thus, powermad5000 was born. It is the mashup of Powerman 5000 and another thrash metal band called Powermad. Powermad never made it really big but they have one song off of The Madness Begins EP (1988) that got stuck in my head and is still in there called "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment".  xD

Thanks for mentioning that! I am not sure I ever told the story of it except by PM to one person.
