Lem E
Hello all. I recently picked up this Lincoln cent and really bought it because of the odd spot on the rim on the reverse above “UNUM”. I don’t know if this is just PMD or something else like a type of lamination or what. If it is not PMD, I am not really sure what this would be classified as. I’m not looking to have it graded or anything like that. I am just curious as to what the other members have to say. I hope these pics are good enough. If not, let me know and I will try to post better ones. Thanks.
Mohawk
Hi LemE, Looks like a cud to me. I'm sure others will chime in, but my vote goes with cud. Lem E

I thought possibly cud at first, but it looks like it is slightly peeled back off the rim.

I guess this is one of those times I need a scope.
Fenntucky Mike
Well when I first looked I thought rim cud then I read your "peeled back" comments, looked again and now I'm not sure. I'm seeing 6's and 🌟's all over the coin now so I'm gonna let this simmer for a bit and do a bit of reading up on this. Lem E
It doesn't seem like there is extra material there, which was kind of taking me away from a cud. It almost looks like something got underneath the rim and just peeled it back a slight bit. I feel like I could get something underneath the crack and peel it back some more. Not that I would do that of course. I’m still looking at it. Here is a shot of the edge. These pics are not coming out well. I apologize for that. It wasn’t listed as an UNC and I didn’t buy it as an UNC, but it is pretty clean. Even has touches of red still.
J P M
It looks like a $20 penny I would let it be. Lem E and Modwriter

It did resemble the bottom left pic from the link. To me, it doesn’t look like extra metal sitting on top of the rim. I could be very wrong. It could be anything or it could be nothing at all. I just thought it was interesting and wanted to know the others thoughts. Thanks all for your input. It is always appreciated.
Woods020
My vote is some kind of damage. It looks like it was used to pry something open like a paint can or something with a circular lid. You can see where it is angled at the rim where it stops. Lem E

Lem E
Here are a few more shots that may or may not help. I can’t get a good angle shot inside the rim. The bottom pic is with the flash on. Edited September 15, 2021 by Lem E Woods020
Woods020
No reason for a cud to be missing material under it. It’s the opposite. Not sure what but I still vote damage seeing the displaced metal. Lem E

Given this new information, I have to vote damaged as well. Woods020 and Lem E

Coinbuf
From the initial photos I was thinking a cud; from the new photos I am thinking it might be a retained lamination planchet defect or damage. Lem E
