So I am an owner of a hoard of sealed circulated penny rolls the question posed here is. 

 Whats a good price for true unopened wheat penny rolls? I may have over payed, but previous openings of the same hoard revealed quite a few very good specimens....none like I have ever seen to date, real authentic au pennies from the 20's and 30's...very few 50's like one usually finds with these type of rolls.....a quick look at the red book seems 2 dollars a penny, so I was thinking 30.00$....these are sealed rolls from way back....zero rolls from modern packaging.

well if I want to break even......you would need 24 bucks more.......each roll has a chance at a gem...thats basically what I'm going to be; A carnival barker  when I throw them on the table....lol.

Unfortunately you might state unsearched but few really believe that. I had seven rolls of wheat cents that I admitted having searched. I listed them on EBay and even though I had 100% feedback, I wasn’t able to sell them individually for 8.99 or as a group! There are a lot out there. If they    Are in OBW then that may give you an edge. Some of the pennies I had were desirable dates and conditions. Ultimately I decided just to give them to my grandson. It was disappointing to me since I paid more than that for them. Nonetheless, I would pay $30 for a roll but would struggle with more than that unless there was a 1909vdb on the end and Bank of San Francisco on the wrapper. IMHO

Call me jaded but I very much doubt that what you have are true unopened rolls, unopened by you maybe but not really unopened.

I'll do it Bob.  Here's the thing, Rocket.....you could have actual old rolls of cents.  It's possible, though unlikely.  However, there are many unscrupulous people out there who either acquire actual old coin wrappers or get reproductions of old coin wrappers printed up for them.  Both are actually pretty easy to do.  And these people can put anything into these rolls that they want.  There is a lot of this kind of thing out there with Wheat Cents.  I cannot tell you how many times I've seen someone fall into this kind of trap.  They'd buy a roll that looks like that on eBay...old looking wrapper and everything, often with a 1909 VDB reverse showing or something like that, then they get the roll and there are one or two 1909 VDBs on the end of the roll and everything else in the roll is post-1934 and often post-1940.  And then they'd come into the brick and mortar shop I worked at and sell us these Wheat Cents for 10 cents a piece just to be rid of them and the experience.  I'm not saying that you're being deceptive.....I'm saying you may have been deceived.  It's possible that you have genuine old rolls, but it's also possible that you've fallen into the trap.  "Unsearched" Wheat rolls are something I'd recommend people stay away from.  Think about it......the 1909-S VDB has been famous and coveted for over 100 years.  The 1931-S has been famous and coveted for 90 years.  The 1955 Doubled Die has been famous and coveted for 66 years.  These three coins alone pretty much guarantee that any accumulation of Wheat Cents has been searched at some point in the past.  This includes old rolls.  You could have rolls of Wheats that have been wrapped since World War II, but they've been gone through back then looking for the 1909-S VDB, 1914-D and the 1931-S.  So, even an 80 year old roll of Wheat Cents is probably not "unsearched" for key dates.

Good point(s), and yes I agree 100%.....but the rolls I did go thru had a few ''secondary'' rarities if you will, making me think the rest are actually better than the other ''unsearched'' rolls we have looked upon skeptically....but if I did open them up I lose the OBW factor....a point I am counting on with my own personal experience.....

 I'm selling these at a show, face to face I 'd even insist to the buyer to open them up in front of me to be sure there isn't a 1940 to 1958 year wheatie hoard inside.....now thats confidence...if it is, 15 bucks back on the spot.

Someplace, I have a $50 bag of unsearched wheat cents....except they are nearly all "unsearched" 1947 cents. That's about as "unsearched" as they get now-a-days. Buy 'em for the fun of digging through 5,000 little bronze cents, but don't actually expect to find so much as one real "keeper." Two or three cents per coin is fair.

PS: I suspect the wrapper is fake. Mint and FRB did not roll coins, and there was no reason for BEP to print wrappers.

OBW rolls bring in a premium, they will have federal reserve banks name on it certain federal banks pull an even higher premium, what you had was a typical roll of mixed circulated wheat cents that were wrapped in roll by a bank possible searched at that time by a collector they are typical to find . I don’t collect OBW anymore but I did have one last roll OBW 1956-P wheat cents out of curiosity I decided to crack it  open ( I never cracked an original bank roll ) they were red and mint condition several of them had small dark freckles on them ! Towards the middle of the roll I noticed they started to get die crack just above Lincoln’s hair, I also had 2 “cracked skull” Lincoln I sold to a friend he really wanted them literally begged me I said okay I sold them to him for like $10 each . This was about 10 years ago I still have the remaining 48 coins put back in ripped open end of the roll and resides in plastic tube they are still red ! To this day. We should all have a chance to crack open an OBW someday

More than reasonable, imho....10 cents a coin gets you, 5 bucks..add a few keepers and a  15$ cost at a coin show seems fair ,to me, as well...

I agree.  I had the experience once, with a roll of 1969 Canadian Dimes that I was able to actually buy at the face value of $5.  No 1969 Large Date, but man, it was a fun experience!!!  I've also had the experience recently of cracking many OBW rolls of 2021-P WCD quarters, but that wasn't any fun.  For over a month, every time my fiancée and I went to get rolls of quarters for laundry, we'd get solid Brinks rolls of 2021-P WCD quarters......we're both so sick of 2021-P WCD quarters!!!!

I have three of the 2020-W Privy Marked quarters.  My Salt River Bay is a permanent fixture in my collection because my dad gave it to me.  He found it at the Laundromat he goes to.  The other two (Weir Farm and Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller), I found in the wild.  I haven't decided what to do with those two yet.....I may keep them, but I could put that money into my Faustina the Younger collection...........

It's not just eBay Alex.....Etsy is likely a bigger problem with every coin issue you can think of than eBay is, including this one.  I've also seen this kind of thing in antique malls where vendors rent out retail space from the mall.....lots of sketchy Wheat rolls in places like that, too.  Any place that sells coins, there's a risk of this aside from a reputable dealer who just sells Wheat rolls as Wheat rolls, not unsearched Wheat rolls, for a reasonable price.

before then...and yes, there are those out there...but this guy passed away and the granny is selling off the hoard.......she is not a numismatist by any stretch but the hubby was.......I'll keep you guys updated on Sunday....8 am. til 2 pm.

one thing I found out....selling coins at a coin show requires a hand truck...........this stuff gets heavy!!! I just put together a fold up crt for tomorrow.....and added a few 2008 ase's to sell...........encapsulated those.......pretty much done with everything til then.  All the well wishers are appreciated, thanks to all the replies!!!

sold all my silver culled quarters for 400 bucks. 80 in all. That and a few proofs at a c note. That was it had a few nibbles on ase ‘s and the Wheatley’s offered here. But no takers. Sold one handful of Wheatley’s to a kid 👦 he had a lot in that fist ful 😂
