If you mean the bends in the staples that isn't distortion, that is just that type of staple/stapler.  I use on myself.  If you mean whay makes them appear to be so high off the surface of the 2X2, I don't know.  Part of it is the lighting angle that is causing them to throw shadows.

Simple punching malfunction.  For a cleaner line, squeeze the feeder directly onto the cardboard -- then punch.
