What the heck happened here?

The most likely cause is that the coin was dipped before it was sent in for certification and the chemicals were not properly rinsed off and neutralized. The residue chemicals have attacked the coin and made it dull. My guess is that this coin will be impaired, even if you send it in for conservation. I believe that the luster has been impaired permanently.

The seller is "Invaluable, LLC. and participating auction houses." There is no connection with Federal or State asset disposition....it's just a name.

Yes.

 

I've watched a few of their auctions in the past. Their estimates are really high, but the coins usually wind up going for around what the price guides say (in other words, strong retail). They don't usually get up to the estimate.
