When did this forum turn into a fight club?

Seriously? Are we in Middle School?

If someone starts a thread about a crazy high priced coin on Ebay, 2 pages will be replys of people saying Wow lol the sellers crazy! and BOOM out of the blue someone bashes the seller in question or the original poster and all hell breaks loose. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and we are free to post a link to someones web page or Ebay listing. But one of the threads I was reading and I commented on went from talking about the seller to open mic night at anger management.

Somethings are not meant to be posted in a public thread, If you have an issue with another member, send them a PM. I can understand a thread that warns members of some other member who is a scam or whatever but leave the personal insults for a text message. The main reason I say to keep your personal issues out of public threads is because you know one of that persons friends will comment on it and BASH YOU BACK! And it makes your reputation sink when you insult another member about thier post on someone elses thread!

The members who are saying that the forums are a friendly place for new collectors and expert numismatists to chat and meet other collectors are 100% right. I know that if I saw threads that had members bashing each other like 12 year olds, I would not join. I am suprised the Admin has not removed more posts per day than they already do. I think its rediculous if a thread has 12 pages, and 11 of them are people being quoted and ridiculed, don't you think so as well?

I am happy to be a member here, as I am sure many of you are. There are many members here that are mature enough to not feed the drama. I joined this forum to learn more about this industry, get opinions from those with more experience than I have and to chat with others who would rather sit under a lamp holding a 60x magnifier staring at wheat pennies looking for RPM's on a sunny summer day, instead of going fishing or golfing with friends.

That being said, We are all hear because we love coins, paper money, comics and collectibles. There is a reason all the arguement threads get removed even though they didn't start out in a negative way. If you want to argue with someone, keep it between you and them. You don't need to embarrass another member in a thread because they didn't leave you positive FB on Ebay or whatever. I am sure you wouldn't like being the topic of a thread calling you a total insufficiently_thoughtful_person who doesn't know AU from PF70.

I am sure many if not most people who read this will agree.

Have a good day.

-Dave

There were some very inflammatory comments from an inflammatory member...... thats what sparked all of it. I hope he will remain over in Hollywood and stay out of this forum.

There were some very inflammatory comments from an inflammatory member......

hm Which one? (Rhetorical question) There were so many, and I didn't even finish reading the last few pages because the entire thing quickly escalated and spiraled into total chaos. I didn't have a problem with voicing disagreement with a particular dealer or members, but the personal attacks were way out of line. No one who posted within the first two pages, if I recall, attacked anyone. Shortly thereafter, everything exploded.

This will be my last comment on the now deleted thread.

I was referring to Crypto calling all of us a bunch of 2nd tier collectors on a 2nd tier forum ran by a 2nd tier company.......

It ended up looking like a session of Congress.

Actually ended up looking more like verbal derogatory statements, defamation of character, and tentatively slander if not removed.

I did not partake

I am actually more surpised NGC did not put a stop to it.

We do not want to mimic ATS, I think I am safe to assume they do not want to happen either.

I was actually suprised how vicious the particular thread got myself ... the origin of the thread actually started pretty well, we all like to see unusual listings and I am no exception, but I saw no reason to bash the particular seller.

My personal curiousity was based on why he was asking as much as he did in his eBay listing. He answered that in a most gentlemanly way and for that I am grateful. I may disagree, but then beauty is in the eye of the beholder much like art, music and the person you love.

I am embarassed that I had particpated in the thread even if it was on a peherphial issue such as marketing tactics. I just hope the forum moderators will place bans on such personal bashing in the future ... it hurts the forum, the individuals, and the hobby.

I think the conversation was getting borderline controversial when members began commenting on the mental health of Julian. I didnt really care for the thread because it wasnt the first time I seen a high price and I think I owe Julian a little bit of respect. I just couldn't believe how the people ATS came over acting like they were god and calling us 2nd tier collectors. It wasnt until today after I had time to think about that I began wishing I never commented in the thread. I now realize that crypto was just trying to enjoy the unfostered environment that we have over here. Every now and then some people need to let of some steam and they are clearly not allowed to over there. Thats why we can all be glad that we are members of this great forum.

Why continue to put it as an "ATS" vs "Here" type of thing?

It was a forum member HERE that went over THERE to post a thread about what was going on....to inflame things and stir up the pot.

Some folks are only "here" and some are only "there", but there are many that are at BOTH PLACES.

As Lance says above, it also opened MY eyes about a few members here....as a few members seemed to want to attack anyone who didn't agree with them....

ATS posters are negatively generalizing anyone posting on an NGC board (sounds like "I hate the forum format, I hate the people").

"< Both forums are great and many actively participate on both forums including Julian. >

I disagree and while many do actively participate in both it isn't enough to raise the merit/avg of the post/ers over there."

As if the only redeeming quality of thousands of people is the occasional presence of someone who owns some PCGS plastic and posts on the PCGS forum, like little Messiahs trying their best to ransom the hopelessly lost sheep. This is just as bad as the flaming in the referred-to post. People, drunk on kool-aid, taking it to nationalistic/patriotic/biker-gang levels of idiotic anti-human generalizations. "You own NGC slabs? Untermensch!!!!" "You post on the NGC board? Untermensch! Unterforum!!!!"

PCGS forum members always come over here when they don’t care for something that was written in a thread. Who’s “crypto?”

He's one of the most established authorities on Trade Dollars on the planet. He also is a no nonsense kind of guy and pulls no punches. He is like that on the PCGS boards as well. He has a decent post count here but that must have been from back in the day. He hit a nerve with his comments but there were germs of truth in his posts if anyone really cares to do some self reflection and read his words carefully in context. John is top shelf.

When I first read it, I thought “crypto” might be shorthand for someone else but I couldn’t imagine the person I was thinking of saying those things. Thanks for the clarification.

I respect your opinion, but disagree fully. I dont really care who you are. Nobody has the right to call our host 2nd tier, this forum 2nd tier, and the collectors that enjoy the hobby here 2nd tier.

I don't disagree with your sentiment. No one likes to be insulted. But I think everyone's entitled to voice his opinion and crypto had every right.

IMO it was inflammatory and served no purpose. An unfortunate mistake in judgment.

Disagree, if you will, but defend his right to say it.

Lance.

I am not involved with what triggered this thread, nor do I want to be, except for the call to civility which is everyone's business and responsibility. However, that aside if a person desires to spew out insinuations, insults, and hate, the first amendment gives them that right. Of course that's within certain decorum established by the web host and enforced by the moderators. What it all boils down to though is that while everyone has a right to free speech, no one has a right to be heard, that is unless we cede it to the one throwing the insults.

I know this is stirring the pot a little, but if you were looking for a perfect time to post that kool-aid image with the PCGS logo, the thread that was started ATS to bring them here would be the perfect place.

I'm glad the thread is gone but in the thread ATS some say they don't come over here because they find it is typical behavior of the NGC message board. I find that "LOL" funny. There is NO comparison. I've been on both boards for about 10 years and the PCGS board is FAR worse...hell...it's not even close. For the simple reason there are more members. The "one bad apple" theory applies. The more people the more of a chance threads spiral into oblivion. The PCGS board wins that hands down. Even some PMs I've received over there are rude.

Some perspective...

This kind of stuff happens all day, every day on the Comics and General Discussion areas of this very board.

The Coin side is a peaceful haven compared to the other sections. It's night and day different.

Just something to keep in mind.

I posted in that thread yesterday before I went to the casino. When I came back to the forum today, it was poofed. I have no idea what happened but I can imagine why it would turn ugly.

I have only been a member ATS for a few years because I refused to sign up for the longest time because I can't understand the format of that forum. Funny thing is that the members ATS are complaining about the format over here in the thread ATS.

Your post has sparked a thought in my mind. It occurs to me that when members ATS get out of line and get banned, many of them end up as members over here. Yet if this forum inherits all of the problem children, why does this forum remain "sleepy hollow"?
