GTG (REVEALED) - 1880S Morgan -- PCGS

36 posts in this topic

Well I think the chin probably looks worse in the pic than in-hand. I'm gonna go with MS65.

Yeah, I think that's the route I'm going to go as well. The rest of the coin really looks nice, so its a matter of how bad that chin mark is in hand. I'm going to go with 65

I think the details from the picture (or scan is my guess) is worse than in hand as well. I would bet it graded MS65.

It is a photo, not a scan. One direct light source (quite high) and two diffused light sources.

:) - It is a tough one especially with PCGS .

ALONG with the Chin issue it, looks like the eagle is a dragon breathing fire :)

hahah

Luster makes me want to say 65

Maybe I can get a VAM status for fire-breathing-eagle? lol

I'll post the grade tonight sometime.

The scuffs on the top of her cap concern me a little, as with the aforementioned chin & neck. Like most of the 80-S's it does look semi PL, but no.....I'd say MS-65 :-) Nice Coin!

Here she be. Thanks to all for their input and guesses. FYI, this was a coin from Shane (Kryptonitecomics). It more than surpassed my expectations for the grade.

I'm going to error on the side of caution due to the various marks in the pictures (some are probably on the holder) and say its a MS63

^^

Personally, I love the looks of this coin and would add it to my collection if I had happened to have stumbled upon it in a local store to me (no offense to online dealers, but for coins I prefer to hold it in hand prior to purchase)

Is the photo yours? Are there more ticks in hand?

Yes, the photos are mine. The only ticks noticeable in hand are the one on the lower jaw and the slight abrasion to the left of the eagle's mouth. I didn't see anything in Shane's pics, I don't see anything else in hand, and that's about all that shows up on my posted (taken by me) photo also.

meh, guess goes to show, plastic around a coin doesn't always mean everything.

It's gotta be that hit on the jaw, or scrape as it looks long and wide.

Yep, thus my guess of MS-63. Needless to say, I think PCGS got it right.

If it were an 1893-S I am almost sure it would be in an MS65 or MS66 holder. Just goes to show they aren't always just looking at the coin, but also the $$$. lol

My experience has been that PCGS and NGC are almost always more conservative with better date coins. I have an 1894-S NGC MS64, that looks comparable to MS65+ coins I have seen. It has impeccable strike, luster, and eye appeal, and the surfaces are very clean. The same can be said for an 1885 CC NGC MS64 Morgan that I have.

EDITED TO ADD: I'm applying this to intermediate level coins; super rarities are (e.g. 1804 Draped Bust Dollars, 1933 Double Eagles, etc.) tend to be graded very leniently.
