What is a "relic" medal?

First let me say that this topic is a bit creepy knowing there are medals out there with "parts" of saints on them; however, I do enjoy learning and researching. The answer;

 

Relic medals are parts or items or something associated with a Catholic Saint.

There are 3 levels of the relics;

First Class Relics - Actual part of a saint (a bone, a hair, a limb, etc.)

Second Class Relics - An item that the saint wore (a sock, a shirt, a glove, etc.)

Third Class Relics - The Third Class Relics on this site fall into 2 categories. The first category is a piece of cloth touched to a (first or second class) relic of the saint. Second category: In cases where there is no known existing relic of a saint, the cloth has been touched to the shrine of the saint.

Relic Medals are medals that have a connection to a Saint. 1st class medals contain a part of the Saint (bone, hair, etc...) while 2nd class medals contain something that was used by the Saint such as a shirt. 3rd class, which can be bought and sold contain something that has touched the Saint, generally a piece of cloth. 4th class have been touched to a second class relic.

The Relic Medals I know of are medals that were made with a Saints likeness that contain a third class relic. The following is the definition of a third class relic.

A relic medal is a token that is attached to a relic (generally a piece of cloth) which has been associated with a saint. Usually these are given out in limited numbers and are considered third class relics.

It's a religious medal. Usually has a part of the actual Saint such as a bone or lock of hair but can be something less like not of the person but that the person touched.

These medals are to be given freely and not bought and sold as a sign of respect to the passed Saint.

A Relic Medal pertains to medal's that are based around Christian Saints and they fall into four categories:

 

First Class Relic is the body or a portion of the body of a Saint; example: bone, flesh, or hair. These are considered so precious that they are rarely entrused to individuals, but are placed in Faith Communities.

 

The Second Class Relic is an item or piece of an item used by the Saint while in the body; example: clothing, Bible, Breviary, Mass vestments, and so on. Again, second class Relics are considered so precious that they are rarely entrused to individuals, but are placed in Faith Communities.

 

The Third Class Relic is something that has been touched to the body (or to a portion of the body) of a Saint. Generally, the Third Class Relic is a piece of cloth, but it need not be, as long as the item so touched conveys holiness and is touched with the intent that it be a third class Relic. Third class Relics may be given to individuals, and may be sold.

 

The Fourth Class Relic, somewhat less known, is something that has been touched to a Second Class Relic of a Saint. Generally, the Fourth Class Relic is a piece of cloth, but it need not be, as long as the item so touched conveys holiness and is touched with the intent that it be a fourth class Relic. Again, fourth class Relics may be given to individuals, and may be sold.
