Question: as one of the "key" Barber dimes, was this upgrade hard to find?

It took a couple of years to locate an AU 58 - and of course, there were two being auctioned with in a couple of weeks of each other. I thought I'd grab the first one that hit the block [ @ Heritage - last night ] as I was able to bid live on their site.

Stack's has another 01-S Dime in PCGS 58 [ nice coin, too ] but I had a bit of a

problem with their Live bidding last time - and didn't want to take a chance.

This 01-S in 58 upgrades the one I took out of the Dansco which graded 53 at PCGS. I now get to crack out the 53 and put it back where it belongs.

Oh, about as many as you have Half Dimes...

As someone says, coin collecting isn't a hobby.....it's an obsession, indeed ;)

Who ever said that was a "wise old sage "... :signfunny:

Nice Barber half Rey. Those spots don't look like dip residue to me, Dip residue will usually have some sort of wild toning to it also. These are just spots. Looks like the coin may have had some slight corrosion or pvc damage and was dipped/cleaned but was not able to remove all. JMO

I believe that dip residue is common as a dark color.

Case in point , this is 1907-O Barber Quarter I have had since I was a kid .

I dipped it 40 years ago, you can see the gold and black residue on the reverse.

This one is a key date....just bought it. What do the "experts" on this board figure it is worth?

A couple of years ago certified NGC AG3's were selling for $50- 60

and G4's were going for $80.

Your coin still has alot of "Liberty" on the headband - and some

"dyed in the wool LIBERTY graders" would call this coin a VG 8.

I'd venture a guess of $225 if it makes it into a VG 8 holder.

The reverse lower rim wear tells me the coin could squeek into a G4

holder ... but my grading is still a bit conservative.

One of the Barbers that I inherited from my father.....

For years I thought this and several other Barbers and Seated Libs had been cleaned.

ANACS called it AU-55. I may just cross it over to an NGC holder.

HiHoAudio - that's a very nice rememberance of your Dad.

It probably was "conserved" at one time - but if ANACS

blessed it - NGC would also give it a 55 as well. Its a

little too white not to think it wasn't dipped earlier.

I have a few coins from my Grandfather and Dad

and they'll be the last ones I'd ever sell.
