JKK got a reaction from Crawtomatic in Coin Value Fluctuation
Supply and demand. It's that simple. If people get excited about them, prices rise. If people get trouser grief over them, down go the prices. A lot of foreign coins are much lower in mintage/survivorship than certain high demand US issues, but far fewer people want them. Which is how an 09-S VDB penny can be worth low four figures in nice condition, with a mintage of 484K, whereas there are world coins with mintages in five figures that sell for less than ten bucks.

… and with that, the United States Mint Director assumed the sweet smile indicative of a job well done.

Coin is invisible. Doubt that this happened at the mint.

JKK got a reaction from Marquez-Collector in My next few coin shows
Anyone coming to the WCC show in Portland (November 2-3)? Usually a pretty good one, especially for ancients. Plus, if you spring for early bird, you get to hand me your money. Not many people ever get to say that, you know (but it would be a nice trend).

JKK got a reaction from Crawtomatic in 1777 gold coin
What's the reasoning behind thinking it's gold? Looks to me like a brass token, just from the pictures.

JKK got a reaction from Johnny Reed Collection in whats going here then?
You are looking for a nonexistent phenomenon. I understand you asking about it, and there's nothing wrong with having done so, but it's nonexistent. Now you know. Or choose not to.
If you go to a small fishing pond in Kansas, and you bring the gear to catch tuna, and someone there tells you there ain't no way you're going to hook a saltwater fish in fresh water, and suggests you take a look at the normal range of where tuna swim, would you spend a couple hours casting your line in the freshwater pond just to be 100%? Or would you go figure out where the fish actually live?

Welcome to the boards. Let me start by asking you a question. Do you know what the term “proof” refers to. It’s not simply a shiny a coin and you may be able to answer your own question by making sure you understand that term first and foremost.

JKK got a reaction from KarenHolcomb in Cupronickel?
Not normally. Nickel has to be nearly 100% to be attracted to a magnet. Old Canadian nickels will, but our nickels won't. I believe it's because ours are not a high enough percentage of nickel, and theirs were. (Not sure what their current coinage is made of.) I doubt that nickel-bronze and nickel-brass (not uncommon alloys in world coinages) will adhere to a magnet either.

JKK got a reaction from Nicholas Error Hunter in The original New York penny?
It's one reason I love world coin collecting. You can find some very old stuff for reasonable prices. The key is demand: there aren't that many of us, relatively speaking. Late Roman imperial bronzes in decent shape typically retail for $10-15, for that matter. If you're up to your rear end in loose cash, think about working on an uncirculated set of Indian head pennies. If you aren't, well, that's why it's fun to be able to get really cool, very old stuff for very reasonable prices.

JKK got a reaction from KarenHolcomb in Can somebody identify this for me?
I can be wrong about many things. That's why I said that if I made a mistake, I'd like to know. I'm not omniscient. Feel free to question anything I say. Of course, I'll take that more seriously when it has evidential support.
Those are the catalog numbers in the catalog where I looked it up (and in response to your query, went all the way back and looked it up all over again to make sure, then went to Numista to make absolutely sure I wasn't wrong on the denomination). By handing them to you, I am giving you (or anyone) the key identifiers to use in attempting to refute or uphold my ID.

Until you are willing to measure and weigh it, I don't recommend that. Those are basic data and it is needlessly frustrating to research such coins without them.

JKK reacted to R420coins in The best one yet lol
That's right! A 1992 lincoln that's supposed to be zinc, which we see clearly that this one is not! It's all like a manual.that was put together, that you use or go by weight tolerance.that's a joke because clearly this is not zinc ,yet! It's in the tolerance of zinc! Ok! So you telling me I'm the bad guy for seeking answers? Because you sure make it feel that way! Lol
