FYI - coin die varieties
dprince1138 replied to dprince1138's topic in Newbie Coin Collecting Questions
I had not yet packaged my coins, as I am waiting to receive the 2.5" plastic flips to put them in. I had submitted my invoice, but will not be charged until delivery of the coins. I was researching an 1854 O Seated Liberty half dollar, with a die variety that was not listed on the NGC Varieties website. This coin seems to have a half of a dozen die varieties, but NGC only lists one, so I decided to search and find an NGC rated coin with an unlisted die variety, but trying my utmost, I could not find any. Any coin graded by NGC with an unlisted die variety only indicated the grade and the die variety was listed by the seller. I had originally gone to PCGS, but they were much more expensive, i.e., membership cost $69 vs $25 for NGC, as well as all services being more expensive. However, if the specific goal is to validate a die variety, particularly one that is not listed on the NGC Varieties website, then the coins need to be sent elsewhere. For such a self-aggrandizing service as NGC, it is rather ludicrous that they do not have the capacity to identify an enormous number of significant die varieties. -

Thank you for the bump. -
Perhaps a die crack and clash. I have some coins that have both of these strike type issues. Although, the area that seems to be scrapped\peeled may be an occurence of some other issue. Also, while I found a die crack specimen, it did not have the 2nd symptom and, generally, die strike issues are consistant.

I submitted my first coin set to NGC. I decided to only send two, the 1866 half dollar (WB-103) and the 1890 dime (F-111). However, I am somewhat concerned in that one variety is not listed on the NGC varities site, and the other has many attributes not listed. -
I do not believe that your image is an FS-501 die variety, as there is not the indication of D remains seen in the attached examples.

It does seem to be an indication of a strike issue of some sort, but I do not see anything on this particular condition either. The closest that I could find is RPM-003, which has a number of conditions (D over a horizontal D).

One difficulty that I have found, is that varieties are not all listed at all sources, as well as different sources describe different attributes. At this time, I use 5 different variety sources (PCGS, NGC, Seated Dime Varieties, Dave's Bust Half Dollar, NNP), with a new one (variety vista) identified today. However, as mentioned above, more minor variations would not be widely documented.
