rrantique reacted to Mohawk in NGC graded coins ONLY in Registry Sets (US and World)
I personally think you have an awesome outlook on this whole thing Coin Cave. It sounds like you collect your coins first and because you love the coins, not necessarily because of the holder they're in and you're on the Registry because it's fun for you. This is a hobby and it's supposed to be fun! Sadly, I think a lot of people, particularly Competitive Registry collectors, seem to forget that. They get so caught up in plastic collecting, Registry points and competition that they forget that they collect coins. For me, the Registry was about one thing.....proving to myself that I could win a major award. And I did. Twice. But, if I'm to be completely honest, Registry collecting lost its luster quickly once I had won that first award. I quickly found myself wondering why I was continuing to do it.....I had reached my goal and that was good enough for me. So I stopped and started chasing my ancients, which I love and which have so much to learn and so much variety that they will sustain me for years. The second big win was for a set I had completed years ago aside from one big non-competitive rarity. I know a lot of people would just keep trying to win again and again, but that's not the kind of guy I am. I reached my goal and I was content with that. The second award was an unexpected bonus. I'd rather step aside gracefully and contentedly and allow others who haven't won have their shot at achieving that big goal for themselves while I move on to another chapter. The best thing about the whole NGC thing for me (even better than the awards actually) was becoming a part of this community, and I've learned that I can be an active member here without Registry collecting. You guys are my virtual coin club because the clubs around me.....well, they're not the greatest. But I don't feel a void because I have you guys

No, because SEGS is a good and legitimate service. (Do NOT confuse them with SGS). They may not grade to the standards of PCGS or NGC, but they are better at variety attribution than either of them

rrantique reacted to coinsandmedals in New purchase from London trip
Yeah, I agree she’s definitely a keeper. I am still amazed she can put up with me sometimes. Expensive might be an understatement. I suppose that was one of the good things about Marion’s reluctance to collect coins. The bookstore was amazing. It was 2 stories and full to the brim of antique books. Madison found a first edition of Pride and Prejudice for £1800 ($2284). That would be an awesome find! I had hoped I would stumble upon an original copy of Montagu’s The Copper, Tin and Bronze Coinage and Patterns for Coins of England: From the Reign of Elizabeth to That of Her Present Majesty. I found a copy in the states but they wanted north of $200 for it. I always try to add antique reference books to the collection. She has a small collection of antique Shakespeare books that I’ve purchased for her during the course of my travels but she doesn’t really collect anything. I’m determined that I’ll eventually get her to collect coins.
No worries my friend. I honestly didn’t notice until you said something.
Just for fun, here’s one of the older references I have in my collection.

rrantique reacted to Coinbuf in So.... Uhhmmmm... How will NGC grade the new
No perceptible change that I have noticed in the depth or vibrancy of the hologram so far. Here is a very poor pic I shot the last time I had it out of the SB, the colors are much more vibrant in hand but because you have to rotate the coin to get the effect it's tough for me to photograph.

I got this one off a lingering dealer late on the last day of a show. I asked him how much for a generic $2.50 Indian. He gave me a price. I dug the money out of my pocket. He gave me a box of slabbed coins and told me to find one. I was slow and he grabbed the box from me. There was only one in the box anyway. I guess the green in my hand was talking to him. He threw it down on the table and took my money. I didn't really look at it and wondered why he was not happy about selling me the coin. When I got to the car I found out why. A good day at the coin show.

rrantique reacted to leeg in NGC graded coins ONLY in Registry Sets (US and World)
NGC offered both NGC and PCGS coins in their Registry for a long time. PCGS never has.
I thought it inevitable that NGC would eventually make this change.
My only set's are in the NGC Registry.

Early Commemoratives.
Each one has a separate story to tell.

My favorite is the $2.50 and $5 Indian gold quarter and half eagles. I love the incuse design (yes I know it's not technically incuse but it's commonly referred to as such), love the design history, and it just screams "gold treasure" to me. A kid I knew in elementary school inherited one and I thought it was the coolest treasure in the world. I completed the $2.50 set a few years ago (AU58-MS61) and it remains my favorite.

rrantique reacted to RWB in "Branch Mint Proof" Morgan dollars
Nice 1879-O and has details of a proof -- if so, it was made in Philadelphia. The Engraving Department made sample coins from new design dies, and with the New Orleans Mint ready to open it's possible one or more sample coins were struck as "best quality" examples to be shipped to the new mint.
Is the mintmark doubled?
