  1. Very nice finds! I really like the 97, from the pics it appears to be a sharp looking coin.
  2. $10 well spent in my opinion. Not only did you learn a valuable, yet cheap, lesson you also received a token/reminder to help you remember the lesson and its a good conversation piece. If it were mine I would put it in a capsule with a label saying "If it seems too good to be true it probably is" and I would call it my "Captain Morgan".
  3. I found two silver eagles my dad had, 91 & 97, that were in their mint boxes but the boxes were cut to fit the coins without a protective case (when did the mint ship eagles in boxes cut like that??). They were both obverse side up and both have a slightly dark toning with hints of color to them and one had some colored toning on the reverse. Ive read other accounts of eagles being placed in envelopes like yours were and toning very nicely.
  4. I ran across the first pic on ebay and immediately thought 'FAKE'. The reverse of that coin is covered completely in a golden tone. So ive seen the faked tone coin and browsed around a bit more and ran across an even more amazingly toned coin but this time the toning on the obverse was matched by what was on the reverse. Now the most amazing thing about the 2nd coin is that it comes slabbed in a PCGS case with a rating of MS6.
  5. LOL, I was on Ebay and I saw an auction for 3 wheat pennies, 1916 S, 1929 D and a 1932. What caught my eye was all 3 coins appeared to be a very pretty red color and all 3 coins were the same exact shade of red. There was only the obv. and rev. pictures and neither allowed magnification so you cant really look at the coins. So I looked at the sellers name and it was north-east-auction. I had just read your post yesterday so the name rang a bell immediately. Thanks for sharing the knowledge with those of us less experienced in this hobby. P.S. Im starting to think coin collecting and masturbation have alot in common. They should both be done alone, behind closed doors and with the understanding that those who dont share our particular interests dont wish to watch us engage in it.
  6. LOL, now I feel silly. I really should have caught that but I never put it under my scope. I looked at it under a 10x glass but with 25 years of welding behind me my eyesight up close is horrible. I missed that wearing 2.75 power reading glasses with the coin under my 10x glass. Its time to see the eye doctor I guess. Thank you VKurtB.
  7. I have the 2021 reverse proof eagle set of coins and I noticed the type 2 coin had a W mint mark on the obverse side and a S mint mark on the reverse side. I also have a 2021 MS 70 type 2 which also has the W mint mark on the obverse but it doesnt have the S on the reverse. So my question is why does the reverse proof have what looks like two different mint marks. When i go to the Mints page on that set of coins it says this about the "original design" coins; Each coin with the original designs bears the “W” mint mark reflecting it’s striking at the West Point Mint. (My reverse proof type 1 coin has no mint marks at all) The Mint page says this about the "new design"; Each coin with the new designs bears the “S” mint mark reflecting its striking at the San Francisco Mint. So did the mint screw up or what?
  8. Just to be on the safe side ill be sure to give it a second bath but you may be seeing a reflection. I reload ammo and I take the pictures on my reloading desk. Ive been using a green ammo can to lay my phone on to take the pictures and if you look the green can be seen at the bottom of the pictures. Where the ammo can is at. Ill be sure to use a black can in the future.
  9. Ok I hit the 1885 with acetone and since over half of the Morgans were kept in the same 2x2 plastic pocket page I guess I will have to do them also. All of them since I dont recall which ones came from it. I wore latex gloves when using the acetone and when I finished the glove where I held the coin at was light green, gloves were blue. Also the little bit of acetone left over was the same light green color but slightly darker. Anyway heres the coin again;
  10. 10-4 guys I will get on that ASAP. Thanks for the tip.
  11. Ive seen someone reference "dipping" coins several times but I have no idea what they are talking about. Dip them in what?
  12. Howdy folks!!! Here is my 1885 Morgan which is another of the ones my father had tucked away. I like this coin and I think it looks good. Theres a small area thats has some toning but its not alot. So tell me what grade yall think this coin would be and as ever thanks for your time. For two days every time I tried to log on the forum I couldnt due to my adblocker being flooded with over 500 ads a minute. Has anyone else ever had this problem?
  13. Thanks for explaining things for me and the links. So as I understand it the quarter I have was created using multiple die strikes, as all coins are and in between the die strikes the coin shifted causing the doubling effect. This is why you get the flat step like appearance, the die presses the first impression flat as it creates a secondary impression over the first. But a true double die is made when during the creation of the die the coin imprint is carved (for lack of a better word) in the face of the die using multiple passes and in between those passes for some reason the alignment changes slightly causing the imprint to be carved in the die twice, hence the term double die. So when they go to make coins the die itself is flawed and that die can never be used to make a perfect coin as it will always have a flawed imprint. This is why it doesnt have the flat stepped appearance. At least thats what ive gotten from it so far.
  14. Ive posted three pictures, the first is an obverse shot of my 1965 quarter and the second is a close up of the words "In God We Trust" from the same quarter. The third picture is a side by side comparison of the same close up shot from my quarter and the one shown in PCGS's price guide. So what do I have? I dont think its a DDO but what do I know. Anyways thanks for your time, Mike
  15. It always seems to happen like that dont it. I mean of course you had no hidden agenda when going to the orchard and it just made sense, seeing as you were so close, to just swing by and look at the ridiculously low priced MS 64 Morgan. Very nice find and im not the first bit jealous at all. These are the types of small places I love to take my business to.
  16. News Headline; Pigs fly, fat ladies are singing and Hell has frozen over!!
  17. You should see how hard it is to figure out if you have the small or large date on a 1970-S. I may post it and ask for help because I cant make up my mind.
  18. Yeah I wouldnt sell any of Dads coins, even the ones that are so worn they basically have no monetary value. I found a 2019 W American Memorial Park today. The W mint mark surprised me as I hadnt seen one before so I figured I would look it up and until then I didnt hadnt realized the West Point coins were so valuable
  19. Ok Im pretty positive about this coin. After going thru a ton of coins from my old change jar I have finally found a little nugget. The coins in pretty rough shape so its not worth much but I found it and thats all that matters!
  20. Thanks guys, when I was typing the message for this thread I had a completely different coin in mind, hence the scratch remark. So when I posted the thread and looked at the pictures I realized i had screwed up but I figured hey its up now so I may as well run with it. As for the grading of this coin yall are right of course. While Libertys hair is pretty nice it doesnt make up for all the imperfections in other spots and with the wear on the eagles chest standing out its not a MS coin. Its still a nice coin though and since I got it as part of my dads old stuff ill keep it.
