My son’s generation (center of baby boom 40 years later) could not give less of a 💩 about precious metals being in coins. Who says? He does. The fetish of gold and silver is dying as certainly as demographics roll over.

...do u find this to be true for both US collectors n foreign collectors or is it more one way than the other?....

I tend to take a bit of a different view than many here. I have several collections ranging from my PTSD cent collection to PF66 or higher nickels. I have a small cork board that I hang holed coins on. I have a large cent holed with a square nail to a Kennedy half and several foreign coins including an 80 Reis brazil of Pedro I counter stamped By Pedro II to 40 reis.

...holey cow batman there may be a market in cork board futures here...i jest, but do commend u for rescuing these orphans, i have some similar coins that i just cant submit to melting that i place in type set albums when they fit, an international smorgasbord if u will....

Weird, ain’t it? Statistically the best (not best certified) Coq Marianne are almost certainly in continental Europe, but you’ll never know which ones they are because the French grading scale is what it is. (MS65 is the same as MS70) The single point difference game is a game the French don’t play. Forgive me, but it sounds to me that the idea of having a best registry set in the United States of a French coin threatens to achieve maximum silliness. It’s pure artifice. It’s like having New York Concord grape wine growers grading Premier Cru Bordeaux.

..."artifice"...ur being too kind...since u have frequently traveled across the pond to purchase non-US coins for ur collections im sure u r well aware that many of the US dealers who specialize in foreign coins n especially foreign gold "bullion" issues relish the opportunity to feast upon buying high grade certifiable coins for certification there that can be sold here for massive premiums due to the registry set competition that doesnt exist overseas...on many occasions these dealers who i buy heavily from have offered me tubes of such coins (ms67-68) for modest premiums over melt simply because they didnt want to pay for certification...the premiums pay for their travel expenses...i in turn keep what i want n recover my expenses by reselling the certified surpluses, one can actually assemble top registry sets in these issues at the cost of melt over a period of a few years...a win-win if u will on the back of "artifice"....

FWIW:  If it helps matters any, I mailed "that" envelope to the founder of the firm on May 15, 2024.  Your guess is as good as mine as to when to expect a response, if any.

I also sent a text to the firm alerting them I desired the "coin" in question, had mailed them my "remittance" and would appreciate the courtesy of a hold on the product in question, if at all possible.  The e-mail, simply addressed to: whom it may concern, was dispatched the same day, 5/15.  They advise waiting up to 10 days for a reply.  I regret to inform you we are past that date.

For those keeping tabs on me, I will wait until the Fourth of July before conceding defeat.  The next day is my wife's and my wedding anniversary. Mail matters then, won't matter.

What if the "founder" is deceased. The greeting card envelope is marked: PERSONAL & CKNFIDENTIAL.  What if the coin's been sold.  I certainly don't want a check in €uros back.  What if, in the interim, one of my T[hree]MW 🐓  becomes available.  Yup, at least I will have a spot for it on my set registry.

What's the very worst that can happen?  TOTAL SILENCE?  Nope.  Loss of the merchandise between here and France. You know Murphy's Law:  If it can happen, it may very well happen.  :makepoint:   doh!

Agreed, if you invest in coins you just grab them.(thumbsu

What I am wondering is this:  if gold and silver rocket to new highs...say double or triple....will regular non-PM U.S. coins move up ?  Dragged up or lag big time ?

...yes both will go up but not proportionally...the recent jump in silver drove up the price on common circ morgans  by 20-25% the jump in gold affected common circ gold by a lesser %....which would be expected

Secretariat fan myself.  Since his owner went to bat for him on the 1973 Preakness, he has the record for all 3 Triple Crown times.  There was a glitch with the time at the '73 Preakness (hard to believe) and tapes of the run didn't match up with the time.

...fully aware of "big red"'s legacy, watched all 3 races...the real question is which "big red" would have won a head-to-head stakes race???...never know, but i can sell u a fractional share in both for a single saint....

I'm not asking either question....I just think gold goes higher over the next 5-10 years.....and since I like collecting coins, I get to "double-dip" by investing in something that goes up in price. (thumbsu

...gasoline keeps going up, but i dont double-dip n store it away...is it an "investment" as well?...u have stated gold is not an investment vehicle many times before n i agree but i keep buying it at all levels n do not sell, it serves a much different purpose, as long as u can carry it all n run fast....

Where are gold’s earnings? Better still, where are gold’s dividends? Odder still, where is gold’s preferential capital gains treatment? It doesn’t exist. Normal income marginal rate. Gold is a VASTLY underperforming asset, almost by act of LAW.

...accurate, but not the purpose for gold...the litmus test is..."at the end of the day, would u prefer a pocket full of gold or a basket full of greenbacks?"....

@World Colonial WAS INTUITIVELY CORRECT IN EVERYTHING HE HAS SAID TO DATE... and, to my personal knowledge, as regarding his comments published on this site, he has never boasted, bragged, belittled others, exaggerated, embellished, embroidered, or uttered any statements that cannot be substantiated.  His complete transparency allows viewers to assess the member, his areas of interest in coins and modest admissions in his disappointments as well as triumphs.  If you were to ask me something about this collector, a flood of information surfaces -- all of it not only plausible and credible -- but resounding with the ring of truth.

Ask your average member about the subject of this inquiry and, like a former president, you will be deluged with superlatives and goaded into providing more general information. Your response will most closely resemble the following emoji:  (shrug)

Re: GOLD:  sad to say but for those who are younger, your best strategy would be to wait and see. You can afford to take risks. Regular purchases at intervals to diversify your portfolio is a wise approach; otherwise Buy Low and Sell High.  Do not predicate any course of action you choose to engage in solely on the strength of the muted bark of a junkyard dog enamored of a hermit crab-like approach to fellow members conducted in absolute secrecy. To my knowledge, the Mukhabarat, if active, has no jurisdiction in the United States.

An NGC Conservation label for an MCMVII HR says "GENUINE" -- this means it was a Details coin, right ?  :taptaptap:

Has to be....coin went for $8,100 (w/bp) and it was Flat Rim.

...quite possibly, but basically it means the submitter requested the coin just be authenicated....fyi, i just returned from attending the PAN coin show, u will be happy to know that gold was doing quite well saints included...bullion was strong, and sources tell me that the costco nutter-butter machines r chugging rite along as well....

Maybe, but it can't be worse than those in the early-1970's who saw gold quadruple before they were legally allowed to buy it....then saw it quadruple again in 5+ years.

Folks who for decades knew it was worth $35/oz. suddenly had to pay $150 - $750 an ounce, with the metal pretty much averaging about $350 for the next 20 years.

...if all else fails, u still mite be able to be a fractional owner of Seize the Grey....

(I WOULD HAVE USED THE EXAMPLES OF THE ASSASINATIONS OF THE ARCHDUKE FRANZ FERDINAND AND SS-REICHSPROTEKTOR REINHARD HEYDRICH, BUT REALIZED YOU CANNOT SPELL THEIR NAMES MUCH LESS PRONOUNCE THEM CORRECTLY.
