In a sense of the word, yes I am a "judge". I am a certified numismatic exhibit judge for the ANA. U.S. Coins. And if you ever get over grossly overpaying for common proof sets, and build an exhibit for an ANA convention, you may take solace and confidence in the fact that I am not allowed to know whose exhibit is whose. [although many exhibitors have a "style" that often nearly reveals their identity]

And no, exhibiting is NOT like a Registry Set. But the two may be merging down the road if today's press release from NGC is what I think it might be.

Because yes, the only way anybody learns about coins is on a discussion board, right? [/rolls eyes] I guess it depends on how much one is disposed to trust the Internet for anything. Me? VERRRRRRY little.

I'm negative because asking the questions you do with the quality of the photos you present is a complete waste of everyone's time, mostly yours. And yes, when I started, I only had one serious collector mentor, because that's how the hobby worked then, individual to individual. I also had about 10 numismatic books before I began to collect generally. And about 40 before I began to collect seriously. That also used to be the way this hobby worked.

Today, my numismatic library weighs over a ton. I know, because I am in the process of moving it.

    Two possibilities exist:

    1) The material is very common, or
    2) He may be trying to lowball you (rip you off).

The more likely is #1, the more evil is #2. Only knowledge can tell the difference.

Just checking: Are we still allowed to say this in this hobby??? Sometimes it seems like toning is getting jammed down my throat, and I don't really care for it. "Eye Appeal"? To whom, exactly? Yecch!

I bought my ultra-high grade non-SMS quarter already NGC slabbed, and I got it for a song because only I, among the other bidders in the room, realized it was a business strike, and not a SMS coin, from the way it was described on the slab label. That's what I love about back-country Pennsylvania coin auctions. Lots of lazy bidders not thinking outside the box. Same with my PCGS MS66FS 1939 Reverse of '38 nickel. I "stole" that one too.

VKurtB got a reaction from Kirt in Unc details. Top pop? What does top pop mean?
I agree. They need to take it off the software for Details coins. I actually have 2 TopPop coins that are straight graded and they have no others at the same grade - yes, two TopPop NoEqual coins. Think that's impressive??? You shouldn't! They are coins almost no one else would submit for grading. I submitted them for a very specific non-economic reason and they just both happened to come back PF70. The highest previous were PF69. Whose are better? I cannot swear mine are. That's the way grading works sometimes. It doesn't always mean what you'd think it means. [They were U.K. coins and the 3rd party grading fetish has not yet gotten to the insane point it has here. There are probably thousands of P70's out there still raw.]

Just a quick guess off the top of my head - NO errors, none at all.

That's a wee bit harsh, IMO. 60 and 61 are now reserved for some truly hogged up coins that still qualify as Mint State. It wasn't that way 25 years ago.

No one can answer the "worth hanging onto" question. Everyone's opinion of where that line lies is different. Is it a "big score"? No.

    "Need help photo grading."

You, me, and literally every other person on the planet. Grading by photos is a "fool's errand". Pictures aren't good enough. The coin must be seen in the hand and tilted under a standardized light. Ever wonder why the companies don't offer opinions either online and won't offer grades at show? Lack of the right viewing conditions. That said, based on what I can see here, which is not enough, I'd be at maybe MS63, perhaps 64, depending on how bad those obverse dings look under a proper light. It could even go to 62, if they look worse under that light.

VKurtB got a reaction from Marquez-Collector in confused!?!?
People who don't know a lot about coins need to STOP THIS!!! The reality is that Chinese fakes have FLOODED the online market, and numbering them is impossible. There are literally thousands of fakes out there for every real one. Does that make this hobby fun? No it does not. But there is a big coin show opening in Orlando tomorrow, and the prevalence of Chinese fakes will be on EVRYONE'S lips, but not their display cases, because "real" dealers don't touch that junk. Is it "inconvenient", compared to buying online, to buy in person? Yes, it is. Suck it up and do it anyway.

None of that has any relevance to anything I wrote. Your item is not a coin, and is definitely not gold. Where you come from is irrelevant to that, so don't try playing that card. Your assertions would be incorrect coming from anyone.

Reading Gilbert's posts reminds me of a particularly bad -script from Star Trek: The Next Generation where the Enterprise encounters a race whose language is indecipherable even to their "universal translators". So Gil, baby, sweetie, put down the crack pipe and try again. In ordinary language this time.
