Whenever I see these terms thrown about, I am reminded that very few countries use “AU” in their grading systems at all. Most go straight from XF to Unc. Either a coin is “stempelglanz” or it isn’t, right? 

Owning metals in a true financial calamity is like taking several accordions with you to hunt deer. In both cases, you need weapons and ammunition much more.

I just like the coin, but while there is at least PL contrast, the fields are a little marked up to get a gaudy grade. I just like the look generally.

I have long held that the difference between a 69 and a 70 is too minuscule to be important, and is just as likely a momentary eyesight glitch as anything on the coin. I consider MY 69’s and 70’s to be identical. But then, I’m not flipping and selling, so my “business model” isn’t dependent on the grades.

It’s a shame. It was once a nicely struck 1966, before the evil happened to it. So many were mushy.

At the 2019 World’s Fair of Money I watched on dealer lay one end of a slab on the “runs along the floor” leg of a show floor chair and stomp on the slab with his shoe to crack a slab open to resubmit it. Not difficult apparently. And this is a dealer who paid 4 figures for his table rent.

One thing you need to understand is that for the majority of the years of third party grading, “70” was an idea only; there were no 70 grades in practice. Now we have people expecting 70’s. By the way, the highest actual real grade used to be 65.

I generally accuse “ats” with theft of a sort - the sort wherein what they charge for the quality of what they provide is “larcenous” and the ratio continues to degrade presently. I have never used them; only friends and associates have. I am unimpressed with what I’ve seen from them compared with our hosts. I’ve used, over 25+ years, in order, ANACS (small slab), ICG, and now exclusively NGC. I have no present plans to use anyone else for any coin.

Making a buck is SUPPOSED TO BE extremely difficult, but then you’re not in it for the money, right? But you know all the current prices. Yeah. Kids aren’t the target market for slabbed coins at all, nor should they be. My wife’s going in for lisfranc injury surgery tomorrow, and the first two surgeons we spoke to offered nothing other than “you need to be off this for 12 weeks after I’m done cutting”.
